A number of publishers have already attempted to adapt Shakespeare’s classic plays into a mangafied format (most notably Abrams), but that isn’t stopping Wiley from attempting their own versions, which will be out early 2008. Active Anime has some preview pages.

Is this the end of Manga Shakespeare?
….sorry.

in case anyone’s interested, here’s a few more prevews for the Hamlet: http://mentacle.rusticeye.com/PAGES/HAMLET_MANGA_PREVIEW.html
Note: This book and Macbeth are probably (at least) PG-13 for violence and gore.
Here are the other artists, who have more previews and other great stuff on their sites:
Heyeondo Park(Julius Ceasar) – http://hanaroda.livejournal.com/
Yali Lin (Romeo and Juliet)- http://yalilin.com/
Eve Grandt and Candice Chow (Macbeth)-

And of course Adam Sexton, who adapted the plays into comic scripts:

So there’s these Manga Shakespeare, the Selfmadehero Manga Shakespeare, the Classical Comics adaptations, Julius from Oni Press…oh, and that guy from Shropshire who was doing it years ago, before it was cool.
(and probably more besides)
Seems like an AWWWWFUL lot of overlap and redundant effort. I mean, it’s the same few plays, which doesn’t help.
I’m not denying the appeal, or the audience, or the potentially lucrative crossover potential, but aren’t there any other plays? Any other authors?

(Disclaimer: my biggest seller this year has been a zombie sequel to Romeo and Juliet. People still love The Bard, obviously. And Zombies.)
