The good folks over at TV Guide sent us some goodies this morning … as I mentioned last week, the Nov. 8 issue of the magazine will feature four Heroes covers by four comics artists. Each cover will spotlight a different question that will be answered in the November episodes of Heroes.
Jim Lee draws Hiro, Ando and Kensei:
Phil Jimenez draws Niki, Nathan, Matt and Mohinder:
Michael Turner draws Claire, Elle, Peter and “H.R.G.” — Horned Rim Glasses:
And Tim Sale draws Sylar, Maya, Monica and Micah:
The last goodie we received was a video of Tim Sale, talking about the cover and his work for the show:
The issue goes on sale this Thursday.

That is the best work I have ever seen out of Michael Turner. There isn’t a single bland face or distorted body part in the bunch.
November 6th, 2007 at 2:00 pm
Will those covers be available in Canada?
November 6th, 2007 at 2:07 pm
Nevermind… I believe they stopped producing TV Guides in Canada.
November 6th, 2007 at 2:10 pm
“H.R.G.” has an actual name — Noah Bennet.
And yes, that IS the best work ever from Michael Turner. He should draw for TV or movie properties more often.
November 6th, 2007 at 2:15 pm
Wow, that video won’t play for more than 3 seconds without pausing 10 seconds for buffering. I haven’t had this much trouble with a streaming video in years.
November 6th, 2007 at 2:19 pm
That really is much better work than we normally see from Turner? Is it the inker? Or does TV Guide’s cover editor hold him to a stricter standard than most comic editors? (Of course, TVG and most comics go to markedly different audiences, so that’s a factor.)
November 6th, 2007 at 2:20 pm
wow! that Turner cover is the best thing hes ever done
November 6th, 2007 at 2:38 pm
The Turner cover is amazing, as is the cover from Phil Jimenez. I think it’s the inker on Turner’s work that makes the difference. Not a fan of Tim Sale’s work, to me all his art is very bland.
November 6th, 2007 at 2:38 pm
Very cool covers!
November 6th, 2007 at 2:53 pm
I have to agree. I almost didn’t think that was Turner. That is a good job by him.
November 6th, 2007 at 2:58 pm
Yes, I recall a recent Canadian TV Guide saying “Last Issue” or “Final Issue” on the cover.
As more and more people have Internet access there’s less of a need to buy TV schedules. I use Zap2it’s site if I want TV listings for the next two weeks (the site memorizes TV service providers so you don’t need to keep typing your postal or zip code). And there’s still other print TV schedules for those few who still need them.
November 6th, 2007 at 3:01 pm
Wow, Turner’s awesome colorist is his saving grace. Noah looks like he’s 9ft. tall. Eck!
Love Tim Sale’s cover. At first glance I thought Jim’s cover was Leinil Yu.
November 6th, 2007 at 3:20 pm
Turner’s cover is a HUGE improvement over his recent comic cover work. I think my fave here goes to Phil Jimenez, he has the likeness down pat.
November 6th, 2007 at 3:35 pm
Phil Jimenez really wins this round, though I also can’t help but love the Tim Sale one. I think they all suffer from overly complicated coloring, especially Jim Lee’s. That’s not a bad drawing underneath all that crap.
Also, it’s worth noting that nobody really tried for action poses here. I’m pretty surprised. These three guys can draw some serious action shots, but these are pretty bland. Maybe that’s what they were told to do, but it was definitely a bad call whoever made it.
The Michael Turner pic looks ridiculous, of course, and will likely sell the most copies.
November 6th, 2007 at 3:46 pm
Jimenez and Turner win. I’d have said Jim Lee would have curbstomped the other covers, but this time his rendition doesn’t work too well. Maybe it’s too mach line art on the faces…
Why is Claire so pissed?
November 6th, 2007 at 3:54 pm
wow they’re all brilliant covers… too bad I’m in the UK
November 6th, 2007 at 4:10 pm
Really? you like Turner’s…? I mean, it’s better than his average, but it still isn’t great.
Jiminez’s is great, easily the best of the group. Great likeness while at the same time keeping his style in tact. Too bad Niki’s the focal point.
November 6th, 2007 at 4:10 pm
I like that Jim Lee cover & Phil Jimenezs cover looks great as well. Michael Turner gets it right with the cheerleader but everything in the background looks like ass since all the characters are out of proportion and the pants and arms consist of long cylinders. Seriously, this is a hot artist?-Heh. Tim Sales work has never been my cup of tea, infact its quite apparent here why that is but for those who cannot figure it out, everything he draws is just damn ugly and lazy.
November 6th, 2007 at 4:31 pm
Wow, that is the best Turner work I think I’ve ever seen.
November 6th, 2007 at 4:37 pm
Great stuff - too bad this season’s best character is Claire’s Nissan Rogue, which has interacted with more Heroes than anyone with actual powers.
Liefeld Rogue variant, maybe?
