Justin Chatwin to star in live-action Dragonball

Details about the live-action Dragonball movie have been few and far between. We’ve known that the Fox feature has a $100 million budget, and that it’s filming in Montreal, but that’s about it — until today.

Variety reports that Justin Chatwin (War of the Worlds, Traffic) will star as Goku, the powerful protagonist of Akira Toriyama’s insanely successful manga-turned-anime franchise. James Marsters (Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) has been cast as the villain Piccolo.

James Wong (Final Destination, The One) will direct from a script he wrote. Wong is probably best known as a writer-producer for the TV series The X-Files, Millennium and the short-lived Space: Above and Beyond.

Shooting will begin later this month, with Dragonball set to premiere on Aug. 15, 2008.

  5. Ian Astheimer Says:

Looks like Chatwin’s got the hair for it.

I’m a little surprised the headline wasn’t “Spike to Play Piccolo,” though. Irresistible pun aside, Marsters is surely a bigger name in this community than Chatwin.

leave it to Hollywood to murder Asian media entertainment. When’ll they ever learn.

  9. AltredEgo Says:

I just don’t see how you can do a DBZ movie with a non-asian star. He’s called GOKU! I also don’t see how you could do the character with a non-martial artist.

I guess they figure CG-mocap will save the day. I mean it worked wonders for Matrix Revolutions…oh wait…

    What? Hmm..interesting!

  11. TRAVIS Says:

LOOK AT THAT PICTURE OF JUSTIN…LOOK LONG AND HARD.HE LOOKS LIKE THE CLOSEST CHARACTERIZATION TO GOKU THAN ANYONE RIGHT NOW.DYE HIS HAIR JET BLACK,DARKEN HIS PUPILS WITH CONTACT LENS,AND SPIKE HIS HAIR TO LOOK LIKE GOKU’S.HAVE FAITH IN THIS MOVIE!! SPECIAL EFFECTS,CREATURE AND CHARACTER DESIGNS WILL MAKE THIS WORTHWILE WATCHING. ALSO,REMEMBER THAT THIS IS BASED ON THE ORIGINAL DRAGONBALL NOT THE “Z” SERIES.SO IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO START OFF WITH GOKU’S ORIGINS(AS CHATWIN IS GOKU AT 18 YEARS OLD) AND DEMON KING PICCOLO’S REINCARNATION FROM EVIL TO THE GOOD NAMEKIAN BODY HE OWNS IN THE DRAGONBALL Z SERIES(IF THEY WOULD KILL HIM OFF IN THIS ONE).THAT WOULD MAKE ROOM FOR SEQUELS FOR YOU GUYS THAT DON’T KNOW DRAGONBALL HISTORY.NUFF SAID.
