Thor would cost $300M to make

Are you as hyped about the Thor movie as I am? Well, The Guardian has an article where Matthew Vaughn details his week and it turns out the movie has been priced at a staggering $300M as it is currently scripted:

In truth, I did not treat him very well as I forced him to work for the whole weekend – he is the writer on Thor, my next film, which I am directing with Marvel. The weekend was a success – we finished the script and celebrated with an ’88 Palmer, and I was feeling good and ready to tackle the necessary evil of film promotion.

[...]

My phone has just rung. Marvel loves the script. The only problem is that it has been costed at $300m and they ask how I am going to reduce it by $150m. I think I prefer being asked what it’s like working with De Niro.

Exactly how much CGI did he have planned?  Either way, I’m really looking forward to this, and you should be too.

Except he’s just been asked to slash the apparent budget in half. Which means there goes most of the CGI. Sounds a little worrying.

What was the budget of Superman Returns? Wasn’t that nearing $300M? I’d hope that a Thor movie would have a similar budget.

  3. Jason M. Bryant Says:

Superman Returns didn’t cost $300 million. It didn’t even cost $200 million.

It got reported as costing more than $200 million because they were counting all the false starts from the previous attempts at making a new Superman movie. Bryan Singer says that his movie cost about $185 million.

  4. Billy Ray Says:

If enough of the effects budget goes toward creating a Kirby-esque Asgard, I’m in.
