The Hollywood Reporter posted the latest roles filled in the suspenseful Star Trek film casting. Hikaru Sulu will be John Cho, best known as “that Asian guy” in Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.

    Uhhhh… huh.

I love both those guys, but I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around this casting. Maybe that’s the problem, that I know what the original actors were like in those parts and I know what these new actors are like, so they clash in my head.

That doesn’t mean they won’t be good at it, though. It’s just kinda weird.

  2. Tom Says:

Harold and Shaun Go To Rigel VII.

  3. ubershep Says:

If you watch Cho in “Better Luck Tomorrow,” (which was referenced as a good, quick joke in “Harold & Kumar”) then you would know the guy can act quite well.

I’m having a bigger time understanding Simon Pegg. I was never really a fan of his, and I don’t see the appeal.

  4. Sean B Says:

That photoshop pic really sells the casting for me. I hope the movie looks just like that, with big heads and crazy faces.

  5. chrisd Says:

There are so many original stories with original premises and this is the best Hollywood can come up with?

Recasting the old Star Trek crew?

    gimme a break

  6. Ye Olde Iowa Says:

I think this could be really good. Pegg has a lot more range than I think people give him credit for and I think Cho has a lot of promise. I am totally floored by this, but I am interested.

It’s interesting how the cast is being pulled from some interesting places. Zach Quinto (Spock) hit it big with Heroes, Pegg is a cult phenom between “Spaced” and his movies, and “Harold and Kumar” was a bit of a cult hit as well. Considering Star Trek is positioned quite well between the mainstream and the cult, I like the way they are approaching casting name actors.

  7. Charles Skaggs Says:

Wee Hughie’s all kinds of awesome, especially on SPACED, but I really don’t see him as Scotty. And I take it Sulu is Korean now instead of being Japanese? Oh, my…

  8. m@ Says:

Well, they cast a Chinese actor to play Jin, one of the Koreans on Lost.

  9. Tom Says:

Daniel Dae Kim, who plays Jin, is Korean.

  10. gwangung Says:

They cast a Korean actor to play a Japanese character in HEROES.

  11. gwangung Says:

By the way, folks…do you KNOW John’s ethnic background? Or are you just assuming? Lots of inter-Asian mingling among Chinese/Japanese/Korean/Filipino Americans, you know….

  12. Stephanie Chan Says:

Most media reports John Cho having Korean heritage.

  13. seadevil Says:

Good for Simon Pegg, though I admit I was rooting for Paul McGillion

  14. chasdepp Says:

If they cast Beyoncé as Uhura, I’m sold.

  15. Bill Says:

Zoe Saldana has already been cast as Uhura.

    http://trekmovie.com/2007/09/17/saldana-is-new-uhura/

  16. gwangung Says:

Oh, I know Cho’s background….I’m just wondering if other people know it, or are just assuming…or assuming they know exactly who his ancestors were….

I know plenty of Japanese/Chinese and Chinese/Korean actors (not to mention hapa actors). Not a big step to assume Sulu could be the same way in the 23rd Century, which makes discussion of the “authenticity” of the actors a bit problematic.

  17. Eric Says:

People being up in arms about the ethnicity of the actor’s interests me. I mean, are people saying that an actor with German ancestory can not play an English character or that a man can not play a woman? The actors are playing a character, so I don’t think that their ancestory should limit them.

  18. Bully Says:

And they better never cast an Englishman as a Frenchman, either!

  19. T-Bone Says:

Star Trek 11: The Wrath Of Shaun

  20. Captain Infinity Says:

I can’t believe they cast a human as a Vulcan, either!

  21. Bill Reed Says:

    Seriously? Seriously!?

Dammit, I didn’t want to have to see this, but if Pegg is in it…

  22. Brainlock Says:

No offense, bu I can see Nick Frost as Scotty better than his mate, Simon.

    and John Cho?
    John freaking CHO???

    sorry, I can’t see it.
    Quinto as Spock, yes.
    Pegg as Scott, maybe.
but Cho as Sulu?? not buying it.

what next? Josh “Pacey” Jackson as Kirk??

  23. robbie Says:

nathan fillion should be capatain james tiberius kirk. that would make this movie absolutely amazing.

