ComiPress translates an article that looks at the “make-believe science” of Eiichiro Oda’s wildly popular manga series, One Piece:
“The world of manga is such that even superhuman feats can be satisfactorily explained with a simple, ‘Ah. I can use this power because I ate XX fruit’; stories where explanations like the aforementioned cause everything to make sense are science fiction, but when it comes to flesh-and-blood humans, of course, things are a bit different.”

I think Oda uses the Devil fruit mechanic so as not to over complicate character powers and te origins thereof. He wants to keep it simple and fun, I guess, and Devilf Fruits are an easy excuse to introduce more wacky powers.
