The Thomas Jane Punisher movie was okay and solid. Hopefully this new version will be better.

I really enjoyed Ray Stevenson in HBO’s Rome. I’ll admit, The Punisher has never done much for me as a character, but Thomas Jane’s performance made me more interested in him, and I believe Stevenson will do so as well.
Now that old one with ol’ Dolph … well, let’s not go there. Sorry, peeps. Don’t mean to hate on Drago.

Is it just me, or is anyone else getting a serious Steven Segal vibe here? I’m totally seeing a ponytail under his ear.

not a good shot to comment about, is it.
the best thing the punisher movie had going for it was tom jane. gonna miss him in this.

Sweet Stevin Seagal is the punisher. I can’t wait for this DTV movie.

The skull is waaaay too faint … and it practically becomes invisible because of the color of the background. But that’s a nitpicky point, I guess.
And I agree with Palmiotti — Thomas Jane’s skill and enthusiasm for the material is what made the first film so great. It’s a pity that the studio couldn’t get its act together and launch the project sooner.

I also got the Stevin Seagal vibe when I saw this picture. Looking at other pictures of the actor, I think it’s just a bad pic.

Titus Pullo as Frank Castle? Yes, please!

not to be trite, but…stevin seagal, anyone? anyone? i know i have at least two of you on it.
i enjoyed the first one, actually. so i have mixed feelings about this. however, i didn’t have a lot “invested” in the comic, so i’m no critic.

Looks ok so far. i hated the thomas jane(besides hes too short) version, since I didn’t like the source material. I was more a fan of the Chuck Dixon/Microchip era, which I think this version will use.
Its funny, I seem to remember in the late 80s or 90’s, Steven Segal was inline to play ole Frank

He should have stayed bald.

That dude looks like Steven Seagal.

I see myself just constantly be reminding how poor this casting is, appearance-wise, compared to when Thomas Jane played the role. Jane was excellent as Punisher. The villains and conflict were the disappointment.

Whoaa… Steven Seagal??
December 7th, 2007 at 4:39 am
Hopefully this version is better then the Thomas Jane version which was horrible and John Travolta just made it worse. Any idea of a rating at this point. You really can’t do a good Punisher movie with a PG-13 rating.

@spidertour2 - I don’t think the reason Thomas Jane dropped out was a timing thing; it was actually because he thought Lionsgate needed to do a harder, more violent flick while they didn’t agree: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/32673
That said, I hope this works out. But yep, very Steven Seagal. But the Punisher is Hard to Kill…
Thank you, thank you - I’ll be here all week.

The Punisher should be a big mo-fo like he’s drawn in the current MAX series.
Ray is that size, Jane was NOT.

Thomas Jane looked more like the Tim Bradstreet cover art, where Ray Stevenson looks more like the interior art. Still, I reserve judgment until we get a clearer picture of Frank. This looks like a frame from a longer sequence rather than a promotional still.

Ray Stevenson is a good actor and all, but the best part or the only good thing about the first Punisher movie was Thomas Jane. You knew he understood and had the character in his heart, even if the movie was lackluster in general because of the general creative direction.

I thought the last 20 minutes of Jane’s Punisher movie was almost perfect. It was pretty much everything I expected from the character. They just had to spend the first part of the movie turning him into that broken-but-powerful person.
Howard Saint: You killed my son!
[explosion in the distantce]
Punisher: Both of them.
That’s spot on perfect, to me.

To me while I like Thomas Jane you felt like it was “an actor playing Punisher” rather than the Punisher himself. When I saw the film I saw the story a cop seeing his family being gunned down and then taking revenge down the line. But I never thought for a minute that it was the Punisher. And to a certain extent too dyeing your head black and working your muscles doesn’t make you the Punisher too, as good and dedicated as TJ was. You have to hire a brute, somebody that is this mountain of a man that is Frank Castle with this darkness inside of him. TJ doesn’T have that darkness. You have to think of Harry Calaghan and how Eastwood embodied him. They didn’t hire Paul Newman and make him gain weight; they hired somebody that WAS that character. And the rest is history. We’ll see how the new one does.

When I was a kid, I used to watch Stephen Segal movies and just pretend it was a Punisher movie. Funny how things come full circle. Hopefully this movie will rock, but I’m not getting my hopes up.

Around every corner Marvel finds a way to Piss me off, Thomas Jane was good, the dude did a heck of a good job in the last punisher movie, other than scheduling, I strongly believe that Marvel should of brought him back, if the trailer doesnt look to good in saying scew Marvel. damn bastards.
December 18th, 2007 at 2:30 am
Thomas jane was perfect as the punisher this guy just doesnt do it, the reason the first punisher was semi good what cause of jane.
December 19th, 2007 at 7:32 pm
I did not want Tom Jane to be the Punisher. Then I watched him, he was too small for the part but did a great job. I would have no problem if he was in this movie, however I hated just about everything else about that movie. The whole thing would have been way better if the director did not have a big obssesion with old Clint Eastwood westerns. It had such potential until Hensliegh turned it into a spaghetti western tribute. Ray Stevenson looks like Frank Castle, I think he will be great. As far as the pale looking skull, the scene is in a reddish lighted room which is washing it out quite a bit. It may be worn out like the one TJ wore in the last one just the light making it look faint.

I agree that Jane did a good job with the first movie. There were a lot of parts that were off like casting a love interest, and if he would have gone with the girl that would’ve been the end of it for me, but I was looking for more firefights instead of assassinations like kills. The last 20 minutes rang true for the character from the battle sequences to the whole attitude of Jane. By the last 20 minutes he had officially become The Punisher. Whenever I think about The Punisher though, I see an older guy. Jane was a little young but that’s how it was supposed to be. The first movie was going to be about him starting out. The second one should show a progression of at least five years I think. People should know who is is by now, I mean I want to see guys drop thier guns running away yelling “It’s The Punisher!!!” like he’s got a rep now. I do like the look of Ray, he looks everything like I think the punisher should look like in that he’s big, not as young looking as Jane, and he has the slicked back hair as the comics did. I hope he actually gets to use his M203 grenade launcher this time on the M4 instead of it getting shot. This movie should also be an R rated one because The Punisher is not nice, and will not preserve your body for your funeral. There should be dismemberment and a hail of gunshots and knife action, plus anything he can improvise. As on the videogame too, I’d like to see a violent interrogation sequence or two.
