It must be December, because publishers are rolling out the hardcovers and collectibles, just in time for the holidays.
Dark Horse brings tidings of comfort and joy, and a Jimbo doll — an anatomically correct one, at that! — and a couple of Elfquest busts. DC Comics delivers three New Frontier figures, Supergirl and Fables statues, and … an Amazons Attack hardcover. (Hey, it’s better than a lump of coal, right?) Marvel, meanwhile, breaks out hardcovers for The Ultimates 2, and posters for The Ultimates 3.
Add to that hardcovers for the second volume of Chris Ware’s Acme Novelty Notebook, The Art of P. Craig Russell, Black Hole, and Queen & Country, Vol. 8, and you have … well, a pretty decent shopping list.
But the big-ticket items aren’t the only things hitting shelves this week. Not by a longshot. To see what other titles Chris Mautner and I think are worth mentioning, just keep reading. As always, let us know your choices in the comments below.
Kevin’s pick of the week:
The Pirates of Coney Island #6 ( of 8 )
I did a cartoon-style double take when I saw this on the Diamond shipping list. After all, it’s been nearly nine months since the release of the previous issue. It’s my understanding the delay was so artist Vasilis Lolos could finish his highly entertaining graphic novel, The Last Call. If that’s the case, all is forgiven.
If you’ve forgotten what The Pirates of Coney Island is about — and, really, who could blame you? — it’s writer Rick Spears and Lolos’ eight-issue tale of a gang of teens who steal cars, hang out on the boardwalk and fight their arch-enemies, the all-girl Cherries. I wrote about Lolos’ stunning art and colors a year ago, but it’s worth repeating.
Chris’ pick of the week:
Acme Novelty Datebook, Vol. 2
Chris Ware’s comics are so precise and meticulously designed that his sketchbook work, which is so loose and organic, may at times seem to be coming from a different artist altogether. This volume, like the first Datebook before it, collects a number of Ware’s sketches and other miscellany from the past ten years. Expect lots of gorgeous drawings interspersed with ruminations on how much of a horrible, abysmal person he is. I can accept the latter as long as I get plenty of the former.
Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean Pin Gacha
Elfquest Bust: Leetah
Elfquest Bust: Skywise
Gremlin with Postage Stamp Statue
Hellboy Animated magnet: Lobster Johnson
Jimbo Limited Edition Vinyl Figure
The Umbrella Academy Crest Patch
Chris: Dark Horse obviously has a firm eye toward the holiday market by releasing all these gee-gaws and tchotchkes in one fell swoop. Of the lot, the Jimbo figure is the only one that would give me pause before moving over to the comics. But for whom, other than myself, would I buy it? Perhaps JK would like it.
The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service, Vol. 5
Kevin: I absolutely love this quirky, funny and sometimes disturbing series, but I just realized the fourth volume rests, only partly read, on my nightstand. I either need to stop buying so many books or start reading faster.
Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Ion #1
Kevin: This appears to involve Kyle Rayner going toe to toe with Sodam Yat for the mantle of Ion, which should send slashfic groups into fits of ecstasy. The forecast calls for plenty of butt shots and torn clothing.
Wonder Woman #15
Kevin: After the fumbled relaunch of this series, there must’ve been some temptation for Gail Simone and DC editorial to hit the reset button (again), and pretend most of the previous year never happened. But with her first issue, #14, Simone played the hand she was dealt: the “new” secret identity, the white jumpsuit, the Department of Metahuman Affairs, etc. Although I grew up watching the Lynda Carter TV series, I’m not a fan of Diana Prince (perhaps the only secret identity less convincing than Superman’s). However, Simone has made it work, and with the reintroduction of Captain Nazi seems to be giving a wink to the show’s first season, which was set during World War II. Okay, maybe I’m reading too much into that.
Wonder Woman: Amazons Attack hardcover
Kevin: Really? A hardcover? Huh.
Amazing Spider-Girl #15
Kevin: The little arachnid that could turns 10, sort of. This issue marks a decade since Spider-Girl appeared in What If #105.
Criminal, Vol. 2: Lawless
Chris: Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ noir series has steadily proven to be one of the best ongoing comics out today. Why Marvel hasn’t followed up on the goodwill and critical acclaim this series has generated and tried to produce similarly creator-driven titles from its talented stable is a mystery to me.
Mystic Arcana hardcover
Kevin: Here’s something for the serious fan of the magical corners of the Marvel Universe. This $25 hardcover collects the four-issue Mystic Arcana miniseries — Magik, Black Knight, Scarlet Witch and Sister Grimm — plus The Official Tarot of the Marvel Universe.
Ultimate Iron Man II #1 (of 4)
Kevin: Science fiction author Orson Scott Card returns, with artist Pasqual Ferry in tow, for another crack at Ultimate Tony Stark. (Wouldn’t this make the previous miniseries Penultimate Iron Man? Har.)
The Ultimates 2 hardcover
Kevin: Although I’m not sure something like Mystic Arcana cries out for the hardcover treatment, but the second volume of Millar and Hitch’s The Ultimates 2 certainly does. This 432-page (!) book collects the entire 13-issue series, available in the “Gods & Monsters” and “Grand-Theft America” trades, plus The Ultimates 2 #1 Variant Sketch Edition. At $34.99 it’s a little pricy, but it may be a good gift for that Millar/Hitch/Ultimates devotee.
Andromeda Stories, Vol. 2
Guin Saga Manga, Vol. 1: Seven Magi
Chris: The Guin Saga is a famous series of Japanese fantasy novels by one Kaoru Kurimoto about a leopard-headed warrior with an amnesia problem. This manga, by Kazuaki Yanagisawa, adapts part of that very lengthy saga. From Vertical, who is also publishing the English translations of Kurimoto’s novels, as well as the second volume of Keiko Takemiya’s Adromeda Stories, which is great if you liked To Terra (I did).
The Art of Bryan Talbot softcover
The Art of P. Craig Russell hardcover
Chris: Two art books examining the careers of two very different stylistically, but nonetheless very seasoned and well-established folks in the comics world. Of the two, I probably lean more towards the Talbot book, if for no other reason than Alice in Sunderland has still left reverberations pinging around in my brain. I imagine Russell’s book will delight and charm many a reader as well.
Black Hole collected hardcover (new printing)
Chris: A new printing of Charles Burns’ magnum opus. This is a seminal, gripping work, using a mutant teenage plauge to serve as a metaphor for issues of alienation, sexual insecurity and abandonment. Plus, it’s deliciously creepy. If you haven’t at least perused it at this point, you’re missing out.
Blake & Mortimer: The Mystery of the Great Pyramid, Vol. 1
Chris: The first Blake & Mortimer reprint for 9th Cinebook, The Yellow M, didn’t exactly bowl me over. It actually felt like lukewarm Tintin to me. Still, I know the series has a devoted following in Europe, so I’d at least thumb through this “new” book in the hopes that I might pick up on whatever I missed the first time around.
Dondi, Vol. 1
Chris: Irwin Hasen and Gus Edison’s long-running comic strip about the doleful little Korean orphan with the big, sad eyes gets the compilation treatment courtesy of Classics Comics Press, which is also releasing Leonard Starr’s On Stage (see below). I remember the New York Daily News carrying Dondi when I was young, but it was in the later, very weird era, when Dondi had lost his ethnic identity and was conversing with space aliens. This first volume collects the first 14 months of the strip. The second will be a “best of,” roughly covering 1958-1969.
The Engineer #1 (of 4)
Kevin: Friend and former collaborator Brian Churilla teams with Jeremy Shepherd on this pulpy, over-the-top miniseries from Archaia Studios Press about a man who uses a colossal pipe organ to cross dimensions in order to find the missing pieces of a machine that can manipulate reality. We posted a 10-page preview of the first issue back in September.
Hate Annual #7
Chris: Hey, new Buddy Bradley stories! We certainly could use more of those around here.
Laura Warholic: Or the Sexual Intellectual hardcover
Chris: Fantagraphics offers its first-ever, all-new, all-prose novel by one Alexander Theroux. You now know as much as I do about this book.
Leonard Starr’s Mary Perkins On Stage, Vols. 1-3
Chris: I’ve heard really good things about this soap opera comic strip from people whose opinions I respect. Enough good things to make me consider plunking a few dollars down to check out a volume. Perhaps this will be the week that happens. If I don’t buy that Dondi volume.
Naruto, Vols. 25-27
Chris: Naruto Nation comes to a close with the release of these three volumes, wrapping up what, according to my sources, is one of the less-noteworthy plotlines (which is likely one of the reasons why they sped releases along the way they did). From here, the story jumps several years to feature an older, but probably not very much wiser, Naruto.
Speed Racer, Vol. 1
Kevin: I’m not overly excited by the art for this Seven Seas book, the trailer for the movie has me itching for some Speed Racer.

