I’ve pointed to the ever-growing wave of manga in previous installments — including a time when the number of titles from Tokyopop outnumbered those from Marvel — but this week retailer/blogger Christopher Butcher notes what may be a watershed moment in the “manga/comics” divide: When you remove variant covers from the equation, there are more new manga released this week than new Western comics.
It’s a difference of just one book — 63 to 62, by Butcher’s count — but it’s still pretty remarkable. First, the American dollar and the Canadian dollar reach parity, and now this. Will wonders never cease?
So, yeah, that’s a lot of manga.
To see what comics — manga and otherwise — Chris Mautner and I think are worth mentioning, just keep reading. As always, let us know your choices in the comments below.
Chris’ picks of the week: Walt and Skeezix, Vol. 3,
and Sundays with Walt and Skeezix, Vol. 1
No harm meant toward Jim Scancarelli, but it must be hard to those coming to Gasoline Alley for the first time in today’s comics pages to ever imagine how truly great this strip was. In the hands of creator Frank King, though, it was a masterful, wistful rumination on the joy of life and the melancholy realization of the passage of time. D&Q’s third volume in its ongoing series collects the years 1925-26, with Skeezix growing out of toddlerhood, and the usual winning essay by Jeet Heer.
It was King’s Sunday pages, however, where his imagination really took off, and Sundays, from the people who brought you that massively oversized Little Nemo collection, should really do them justice. At nearly $100, it’s certainly pricey, but I’m willing to bet it’s worth every dollar.
Kevin’s pick of the week:
Manga: The Complete Guide
I’m pretty sure this is the first time I’ve named a non-comic as my pick of the week, but Jason Thompson’s Manga: The Complete Guide deserves the special mention. The nearly 600-page book, crammed with reviews of more than 900 manga series that have been released in English in North America, touts itself as the “ideal manga companion,” and it delivers just that. The starred reviews, by Thompson and others (including Shaenon Garrity, Carl Gustav Horn, Adam Stephanides and Jen Wang), are concise and occasionally funny, and demonstrate to me how little I really know about manga: Every other page seems to contain a manga I’ve never heard of, or know by name only. Needless to say, my shopping list has grown significantly.
But as wonderful as the reviews are, perhaps just as valuable are the introduction covering the history of manga, the appendices on age ratings and the Japanese language, and the sidebars devoted to genres and subgenres (from cooking to magical girls to sports). The latter provide helpful bookshelf-expanding lists of titles in each of the categories, so if you enjoy Fullmetal Alchemist or One Piece, you may want to check out, say, The Good Witch of the West.
David Welsh is spot-on when he describes Manga: The Complete Guide as “the ultimate user’s manual”: It’s an ideal resource for librarians, retailers, reviewers, and manga readers — both longtime and new. I’d also recommend it to parents who want to know more about what their children are reading.
Little Lulu, Vol. 17: The Valentine trade paperback
Chris: With Dark Horse putting out these collections and the Harvey Comics volumes, there really is no reason to complain that there aren’t any comics for kids anymore.
Absolute Sandman, Vol. 2, hardcover
Kevin: If only I were Scrooge McDuck-rich, I’d buy all of DC’s Absolute editions. But I’m not, so I can only write about them. This second volume in The Sandman series collects Issues 21-39, with remastered coloring. Also, plenty of extras, like the complete script for Issue 23.
Captain Carrot and the Final Ark #1 (of 3)
Chris: Speaking of comics for kids, here’s the return of everyone’s favority anthropomorphic superhero team. Everyone except John Byrne, of course.
Green Arrow/Black Canary #1
Kevin: Considering the ending of the JLA Wedding Special, and that Connor Hawke is shown on the cover, it kind of creeps me out that the solicitation describes this as an “all-new adventure that brings the Star City-crossed lovers together!” Ewww, Dinah! He’s your stepson!
Presents, Vol. 1
Chris: CMX enters the horror manga market with this collection of short stories by Kanako Inuki all centered around the theme of evil gifts, with a creepy little girl in the Crypt Keeper role. Art-wise, it’s very reminiscent of Kazuo Umezu, if you’re looking for a reference point.