  24. l.k. Says:

Nathan Fillion is an AMAZING choice for Kirk.

  25. Alex Says:

Not that I was really interested in what was in this film, having already seen all 10 of ‘em and most of them five series episodes I didn’t really excpect much. But let’s be real, this Cho guy who has only done comediac stuff that I only paid money for one of which and it wasn’t Kumar. Most of them weren’t even that good. It’s already not going to be much.

As for the other guy…. hard to look at.

  26. J.D. Lombardi Says:

I thought they were trying for Matt Damon as Kirk.

  27. Notorious JMG Says:

“what next? Josh “Pacey” Jackson as Kirk??”

Actually, there’s a couple roles I’ve seen him in where he’s GOT the Kirk look… you know, pasty, a little pudgy, wandering eye, the kind of guy you wouldn’t want to let your daughter within 100 light years of…

And as far as Sulu’s heritage… it’s not part of “canon”, but there were a couple scenes dropped from Star Trek IV, one wherein Sulu encounters his great-great-great-grandfather (a little Japanese boy), and one in which he tells the helicopter pilot from the plexiglass factory that he was born in the Philippines. So he’s Filipino of Japanese descent… how many actors who fit that description are there, really?

  28. rail Says:

I was under the impression that they’ve already cast Kirk: Chris Pine…now make with another crazy face mock-up.

  29. KS Says:

Casting Nathan Fillion would not only be an awesome choice, but a braver one. Due to the suckage of the last two Trek installments… okay, the second to last one, Paramount’s Trek cash-cow is threatened. As a franchise, Star Trek has earned Paramount more than a billion dollars in syndication, books, magazines, movie distribution, collectables, etc ad nauseam; Stargate proves that the potential profits/earnings for cult sci-fi is still in demand.

In effect, Paramount is trying desperately to bleed the stone dry. But since the finale of Deep Space Nine, the marginal returns (economic verbose for the difference between investment and earnings over time) have been relatively poor. The casting choices… and decision to use JJ Abrams (prime adult ADD canditate, leaving Alias to flounder like he did *grrrr*) are sourced from a desire to kick-start a resurgence in the Trek franchises’ profit potential.

As mention up-thread, the casting of these beloved cannon characters is aimed at other/similar cult T.V. shows: Heroes, Deadwood and the star of cult movies “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz”… if memory serves. Paramount producers are hoping to grab the younger sci-fi audience who probably didn’t see Trek’s glory years and only know of “Voy-Dominatrix-Borg-Barbie-ger” and the one with “that Vulcan Lady” (to parapase a Buffy episode).

I’m sorry for the extensive post but upon reading the above, I noticed that you were trying to compare the new actors with the cannon characters but Paramount and the evil, talentless, Trek producers/destroyers Berman and Braga are NOT making this movie as any form of homage to a once truly great show and are not trying to do justice to irreplacable cannon characters.

Berman, Braga and Paramount producers are just trying to restart a floundering franchise in anticipation of rockets margianal returns (profits). You see, the ‘investment’ is already spent; this movie’s budget is inconsequential to millions spent on Star Trek’s paid and incidental advertising during it’s glory years. Rather than create a new, groundbreaking and awesome sci-fi show (which probably gets CANCELLED! Mal Reynolds, come back!), they are aiming to trade in on the past success of the Star Trek. Not respectfully, not in homage to Roddenberry’s creativity or TOS/TNG/DS9′s leadership in serial sci-fi tv; merely in hopes of exploiting the resurgence of sci-fi’s popularity.

This means casting newly “breakthrough” stars from the currently popular TV shows in hopes of doing achieving precisely what you see in previous replies: reluctantly agreeing to watch the show. Manipulation, defined. I am truly sorry for anyone who is upset that their beloved characters are being recast and re-interpreted for modern viewers. But Braga, Berman and Paramount wont care that they are treading on somewhat “holy ground”, they are just exploiting Roddenberry’s universe – with a cast of popular actors to attract a new audience – to cash in.

Best wishes… except to this movie. I am vehemently opposed to any movie, production company of media source that tries to manipulate me. Reliving past glory is why fanfic was invented! :-) Have a safe and shiny New Year!
