Gail Simone demonstrates why she should be given whatever Spider-Man book she wants:
Seriously. I maintain that Spider-man has represented repressed homosexuality for a good many years. Which is one of the reasons I like him so much.
She elaborates:
I’m serious about this…have you ever noted how many of the stories are about how icky icky girls ruin Spidey’s playtime? And how many of the females are clearly drag queens?
Spidey’s gay, and MJ’s a beard.
Hey, Steve Wacker? If you ever do another Back In Wack Q&A, I’ve suddenly got some questions for you (Also worth reading in the same thread: Gail’s reasoning on why Wolverine is a virgin).

Hmm. That would run counter to Quesada’s whole “no gay lead characters” thing. On the other hand… Radioactive Spider-stuff could make for some interesting stories.

“That would run counter to Quesada’s whole “no gay lead characters” thing.”
That wasn’t his thing. That was a committee decision he didn’t agree with. He’s just the one who told the public about it, thus causing people to assign it to him. He’s one of the ones responsible for getting that rule struck down.

Also, there have actually been gay lead characters in Marvel books since then — Annihilation: Conquest: Quasar was all about Phyla-Vell and her girlfriend Moondragon saving the universe and being awesome together. They’re still featuring in the main Annihilation: Conquest mini, though they’re sharing the top slot with a bunch of other characters.

Anyway, Gail Simone is hilarious. That whole thread is very funny. I love the bit where she says she does have a Spidey story she’d like the write, but Marvel is probably a bit less likely to let her tell it after this thread.

Wow, now three other comic creators have joined in the fun. That thread is getting so insane that at one point Gail had to stop and confirm that she’s only kidding. Fun stuff.

The name of the demon that the Hood gets his powers from should totally be “Ga’yl S’ymone”.

To the poster who mentioned Annihilation: Conquest: Quasar. I’m curious about that book. Is it a complete story, or does it tie into a million other comics?

Tintin: I can’t speak for this mini-series in particular, the trend with the first Annihilation series was that each character’s four-issue prelude arc could be read alone but was informed by events in the prologue- so, so long as you had an understanding of the events of the Annihilation Prequel (ie, the galaxy is being invaded and stuff is Messed Up,) the individual character’s arc was largely self contained.
Hope that helped.
