I was vaguely aware of Under the Influence: A Tribute to Stan Lee, an upcoming exhibit at Gallery Nineteen Eighty Eight in Los Angeles. But when I saw this promotional image last night, I was blown away.
It’s, of course, Dr. Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum as interpreted by Daniel Danger, one of about 100 artists who pays homage to Lee in the Jan. 8-Feb. 1 exhibition. Limited-edition prints of the Danger piece will be available for purchase.

I looked at the exhibit site and see that nothing by Jack Kirby or Steve Ditko is listed. Without them Lee would not have had the influence he did in the 1960s and beyond. Seeing other artists rendering Lee’s co-creations is no different than picking up most any Marvel Comic today since most of what is in Marvel Comics today is based on the 1960s characters.

It’s a tribute to Stan Lee, where the participating artists pay homage to Stan. Seeing as the esteemed Kirby is dead it would kind of be hard for him to pay homage. I respect the fact that both Kirby and Ditko were not treated fairly or given their due to most anyone’s satisfaction, but it’s a stretch to make them as being a wronged party in this instance.
