Not for the first time, the Spider-Man boards think they know how One More Day ends:
“Here is the low down. It’s pretty much what we all suspected. The marriage will be erased from history due to a deal that is offered to Peter. He has to undone some points in history that led to the unmasking in order to save Aunt May. While he is pondering the ethics of the choice made to him, MJ secretly makes the deal for him. Because she was instrumental in his choice to unmask, she chooses to go back and never reveal she knew he was Spider-Man. This undoes the marriage. As a ‘gift’ due to her bold choice, she is granted powers and becomes Jackpot. She is warned that if she reveals the past to Peter, who has no memory of it, then it will create a timeline shockwave. As a result, Peter is back to status quo, single and with a secret identity. Aunt May doesn’t know who is either. Sorry marriage fans.”
Others, however, aren’t so convinced:
“I have seen the spider-man bible sent to retailers and I know people at Marvel. This ‘information’ is inaccurate.”
“No sources … and it’s maybe the first time you’re posting on here. Can we have a bit of explanation?”
“Assuming that any of what you said is the truth (though I suspect the end result will be the same) - and I suspect that it may not be since you never revealed who performs this time wipe… Maybe he can go back to college. Maybe the house never burned down and May can live there again. Maybe Nathan never died and he can live there with her and tell Pete how irresponsible he is. Maybe Pete can keep blowing his dates with women because he needs to go save the day. Maybe Pete can live in a crap apartment with a skylight and Mrs Muggins can be the landlord. Maybe he can be back at the Bugle. Been there. Loved it then. Loved it so much, I can go upstairs and read it right now. In fact, why should I spend 9 bucks a month anymore since any progress the character makes is doomed to editorial nullification? Nothing is sacred at Marvel in the 21st century….but what Joe forgets is that we fans can go backward in time too.”
Was that the real end to One More Day? Give it a couple of months… or maybe a little longer… and we’ll find out.

Weirdly enough, I would be sort of ok with that.
Because it shifts the dynamic so that MJ becomes the one who has a secret which she can’t share with the person she loves.
And that’s a lot fresher than just rehasing Peter’s problems making it to a date for a new generation… again.

Strangely I’m okay with this too. I HATED the idea that Peter would choose his aunt over Mary Jane, but the idea that MJ does this out of love for Peter is actually a pretty good solution.

Guess it’s just me then to say NO THANKS!!! I think this is a stupid round-the-houses attempt by Marvel to try and “suprise” everyone. How about giving MJ a life instead of powers, how about giving Peter a new job (and ergo new supporting cast) instead of trying to wallow in nostalgia? How about killing Aunt May and letting the poor old bitch REST? Seriously? How about sending Peter back to the lab to develop some new weapons? Anything except this in-story retcon gimmickry?
Hope this is just disinformation.

I think if this is true, the awfulness of it will hang over the “Brand New Day” writers like a sword of damocles. So much so that they’ll resort to “fixing” it outside of 18 months.

And of course, resetting all this stuff so far back means Ben Reilly is still around.

I think it’s the best way to do a bad thing.

Wow. As a long time Spidey fan who grew up with a married Peter, I sure hope what is being speculated does NOT happen. If that is the case I will be very…annoyed to say the least.
Maybe One More Day could just provide Peter with the means to have One More Day with Aunt May where she tells him it was not his fault and so on (like how Dr. Strange gave him a few minutes with Uncle Ben)and her blessings give him the drive to keep doing good deeds.
I think they were going in a good direction with Pete as a school teacher, tons of opportunity for new supporting cast (adult and high school drama) but they have thrown that all away due to all the mega-crossovers. A shame too.
The part that really irks me is that all of these high concept sci-fi and fantasy elements are NOT what Spidey is about. He is an urban hero, throw in mystic totems, new powers, time travel and you are just getting too far from the core of the character. What next, he will become Strange’s apprentice????

I think that sounds somewhat accurate and what I expected with this story. Based on the cover for #545 I think that the Peter from the future from earlier in JMS’s run will be involved. I mean, we know that somehow Peter is going to be back living with Aunt May, with a secret identity, it’s just an issue of how. The Swing Shift issue from FCBD, is apparently in Brand New Day continuity. I think it’s kind of lame, since it basically undoes all the visionary work that JMS has done in the past 5 years and in no way rewards the readers who have followed his entire run.

Here is what I don’t get:
Isn’t 95 years old or whatever a good time to die? Why kill of a young healthy relationship, to save an old Bat that will die soon anyhow?

“Here is what I don’t get:

And already died once, anyway.

And if you’re Uncle Ben, aren’t you thinking: “Christ, why not bring me back once and awhile and something other than a What If? I’ve got to kick Jarvis’ butt.”
I’m just shocked that Dan Coyle has an opinion on something as mainstream as this. (just kidding, Dan, you’re “this changes everything forever!” [forever meaning "18 months"] is probably dead-on correct)

Tim: Yeah, I think no matter how good “Brand New Day” is- and I concede it might be REALLY good (though not from the writers everyone expects) the fact that they had to jump through such bizarre hoops to get there means that no one will… I dunno.
If they really were serious about getting rid of MJ, they would have done it already. Quesada and company aren’t confident enough to really pull that trigger- and given that only comics creators and not the majority of the fans seem to have a problem with the marriage, with good reason.
