Sugarshock!

A collection of interesting quotes from this week:

“This is so weird. I like paper. I like to turn the page. I like to read comics in the bathroom. Suddenly, all of my work is primary online. Weird.”

Fabio Moon, artist on Sugarshock, among others

“Sin City was just this brilliant translation into human form. And it just resonated with me that life is kind of comic book-like, not super hero-like, for me. A good comic book for me is all about a continual presence of parallel triumph and intensity in extremes, and that’s pretty much life these days.”

–Singer KT Tunstall

“I taught Chris Ware in my fiction workshop too. It’s that or teach Proust, I suppose. I love Ware’s books because they are so generous and abundant as to be almost selfish and demanding. He creates a suffocating atmosphere, a horrible one, and it goes on for pages and pages and pages, and I feel like I’m going to literally asphyxiate, I’m kind of hyperventilating while reading — plus the microscopic print makes me feel physically uncomfortable, invaded, imposed upon, I’m getting a headache, I can hardly breathe, I haven’t eaten… and then when I think he’s finally moved on to something else, it turns out that he’s still talking about the same thing from a different angle. And his work is so full of emotion and loss and pain and fury. I am in awe of him.”

Deb Olin Unferth, writer and a creative writing teacher at the University of Kansas

“You see, with children’s picture books, the writer isn’t allowed to talk about the pictures at all. That’s considered the artist’s province. With novels, words have to substitute for artwork. You want a castle, describe a castle; you want a medieval house, explain wattle and daub. And with scripts for movies, though there is a bit more leeway suggesting the look of the thing, in the end it’s the director who makes the final decisions. But writing those graphic short stories, I got to combine all three.”

–Writer Jane Yolen

“In the off-chance that Ms. Garofalo reads this, that was beyond cool and totally made my week. If you ever want free comics swag, a complimentary Lost action figure, a role in the Y movie, etc., I hope you’ll drop me a line.”

Brian K. Vaughan, after Garofalo plugged Y: The Last Man on Real Time with Bill Maher

  1. Scott William Foley Says:

I really enjoyed the quote from KT Tunstall. I suddenly feel bad about wanting to drill a hole into my head every time I heard that one song. You know. That one song.

    Good quote though.

  2. Jason "CodeGuy" Bryant Says:

If anyone wants to follow the link for the Garofalo quote, she mentions Y: The Last Man at about 4:50 into the video clip. You can get most of the context for her mentioning it by starting about 30 seconds before that.

  3. Jaap Says:

The artwork in KT’s Newest CD booklet, Drastic Fantastic is - by the way - all textless comic. Drawn by Robin Footitt.

  4. Bully Says:

Great roundup! (Easy-on-the-eyes formatting, too, thanks!)

  5. JK Parkin Says:

Thanks Bully … I meant to email you after posting to see if the asterisks helped.

  6. Toneloak Says:

I say we call him Capt. Bling Bling or The Chrome Captain of Bling(CCB). Or, the Chromium Guardian.
