A roundup of some movie-related news, only some of which is (barely) comics-related:
Terminator franchise to rise again with Salvation
Variety reports that Warner Bros. has acquired the North American distribution rights for Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, the first part of a planned trilogy that will relaunch the popular series.
Production will begin early next year, with the film set to open in summer 2009.
The franchise received a boost in May, when the newly formed Halcyon Company teamed with Terminator 3 executive producer Moritz Borman to acquire the film, merchandising and licensing rights from former executives of Carolco Pictures, which produced the original movies.
Terminator 3 writers John Brancato and Michael Ferris have completed the screenplay for Salvation, which will be set in the future.
A Warner Bros.-produced TV series, The Sarah Connor Chronicles, is set to debut on Fox at mid-season. Dynamite Entertainment has the license for comic books based on Terminator 2.
Despite reports, Warner Bros. says it’s backing female leads
Earlier this week, Warner Bros. executive Jeff Robinov sparked controversy when he was quoted as saying, “We are no longer doing movies with women in the lead.”
But Variety reports the studio is moving forward with three films starring female leads, and Robinov is still searching for a script and a star for Wonder Woman.
On her personal blog, our own Lisa Fortuner posts a response from Warner Bros. Customer Service denying that Robinov even made the comments.
Quick hits:
• Hulk star Eric Bana has been cast as the villain in Star Trek
• Will Ferrell will star in the $100 million adaptation of Land of the Lost
