From the Mothership’s Talk@ boards:
Today, “The Flying Friar” graphic novel ships in the USA. Low orders, less than 1 in 10 comic shops will stock it. Probably less than 1 in 20. And then only a couple of issues. MidTown Comics is a glorious exception.
So. Go into a comic shop and note its absence. Then complain to the high hills that they haven’t got a copy. Go here if you need some ammunition. If you fancy asking the retailer to order a copy for you, please do. It’s from Markosia. You may need order code: AUG073845. But either way, make some noise about it.
Then tell me the response you get. If you do choose to order a copy, tell me how long, or if at all, it takes to arrive.
The results of this experiment will form a Lying In the Gutters vodcast in the future. It may well change the comics industry. For the better as well, which is nice.
Is that the experiment that will change the comics industry? Or the vodcast in general? And is it changing the industry in the sense of any random crossover from the ’90s changing the world of comics forever, or is something actually going to change?
You, as they say, decide…

I thought the best part of the column was to tell everyone to forget that whole batman thing he reported about.

Independent comics can only begin to succeed if the creators look beyond the comics industry. They need strategy, not a rallying cry. The scene is too crowded as it is.

New Comics come out tomorrow, at least here in NYC.

“New Comics come out tomorrow, at least here in NYC.”
That’s odd. Why are the new comics coming out on Thursday this week? Glad I didn’t run by the ol’ LCS at lunch.
Oh, and I would guess Rich is just trying to prove a point that we already know: that the direct market sucks for the little guys. What I want to know is why I can’t find The Flying Friar on Amazon? I know Markosia has listed on there before. Why isn’t that on there?

God, Rich’ll do anything to hype his mediocre product. Part of me thinks “fair enough”, the other thinks, “Jesus, flog a dead horse much?”

Yeah, time to give it up, Rich. That parrot’s dead.

Hmmm…damned if you do, damned if you don’t, eh? I mean, if the creators don’t pimp their own wares these days, they’re out of luck, because no one else is going to do it for them. Unless your name carries a lot of clout in the industry already like a Jim Lee or Alan Moore. Hell, even guys like Mark Millar and Warren Ellis get out there and spread the word (or have a legion that spreads it for them).

Markosia are approaching the book market through a Christian book publisher who is interested in pushing the Flying Friar into all sorts of places. That’ll be when it gets an Amazon listing I believe.
And what I’m doing is anything I can to persuade someone to have a look at the comic when they see it on the shelf. That’s all.

Looks like Rich is changing the comics industry already.
