The Millarworld board responds to the Wanted trailer. Watch the trend…:
“Grats Mark. There’ll be no living with you after this…”
“Looked good. Then again, so did Nightwatch, and that was a train-wreck of a film, hope Wanted turns out much, much better.”
“Looks like a nice action flick. One of the few movies where it pays off to be unfaithful to the source material.”
“Wow! That trailer was terribly underwhelming. It left me with absolutely no feeling of ‘I GOTTA SEE THIS!!!’ In fact, (to me) it looked like any other genre film of it’s ilk. Fish out of water now Bad Ass Super Killer. If I hadn’t read (and loved) the mini-series, I would have passed on this based on the trailer alone.”
“Wanted the comic was about a bunch of powerful psychopaths gleefully having their way with the world. It’s hard to tell, but Wanted the movie seems to be about a bunch of powerful, responsible people trying to protect the world by killing people. Taking a nasty, subversive piece of work and turning it (as others have pointed out) into a typical action movie.”
“Sorry, nothing about that trailer made me want to see the movie. It looks like all the interesting parts of the comics have been stripped away, leaving a very generic gun-fu flick. More than happy to be wrong though.”
“You know, that trailer made me want to see the movie. But that movie didn’t seem like an adaption of Wanted. Wanted for me was fun because it was basically ‘What if the super-villians won?’ The result was a war over how much bad was too much, with some wanting to generate a good profit off of their antics and others just wanting to go hog-wild. But none of the characters talked about how they were killing one to save many…it was all about what you did when you had the power. So I’ll go see it, mostly because of the creators of the source material. But I think Hollywood missed a great chance to satire all the super-hero films that have come out lately… to walk on the wild side.”
“I’m dissappointed. It looks like just another action flick….when it could have been so much more. I wanted to see Wesley falling from the sky capping superheroes and Fox flying an F-16. I hope it makes buttloads of money for you, Mark, and maybe it’ll come to the local theater where my friends work so that I can see it for free. I just wish we couldn’ve gotten all of the super-action and tongue-in-cheek nods to Adam West and Christopher Reeve….”

This is literally a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” thing for me, I’ll admit.
On the one hand, I thought Wanted was a terrible comic book, showcasing all of Millar’s worst traits as a writer.
On the other hand, if the trailer for the movie version of Wanted is any indication, then it will bear almost no resemblance to the comic book it’s supposedly based on … and yet, it’s still going to suck, just in a completely different way from the source material.
Oooh, gun-fu, car chases and Angelina Jolie! Fucking yawn. Even as a heterosexal male, I can no longer muster any interest in Angelina. Her acting has gone from promising to bland, and I never thought I could say this about such an attractive woman, but she’s in the media so much that I’ve literally grown tired of the sight of her.

McAvoy reminded me of Tobey Maguire. I do rather suspect that I’m going to enjoy seeing him get the shit kicked out of him.
I liked Freeman’s “question,” but I prefer Millar’s original, more honest version.
This is the adaptation that really isn’t going to want to drive people to the original comic, though, isn’t it? “Eminem? Halle Berry? Da Fug?!”

As ever, Graeme is as unbiased in his coverage as your average hour of Fox News.

Craigy: Which reminds me, we need a Seaguy movie.

I wholeheartedly endorse the derailing of this thread to the promise of a SEAGUY movie.
Jake Gyllenhall (sp?) as Seaguy. Directed by…uhm…man, most of the big names coming to mind would be too showy, or showy in the wrong way. Help me out here.

graeme, seriously, get a new schtick. this shit is idiotic.

The difference, of course, being that Graeme doesn’t claim to be “fair and balanced” …
Attention, Mark Millar fans: Your Idol is already one of the top dogs at one of the two biggest comic book publishers in America, and he’s probably going to get a not-inconsiderable sum or money and media exposure from this movie, and yet, you still can’t stand to see him criticized?
When you can’t stand to see popular things criticized, the fault lies not in the critics, but in you.
Popular things should be criticized, if for no other reason than that they are popular, and I say this even about popular things that I like.

Here you go, then: an unequivocally positive Mark Millar story.
Spot the irony in this article and win a prize!
The prize is the right to strut around with your chest puffed out like a rooster for five minutes. You’ll need – I say, you will need a friend to hum that clucky little tune from Foghorn Leghorn while you do it, though.
(Is it irony? Or is it an amusing coincidence? I just plain don’t know anymore. *sob*)

I’ve been suspended/banned from Millarworld myself at least twice. I’m not a fan of the place, don’t post there anymore.
It doesn’t mean I’m a fan of self propagating spin either.
You can only grind an axe so long before you start to lose your own credibility.
Graeme is probably one of my favorite bloggers here but Christ, this is like watching a 5 year old who wasn’t invited to the birthday party throwing stones at the popular kids who were.

Okay, everyone’s apparently (over)reacting to this as some part of Graeme’s Millar axe-grinding, but I’m just not seeing it.
The post doesn’t even contain a word about Millar himself, good or bad, by Graeme.
I’ll be damned if I’ll be deprived of the occasional “good old Rampage” style “check out the people freak out on this board” post just because people are hypersensitive about Graeme ever posting about Millar again just because they’re all touchy about some “pattern”.
This just doesn’t count as an anti-Millar screed, even though you’re all (comically over) reacting to it as though it were one.
