Can’t Wait for Wednesday

Can't Wait For Wednesday!

If I were a betting man, I’d have said New Comics Day would be a day later because of Monday’s federal holiday in the United States. But here we are on Tuesday, and it’s business as usual.

It’s a good thing, too, because I’m not sure the collective comics fandom could’ve waited an extra day to get its hands on The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Black Dossier, the fourth volume of Scott Pilgrim, Gail Simone’s debut on Wonder Woman, the conclusion of World War Hulk, and the 27-volume Naruto collector’s set. (And before anyone says anything, yes, I realize that most readers in the U.K. will be waiting a long, long time to read The Black Dossier.)

Yeah, it’s a pretty big week.

To see what other titles Chris Mautner and I think are worth mentioning, just keep reading. As always, let us know your choices in the comments below.

Chris’ pick of the week: The League

of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Black Dossier

LOEG: The Black Dossier

Any new Alan Moore book is cause for celebration in my neck of the woods, doubly so when it’s a book that’s been promised and expected since … well, is this an odd or even year?

No matter, a new League book is out and all is right with the world. I received a review copy on Friday and have been slowly plowing through the book. The plot concerns Mina and Alan, now young again and in Britain circa 1958, seeking the Black Dossier of the title that will reveal the history of their government-sanctioned group.

The book really seems to be an excuse for Moore and O’Neil to play “spot the reference” as they mimic Shakespeare, Fanny Hill, Beano, and a Tijuana Bible (oh, and let’s not forget the 3-D section in the back of the book — glasses included). The result is something veddy British and very text-heavy; more than some fans might be expecting. Still, you can’t really go wrong with a book that sets James Bond up as the main villain, can you?

Kevin’s picks of the week: Zombies Calling

and Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together

I think this is only the second time I’ve “cheated” and named two picks of the week, but I figure both of these titles deserve special recognition.

Zombies Calling

The first, the much-anticipated fourth volume of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s manga/video game/indie rock-inspired Scott Pilgrim series, already is being praised online, so I don’t know that I can add anything — particularly since I haven’t read it yet. From what I’ve seen, though, O’Malley’s art, already charming and expressive, has taken a big leap forward with Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together.

The second book, Faith Erin Hicks’ Zombies Calling, isn’t nearly as high-profile. Although this is her first graphic novel, Hicks has had a longtime Internet presence with the webcomic Demonology 101. Zombies Calling, from SLG Publishing, began as Hicks’ joke about action-movie cliches, but has developed into an energetic and wry action comic about a geeky heroine and her roommates battling zombies armed with little more than their knowledge of horror movies.

And just to tie everything together, O’Malley endorses Hicks’ graphic novel, too: “If you like Scott Pilgrim, you’d probably enjoy her book about ordinary students battling a zombie invasion.”

You can read a 15-page preview of Zombies Calling here.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Panel to Panel

Kevin: For the Buffy completist, Panel to Panel is a 192-page companion book that showcases art from nearly a decade of comics. This includes previously published slayer art from the likes of Chris Bachalo, Mike Mignola, Eric Powell and Ryan Sook.

All-Star Superman #9

All-Star Superman #9

Kevin: I’ve yet to be disappointed by an issue of Morrison and Quitely’s All-Star Superman. However, looking at the DC Comics website, I note two things: 1. The solicitation text is getting increasingly vague (”Perils loom as Superman faces the strangest of adversaries,” “Nothing can stand against the Man of Steel!”); and 2. the next issue doesn’t come out until February. Ach.

Batman and The Outsiders #1

Kevin: After a last-minute change in creative teams — Chuck Dixon and Julian Lopez replaced Tony Bedard and Koi Turnbull — and, apparently, character lineup, the retooled, relaunched series returns to its 1980s roots: Batman, still frustrated by the Justice League’s high-profile, reactive approach to superheroics, reassembles a team to take the fight to the bad guys. The “proactive” group can be a tough concept to maintain — the comic landscape is littered with the corpses of strike forces, task forces, and other covert teams — but if anyone can pull it off, it’s probably Dixon.

DMZ #25

DMZ #25

Kevin: Danijel Zezelj (Loveless, Desolation Jones) illustrates this stand-alone story about Wilson, the Chinatown mafia leader. Writer Brian Wood teased us with a preview of Zezelj’s art last week. Beautiful stuff.

Salvation Run #1 (of 7)

Kevin: Once you get past the Secret Wars setup, there’s a certain fun to looking at the “roll call” images of supervillains you’ve never heard of and wagering which ones will be used as cannon fodder. Joker, Cheetah, Killer Croc, Captain Cold, Killer Frost — you’re all safe. But Tapeworm, Girder, Sonar and Rock? Your issues are numbered.

Wonder Woman #14

Wonder Woman #14

Kevin: Fans rejoice as writer Gail Simone joins artists Terry and Rachel Dodson to get the relaunched Wonder Woman back on track. Simone starts things on the right foot as she pits Diana against angry, misguided denizens of Gorilla City. Not to give anything away, but after reading the post-battle gorilla scene, I hope they stick around for a while. Hilarious.

World of Warcraft #1

Chris: The game that’s doomed a thousand marriages comes to Wildstorm, courtesy of writer Walter Simonson and artists Ludo Lullabi and Sandra Hope. Might be worth a look-through.