November 6th, 2007 at 5:07 pm
I prefer Sale’s, of the bunch of them (although Jiminez is knockout stuff, too). I like my comic adaptation art more expressionist than representational — the artist on a regular book that I thought did that best was Charlie Adlard on X-Files. That was great, underappreciated, work.
November 6th, 2007 at 5:18 pm
I guess I’m in the minority that I think they all look awful.
November 6th, 2007 at 5:44 pm
I don’t like them either. I’d rather see Jim Lee working on Wildcats, seeing that #2 has yet to released.
November 6th, 2007 at 6:26 pm
Michael Turner should use models as references all of the time. It’s amazing how much better his art looks without the overstrethed torsos.
November 6th, 2007 at 6:42 pm
I just got say those covers BLOW! I expect crap from Turner and Lee. All their stuff looks the same. Heck, Turner has always tried to be Lee anyway. I expected better from Sale though. I have dug his stuff since the Grendel days. I am erasing this cover from my mind. Where’s the Hatian to wipe that part of my memory?
November 6th, 2007 at 7:36 pm
I’m not a fan of Turner or Jiminez, but I think they both turned in better work than I would have expected (although I would think TV Guide would be a little askance at publishing a cover featuring a woman with gobs of blood dripping from her hands, even if it is a cartoon). The Sale and Turner covers look like they hacked them out in a few minutes and left the heavy lifting to the colorist.
November 6th, 2007 at 7:39 pm
I didn’t know Lindsay Lohan played the cheerleader.
November 6th, 2007 at 7:49 pm
The Canadian TV Guide, which was shut down last year, was published by a different company than the U.S. TV Guide magazine.
November 6th, 2007 at 7:53 pm
I got the Turner one, it is pretty cool looking in person too.
November 6th, 2007 at 8:22 pm
In Tim Sales’ picture the woman on the left has a protruding forehead.
November 6th, 2007 at 9:24 pm
Michael Turner and Jim Lee covers look nice.
November 6th, 2007 at 9:28 pm
HRG stopped being an acceptable nickname as soon as the characters started using it. C’mon. What sixteen year-old boy would say ‘The man with the horn-rimmed glasses’? Sixteen year-olds don’t know what those are unless they read comics.
November 6th, 2007 at 9:50 pm
“C’mon. What sixteen year-old boy would say ‘The man with the horn-rimmed glasses’”
A sixteen year old who didn’t know how else to describe the guy. If he knows what horn rimmed glasses are (and some people do) then it’s a reasonable way to describe him since that’s the character’s most distinguishing feature.
November 6th, 2007 at 10:00 pm
TV Guide often offers sets of their multiple cover issues for sale online on their website–those who are asking if they can buy them from overseas should check it out that way. One of the nice things is that TVG is now magazine-sized (roughly 8 x 11)–it’s no longer digest sized.
November 7th, 2007 at 3:33 am
Weird one-handed kenjutsu.
November 7th, 2007 at 3:57 am
Man, I was pumped for these, but was very much dissapointed. Didn’t really expect much from Turner, but the rest of the guys?? I don’t know, they all seem pretty flat and boring.
November 7th, 2007 at 9:28 am
Sale and Jimenez rock. The other two are “eh”. While I agree it’s Turner’s best, it still does nothing for me. That Jimenez cover though is awesomeness.
November 7th, 2007 at 10:06 pm
Phil IS the MAN!
PJ easily has the best cover, hands down.
I do have to ask: why does the Asian artist get the Asian actors? and why was Kaito not included? Lee’s is the only one with three, not four, characters. Kaito or Yaeko should have been included on that one.
btw, I can think of at least two story clues given away by these covers.
November 8th, 2007 at 12:50 pm
wow. im sorry, im new to this whole comic book thing. i got here because i love heroes and clicked on a link to see this, and i honestly think all the covers are great. but i think i am more surprised by peoples comments. me, i dont really read comics, but have, because of heroes, and i am ecstatic that a magazine as mainstream as tv - freaking - guide is promoting all of these wonderful artists. i honestly see nothing wrong with any of them and am actually a little ashamed to be so into comics and all i see are people trashing all of it.
on another note, i heard that michael turner has cancer, and hes been doing comic covers like crazy, and he still got to do this for us and for tv guide!anyway, i hope nobody thinks im being insulting or anything, its just that i love heroes, i love comics, and i think its great that all of these artists are getting more attention, because they deserve it.
November 8th, 2007 at 6:01 pm
I thinka all the covers are wonderful. Some of the comments here are analretentive and silly.ALSO THE Smack of jealously. thier all great artists who do great work.M,turner is fithging cancer and still trys his best. people online can be so ansty when the dont have the f..ing balls to say that to someones face. As a follow artist who is trying to get work.I wish them the best. the exposure is tremdous.
November 11th, 2007 at 1:11 pm
They’re all ..meh.
Why does everyone Tim sale draws look like chihuahuas?
