Comic creator Richard Marcej is blogging from this weekend’s Small Press Expo in Bethesda, Md. He was able to take a break from his table to go listen to Gilbert Hernandez yesterday:
I’ve always liked Gilberts work since first picking up a really early issue of Love & Rockets in the early 80’s. But after hearing him speak as he talked about his work—– I’m even more of a fan!
Gilbert and I are pretty close in age (he’s four years older than I) and a lot of what he spoke about from how he works, what he likes to write about and his overall enjoyment of comics, practically mirrors my own views. I like how he was more influenced by watching old B&W movies then by anything he saw in comics while growing up.
When questioned what he listens to while drawing his comics I had to laugh to hear that he does exactly what I do. He listens to movies and TV shows. Having seen the films and shows before all he needs to do is listen to the dialogue and occasionally look up at the screen.
Check out what Richard’s selling at his table here.
You know who else is at SPX? Our own Chris Mautner, who will have a report after the weekend’s festivities.