I’m very tempted on that Ultimates 2 hardcover. (let’s see if Santa isn’t a douche this year.)

Hmm lets see.
Im looking to get Booster #5(is Batgirl REALLY coming back?), Countdown #20(its growing on me as the pace picks up), GL #25 & Tales of the Sinestro Corps:ION #1(AWESOME story arc continues!), Wonder Woman #15(GO GAIL!!), New Avengers #37 ( Who’s your skrully? LOL), Nova #9(the guys back better than ever!), and X-Factor #26(Mesiah Complex is hitting HIGH gear now!)

The Boys coming out is always a reason to celebrate. Scalped #12 should continue to deliver Jason Aaron goodness. I’m also looking forward to Suicide Squad #4; it’s good to see it back on the shelf after all these years. And New Warriors continues to shine among Marvel’s post-Civil War titles.

Almost all DC
my 52 spin offs:
Booster Gold #5
Black Adam #5
my Sinestro Corps War:
*GL #25
*GLC #19
*Tales of the SC: Ion #1 (but I’ll be sad that it’s not Tales of the SC: Anti-Monitor)
I’m still being suckered by Countdown (but not enough to buy Captain Carrot):
*Countdown #20
*Countdown: Arena #2 (the first one was better than you’d think)
*Search for Ray Palmer: Red Son #1
Other Stuff:
*I’ll peruse that Ant Man trade but probably not buy
*The Engineer looks sweet. I’ll pick that up if my store carries it.
*Probably Toyfare.

… an Amazons Attack hardcover. (Hey, it’s better than a lump of coal, right?)
The lump of coal will burn longer and keep you warmer. Advantage: coal.