Captain Marvel #1 (of 5)

Kevin: I’ve never had an interest in Captain Marvel, so the character’s return this year in a Civil War tie-in didn’t mean much to me. It seemed to irk more than a few fans, though.

Iron Man and Power Pack #1

Iron Man and Power Pack #1 (of 4)

Kevin: Marc Sumerak’s Power Pack miniseries are always a treat, but seeing the Power siblings teamed with Iron Man — particularly in light of he recent portrayal(s) in the “regular” Marvel universe — should make this enjoyable on a whole other level.

The Ultimates Saga #1

Kevin: I can’t make heads or tails out of this one. It’s apparently a recap of the first two volumes of The Ultimates, as told by Tony Stark, in preparation for Jeph Loeb and Joe Madureira’s run. It’s probably a good idea, considering that Madureira’s name is likely to draw a fanbase that might not otherwise be familiar with the series. But I can’t help but think of all of those flashback episodes of The Golden Girls, where they gather around the kitchen table, eating dessert and recounting something, through recycled footage, that happened in the previous season. While this issue doesn’t feature Bea Arthur, it does include an extra four pages by C.B. Cebulski and Travis Charest.

World War Hulk #5

World War Hulk #5 (of 5)

Chris: What a complete surprise and utter delight this series has been. Mind you, I haven’t been following the various tie-in books, but World War Hulk has been one of those rare occasions where the hype is well-deserved. A consistently smart superhero book that knows not to take itself too seriously or bring its political metaphors to the foreground. Very nice job, Mr. Pak and Mr. Romita.

Asian Beat, Vol. 1

Kevin: I’ve only skimmed through the first volume of this series, by Hakase Mizuki, but I appreciate that her art is less … abstract than in Demon Flowers. Still, the inhumanly tall characters with giraffe necks are really, really distracting. There are instances where the necks are, inexplicably, the focus on the panel. I don’t know, maybe I’m missing something.

Courtney Crumrin and the Fire Thief’s Tale

The Fire Thief's Tale

Kevin: Most any other week — one without a new volume of Scott Pilgrim, or the debut of Zombies Calling — this would’ve been my “pick.” After all, it’s been three years (!) since we last saw our young heroine, Courtney Crumrin. When we left her, back in 2004, Uncle Aloysius had just invited her to travel with him to Europe for the summer. In the 56-page Fire Thief’s Tale, Courtney encounters nomadic gypsies “with a dark secret” in Romania, and must save a young woman from losing her heart (and more) to a handsome violinist. Ah, Courtney, it’s good to have you back.

Meat Cake #16

Chris: The ever-iconoclastic Dame Darcy profiles Rudolph Valentino and the “secret language of flowers” in the latest issue of her ongoing Fantagraphics series.

Naruto Shadow Box Set

Kevin: I’ve been thinking about this ultimate Naruto collection since Matt Blind and John Jakala blogged about it a week or so ago. It’s all 27 volumes (so far) of the hit series, plus bonus features — and it comes with its own bookcase! If I had an extra $190 lying around, this would be mine. But I don’t. Oh, well, I don’t know where I’d put it, anyway.

Palestine

Palestine hardcover

Chris: One of the most seminal comics series of the past ten years finally gets its due in a loving, fancy-shmancy hardcover edition (the first ever believe it or not). Even if you already own Joe Sacco’s “groundbreaking work of comics journalism” (as the back cover blurb says) in one form or another you’ll want this new collection, as it contains a wealth of supplementary material, including Sacco’s original notes and photos, early drafts, revised pages and a new essay by the author reflecting on the work. This was one of the books of the 90s that made people outside the comics world sit up and take notice and it’s nice to see it finally getting the treatment it deserves.

Remembrance of Things Past, Part 3: Love of Swann, Vol. 1

Chris: It’s called Swann in Love, people! Swann in Love! C’mon, do I have to do all the heavy lifting around here?
Love of Swann. Good grief.

Shooting War

Shooting War graphic novel

Chris: Dan Goldman and Anthony Lappe’s webcomic about a blogger whose newfound fame earns him the chance to cover the Iraq War gets the full-fledged book treatment with this release. To be perfectly honest, I didn’t much care for the book. As commentaries on the war go, I thought this didn’t say anything I didn’t already know or suspect, and I found the attempts at satire to be clumsy at best. It’s no Special Forces, but if you’re hungry for something, anything to beat over the head of neocons, here’s your book.

  1. Joe Lawler Says:

A new Ex Machina trade, Scott Pilgrim and LOEG make this one of my most anticipated weeks in a long time. All Star Superman doesn’t hurt either.

I just need to hurry up and reread League vol. 2 in the absolute edition I just received.

  2. Jaime Says:

WWH, AS Supes, New Avengers, DMZ, Batman & Co., Wolverine, 100 Bullets.

    This week = WIN

  3. SONICMAN2 Says:

Good week compared to the last couple we’re had.

Looking forward to getting AS Supes, Xfactor, Nova, Thor, WWH, TT East, and Bat&Out.

Probably pick up Capt Marvel series. Not been a big fan, but interested to see what they have planned out now that CW is over.

  4. Nick Says:

It’s really called “Un Amour de Swann”. Either translation works.