Simon Dark #1
Chris: DC Comics gets into the Halloween spirit with this new series from Steve Niles and Scott Hampton, about a Frankestein-like creature who pulls cool-ass martial arts moves against an evil cult that likes to blindfold and shoot innocent people. I honestly didn’t care much for the preview, but fans of Niles’ previous horror work will likely get a kick out of the proceedings.
Amazing Spider-Girl #13 (zombie variant)
Punisher War Journal #12 (zombie variant)
Runaways #28 (zombie variant)
Wolverine #58 (zombie variant)
Kevin: You’ve got to be kidding. As best I can tell, only one of these issues — Wolverine #58 — may have anything remotely zombie-related going on inside.
Punisher War Journal #12
Kevin: I read the first trade paperback of this series last week and, despite having no previous attachment to the character, and no interest whatsoever in the Civil War threads that wove through the story, I really enjoyed it. Now I need to get caught up on the title.
30 Days of Night #1 fifth anniversary edition
Kevin: With two new miniseries — Beyond Barrow and Red Snow — and various tie-ins and collections — the Sourcebook, Scriptbook, the complete trilogy, etc. — no one can say IDW Publishing isn’t taking full advantage of the release of the 30 Days of Night movie later this month. But a fifth-anniversary edition of the original miniseries’ first issue seems odd, particularly when the complete story is readily available as a hardcover and a trade paperback. Who buys the anniversary reprint of only the first part of the story?
The Art of Naruto: Uzumaki hardcover
Kevin: For the Naruto fan who has everything — well, everything except those nine volumes Viz is releasing through the end of the year. This 148-page, full-color hardcover showcases the work of Masahi Kishimoto, and features more than 100 pages of artwork never before published in North America. There’s also an extensive interview with Kishimoto, and notes about each illustration. At $19.99, I’d call that a bargain.
Bleach, Vol. 21
Chris: If the shoes and video games just don’t satisfy your Tite Kubo craving, here’s a new volume of the manga.
Brian Jacques’ Redwall graphic novel
Chris: A graphic novel adaptation of the first Redwall book. At least I think it’s an adaptation, since I’m not familiar with Brian Jacques’ universe, like, at all. Art’s by Bret Blevins, though.
The Cat Returns Picture Book
Chris: While decidely one of Studio Ghibli’s lesser efforts, The Cat Returns is, nevertheless, a delightful little anime about a girl spirited away to a feline universe. My daughter’s a fan of the film, so I’d at least consider picking this up for her.
The EC Archives: Vault of Horror, Vol. 1, hardcover
Chris: The EC hardcover roll-out continues! Good Lord! *Choke*
Garth Ennis’ Chronicles of Wormwood trade paperback
Chris: Twenty dollars seems like a lot for a collection of a six-issue miniseries. I was curious in the concept, though, and I’d at least thumb through this in the store. Garth Ennis fans who missed the pamphlets will want to take note of this release.
James Sturm’s America hardcover
Joseph graphic novel
Chris: Two more from Drawn and Quarterly, who seems to be on a publishing roll this month. The first is a hardbound collection of Sturm’s “America” stories: “The Rapture,” “Hundreds of Feet Below Daylight” and “The Golem’s Mighty Swing.” These books hit me like a brick wall — particularly “Rapture”– when I read them for the first time back in the late ’90s. If you missed any of their previous iterations, this book is a fantastic way to get caught up on some of the best comics from the last decade.
The second book is a very short, surreal piece by Nicolas Robel about a boy with really big hands. And now you know as much as I do about the book.
In the Studio: Visits with Contemporary Cartoonists softcover
Chris: A softcover version of what was one of the better “noncomics” comics-related books of last year. Comics Art editor Todd Hignite talks to folks like Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez, Robert Crumb, Daniel Clowes, Chris Ware and many more about their work habits, influences and such. Lots of lovely pictures and insightful text.
Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories Box Set
Kevin: I ordered this, and I’m not ashamed to admit it.
