A collection of interesting quotes from last week:
“This is for killing my boy in the first place.”
–A super-powered Pa Kent, as he punches Doomsday in Action Comics #857
“Sure, that’s right– there’s a conspiracy of artless crassness afoot. Everyone’s in on it; didn’t you hear? 100% of comic creators are white, male pigs, who don’t know a damn thing about art, or people, and frankly couldn’t care less.
“Why is it like this? Why, when there are plenty of examples of praiseworthy comics, is so much of the ‘commentary’ consist of unsupportable generalizations? It’s up the hill backwards, it is.”
–Artist Stuart Immonen, commenting on two recent blog posts
“I’ve come to realize that I still need my New Comic Day. But where I used to think I needed it to keep my favorite stories from getting spoiled or being more “in the know” than the rest of the comic book community, I now need New Comic Day for my mental and physical health. I need the day as an anchor with which I can tether my sad little rowboat of sanity for an hour or so, not having to battle the increasingly turbulent societal waves crashing down on a daily basis.”
“And I know there are a lot of guys that probably don’t think about it that way–probably because they’ve never had to–but for a lot of women, what happens to Tigra is worst nightmare time, and it is inextricably linked to the concept of rape. Being attacked, being powerless, being humiliated by and for a group of men in a dark alley is one of those scenarios that makes my blood run cold, because it’s not just a fantastically nefarious act perpetrated by a supervillain, it’s something far more plausible than I really want to think about. Things like this happen to women, and they happen all the time, albeit it with fewer costumes and codenames. And there’s something even more demoralizing about the fact that it happens to a superheroine, to someone is supposed to be able to hold her own in a fistfight, but ends up utterly powerless.”
–Laura Hudson on New Avengers #35
“In short, I do not see this so much as a ‘fridging’ as merely a temporary stay in one of those styrofoam coolers you take to the beach.”
Valerie Dorazio, on Countdown #27
“I’m happy to sell “PvP” to any Hollywood jackasses willing to pay enough to take my wife on a nice vacation. But so far, no jackasses have approached with a serious offer. And those that have are barely offering enough to take the wife to Wendy’s for a value meal.”
–PvP creator Scott Kurtz
“I’m good friends with Neil, and that still didn’t get me the job.”
Actress Selma Blair, who says she won’t be playing Death on the silver screen
“Think about how frightening it would be to live in the Marvel Universe now. Think about being a political commentator not knowing if your thoughts were being monitored because of a blog post you made. Think about being someone in power, not knowing if you were actually standing beside who you thought you were at a government banquet. Think about being a person with extraordinary abilities who’s forced to sign up with The Initiative or stay in the closet for fear of prosecution. Finally, think about being an ordinary citizen having to tolerate a de facto police state because of an accident in a small town in Connecticut.”
–Kevin Church on the post-Civil War Marvel Universe
“If you can tread familiar ground and make it look like terra incognita, and you can write well, you’re golden, man, and I don’t mean Michael. That’s what superhero comics companies look for anyway, whether they realize it or not.”

Immonen just got on my top five artist list. We really don’t concentrate on those who do it right enough.

I agree with him that we don’t focus on the positives enough, but in the comment section a couple of people absolutely schooled Mr. Immonen. If you’re making a statement about generalizations, it’s probably not a good idea to state it in the form of a generalization.
