Oregon Live has details on a Dec. 6 art show at Floating World Comics in Portland, Ore. called Spacenight: A Tribute to Bill Mantlo:
Jason Leivian, the owner of Floating World, plans to ask “hundreds of artists” to donate an illustration — original art or digital print — of Rom Spaceknight, a minor Marvel character — and major cult figure — that ran from December 1979 through August 1986. All proceeds from the December 6 show will be delivered to Bill’s brother and caregiver, Mike Mantlo.
“The first comic I ever read was ROM Spaceknight, a silver cyborg fighting evil monsters through the universe” Leivian wrote in an e-mail. “I collected every issue until the series was cancelled at #75. When I asked the comic clerk why it was cancelled, he kindly replied, ‘Well, they just ran out of stories to tell.’

If you look really carefully–this week’s South Park featured ROM fighting on the side of our imaginations–no joke.
I blurted out, “Holy Shit, ROM the Space Knight!”
Good times.

Micronauts was first series where I actually went into a comic book shop to purchase back issues to get a complete collection. It was also the only time I ever subscribed to anything (well, my parents got me a sub to World magazine). Thanks, Bill, for sharing your imagination with me!

I was a huge fan of both Rom and Micronauts. Great stuff.
And great idea! I hope some of the art finds its way online so I can see lots of cool Rom images.
