Deodato: Don’t look at me, I love deadlines.

December 13th, 2007

Keeping with the new wave of Marvel creators playing the blame game, Mike Deodato wants you to know - He’s not to blame for the erratic schedule of Thunderbolts these days:

Not my fault, guys. I always meet my deadlines. I only got the script for the last two pages of issue 118 last Thursday afternoon. I finished the pages two days after that, on Saturday. On the bright side, while waiting for the scripts, I’ve been using my lazy time to work on projects like Wolverine annual (35 pages plus cover, already finished ) ; Moon Knight Special ( 35 pages. Six pages and the cover completed so far ); three pages for Amazing Spider-Man and covers for She-Hulk, Punisher, MCP, Shadow Hunter, Ghost Rider and so forth…:) I know the waiting sucks… I get upset myself… but I forget everything when I get new pages of script in my email… Warren is a fantastic writer!

    Ahhhh…

    The sweet smell of vindication.

Not exactly professional, but I’m not entirely surprised. Ellis is a genius, but is notorious for completely missing deadlines.

For instance, will we EVER see the rest of newuniversal?

  3. Dave Says:

Marvel annnounced that they were putting newuniversal on hiatus as soon as the sixth issue came out.

There’s no deadline for Ellis to miss, because there are no immediate plans to do another 6 issues right now. Marvel is taking the TV series mentality far enough that they’re only releasing one “season” every year or so.

  4. Warren Ellis Says:

I think that smell is one of Dan Coyle’s restraining orders smouldering, actually.

Sick relative + unusually full workload = something had to give, and it was TBOLTS that took the hit.

The new artist on NEWUNIVERSAL, by the way, got started a couple of weeks ago — we’ve been waiting for him to get free on another job. Three scripts in the can, I think.

I am, however, sometimes crap at deadlines. I have a lot of them. Sometimes they sneak in through the window, or bubble out of the plughole. I always liked Douglas Adams’ thoughts on deadlines: “I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.”

If it means random yet awesome Gage issues then I’m more than cool with it.

Scheduled fill-ins that flesh out the characters and the world are absolute the way to go with these situations.

I wish more editors would realize this.

  6. Kevin Johns Says:

This is why I gave up reading monthly floppies.