King Lear graphic novel
Chris: Having tackled Beowulf, Gareth Hinds sets his sites on Edward De Vere. Excuse me, Shakespeare. I honestly didn’t care much for his version of Beowulf, which I thought was too literal, but I’m always curious to see how comic artists attempt to adapt theatrical material.
Mineshaft #20
Chris: Mineshaft is an oddball alternative art ‘zine published by Everett Rand and Gioia Palmieri, with a heavy focus on ’60s underground cartoonists. This 20th issue is a special anniversary one, with an R. Crumb centerfold.
Missile Happy!, Vol. 1
Kevin: I’m so behind on my reading at this point, but flipping through the first volume of Miki Kiritani’s romantic comedy, I’ll say it looks promising (and I’m not even the target audience): Over-protective Mikako goes undercover to find out more about the man who wants to marry her sister, and ends up moving in with him. I’ll go out on a limb and guess she falls in love with him.
Naruto, Vol. 19
Naruto, Vol. 20
Naruto, Vol. 21
Kevin: Naruto! Naruto! Naruto! The next phase of Viz Media’s “Naruto Nation” campaign begins with three more volumes of the insanely popular manga. And this time, there’s not a big lag between the book market and direct market!
Princess Ai: Ultimate Edition
Kevin: The first wave of Tokyopop’s Ultimate Edition series — brick-thick omnibus collections — is eclectic, to say the least: There’s Natsuki Takaya’s popular shojo fantasy, Fruits Basket; Koushun Takami and Masayuki Taguchi’s infamous Battle Royale; the video game-based Warcraft; and this, Princess Ai, by Misaho Kujiradou, Courtney Love and DJ Milky (aka Stuart Levy). Eh, maybe it only seems offbeat to me. Before the first volume of Princess Ai was released in 2004, there was a lot of snickering over singer/actor/public spectacle Love’s involvement. But, in fairness, it’s a perfectly decent, if unremarkable, romantic fantasy with lovely art by Kujiradou.
Sardine in Outer Space, Vol. 4, softcover
Town Boy softcover
Chris: Man, this is a really great week for all-ages comics. Here are two excellent titles from First Second. The first is a continuation of Guibert and Sfar’s “anything goes” series about a young futuristic pirate girl and her attempts to outwit the evil Supermuscleman. I like it’s manic, goofball pacing and bizzare imagination.
Town Boy, however, is the real gem. The second volume in Lat’s childhood “memoir” of growing up in Malaysia (Kampung Boy being the first), Town Boy is one of those magical types of books that is specific enough to provide a glimpse into a foreign culture, but familiar enough to make you recall your own youth. Buy this so we can see more of his work published on these shores soon.
Shortcomings hardcover
Chris: Adrian Tomine seems to often get picked as the whipping boy in the “alternative comics are boring and suck” argument, which, I can only assume means that those making it haven’t read his work, since it’s highly engaging and well-crafted material. Shortcomings is his longest story to date, about a sullen young Asian man who loses his girlfriend, attempts to fulfill his passion for white women and then tries to recover his girlfriend again. The devil’s not in the plot, folks, but in the details. I liked this book a lot.
Troubletown Told You So trade paperback
Chris: A collection of Lloyd Dangle’s very funny, very earnest, very left-wing editorial cartoons. Should be good for a laugh and/or to get you hot under the collar, depending upon where your sympathies lie.
Vampire Kisses: Blood Relatives, Vol. 1
Kevin: I’m not familiar with Ellen Schreiber’s young-adult novels on which this is based, but I like this first volume, largely because of the art by Rem. The story is kind of standard supernatural-romance fare, with an outsider-goth girl who’s in love with a handsome young vampire. It’s enjoyable enough, though, thanks to the aforementioned art, and the addition of a trouble-making gang of young vamps.
Yotsuba, Vol. 5
Chris: Time to do the happy Daddy dance!

Yes, you are absolutely right, that should read Guibert and Sfar. I don’t know why I wrote Trondheim. Kevin, can you fix that please?

It looks like slim pickings for new comics this week. Still I’ll pick Suicide Squad: Raise the Flag! #2, New Warriors #5 which continues to intrigue, and I’ll give Simon Dark #1 a look as well.
