Ah, the seesaw that is New Comics Day: Two weeks ago, there was a barrage of “big” comics, followed by a fairly low-key week. This go-around is light on major releases, but filled with plenty of solid comics.
Like what, you ask? Another issue of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8, another installment of the popular Sinestro War in Green Lantern Corps, the first issues of Jonathan Lethem and Farel Dalrymple’s Omega the Unknown and Ty Templeton and Juan Bobillo’s Howard the Duck.
Oh, and manga. Lots and lots of manga. Katherine Dacey-Tsuei counts 77 new releases this week; I’ll take her word on that.
To see what other titles Chris Mautner and I think are worth mentioning, just keep reading. As always, let us know your choices in the comments below.
Kevin’s pick of the week: The Kurosagi Corpse
Delivery Service, Vol. 4
A new volume of Eiji Otsuka and Housui Yamazaki’s quirky horror series is always cause for celebration. But this one deserves special recognition, as it features a guest appearance by Reiji Akiba, the paranormal investigator from Yamazaki’s three-volume manga, Mail. I love both series, both The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service is definitely my favorite. The tales of five Buddhist university students who help free souls trapped in their corpses are, at turns, disturbing, touching and funny. Otsuka and Yamazaki are unflinching, yet still somehow respectful, in their depictions of death. We’re shown the decaying bodies of suicide victims, dismembered corpses, and tortured killers, but they never seem intended to shock. Instead, they help to tell moving, if offbeat, stories about life, death, and what comes after.
Chris’ pick of the week: Comic Art Magazine #9
Adrian Tomine interviews Gilbert Hernandez. Tom DeHaven on the history of Dick Tracy. Anne Kominsky-Crumb on why she writes only autobiography. Profiles of Kaz and Lyonel Feininger. Comics by Dan Zettwoch. And an accompanying booklet by Ivan Brunetti on his cartooning philosophy. There’s a reason why this annual critical magazine has been so eagerly anticipated and beloved by the indie-comics crowd. There’s quite simply nothing as high quality out there right now.
Empowered, Vol. 2
Chris: I just read the first Empowered collection over my vacation and I must confess it’s better than I had any hope of it being. Not completely devoid of problems, mind you — it wants to have its cheesecake and eat it, too — but good enough that I’m willing to check out the second volume. Though I may wait a month or two as this is a pretty big release week.
Ghost in the Shell 1.5: Human Error Processor trade paperback
Kevin: This trade paperback collects Shirow Masamune’s “lost” Ghost in the Shell stories, created after his original manga. If you’re a fan and didn’t pick up the series in single-issue form, here’s your chance.
Harvey Comics Classics, Vol. 2: Richie Rich
Chris: Dark Horse knocked the ball out of the park with the Casper volume, forcing me to re-evaluate my previously tenacious belief that everything relating to the precious little ghost who just wanted to be friends sucked ass. Mayhap they shall do the same with that stalwart kid capitalist and Republican Richie Rich.
Sock Monkey: The “Inches” Incident trade paperback
Chris: For those of you waiting for the trade, here it is. I found this latest Sock Monkey series to be, if anything, more disturbing than Tony Millionaire’s other comic, the happily profane Maakies, what with all the evil ant colonies controlling the porcelain baby doll with the dead eyes and the smashed head. For me, that was a selling point. For you, perhaps not so much.
Faker #4 (of 6)
Kevin: I don’t know what to make of Mike Carey and Jock’s Vertigo miniseries about relationships and identity. The first issue left me scratching my head, and by the second I was thoroughly confounded … yet fully drawn in.
The Vinyl Underground #1
Kevin: It’s as if Vertigo made this new series just for me: a crime-noir series with occult elements by Si Spencer (Books of Magick: Life During Wartime, Torchwood), Simon Gane and Cameron Stewart, with covers by Sean Phillips. I hope it’s not just for me; others better be reading it, too.
Howard the Duck #1 (of 4)
Chris: I’m sure that Ty Templeton and Juan Bobillo are nice folks who kiss their mothers and help old ladies across the street, but I still have to wonder what the hell they were thinking in tackling a project like this. Even moving aside the issue of how badly creator Steve Gerber was treated on this book all those years ago (does this project even have Gerber’s blessing at all?) they’re competing against one of the most beloved cult classics of all of Marvel’s properties. Good luck, guys. You’ll need it.
Iron Man: Enter the Mandarin #2 (of 6)
Kevin: In the first issue, Joe Casey and Eric Canete gave us something I didn’t expect: an accessible and likable Tony Stark. Consider this the first step toward rehabilitating Iron Man before the movie debuts next year.
Omega the Unknown #1 (of 10)
Chris: Hey, it’s let’s make money off of Steve Gerber’s creations week! Jonathan Lethem and Farel Dalrymple (with Paul Hornschemeier providing colors) tackle an equally beloved — though much more obscure and, at the time, nowhere near successful — creation, about an overly intelligent boy and a superhero space alien who protects him. I read a PDF version of this over the weekend and it struck me as a strong, intriguing, though perhaps overly self-conscious and literary, debut. I haven’t read the original Gerber series, though, so it’s hard for me to compare.
Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane, Vol. 4: Still Friends
Kevin: This digest collects the final five issues. Sigh. I miss this book already.
Beowulf #1
Chris: The comic-book adaptation of the upcoming Neil Gaiman/Roger Avery/Robert Zemeckis film, with Chris Ryall and Gabriel Rodriguez. If you’re curious about the movie this is a good way to get a sneak preview, no doubt.
Complete Iron Devil hardcover
Chris: Didn’t this series almost close down a comic book shop when it was first serialized? If Lost Girls could barely blink an eye I doubt the collected release of this hardcore Frank Thorne book will do likewise. How times have changed.
Dragon Eye, Vol. 2
Le Chevalier d’Eon, Vol. 2
Kevin: Del Rey Manga sent me the first volumes of these series late last week, and I’m only now cracking them open. Kairi Fujiyama’s Dragon Eye is a fast-paced shonen fantasy about a boy and girl who train to become defenders of humanity. (Kids with swords fighting monsters; what’s not to like?) Le Chevalier d’Eon is a darker adventure, Kiriko Yumeji’s adaptation of Tow Ubukata’s novel about a cult in 18th century France that’s sacrificing young women to demonic forces. Of course, only one man can stop them: the titular character.
Dragon Head, Vol. 8 (of 10)
Chris: Not to be confused with Dragon Eye or Dragon Heart or Dragon Liver, if that’s around, too. This is the one about a bunch of teens barely surviving a horrible apocalyptic nightmare. Loads of fun.
I Killed Adolf Hitler
Chris: How can you go wrong with a title like that? Answer: You can’t. Especially if the book in question is by one-name Norwegian wonder Jason. Expect lots of time-traveling comedy involving stone-faced animal characters.
Injury Comics #1
Japan As Viewed By 17 Creators
Chris: If by some lucky chance your local comic store has ordered these, you should snap them up right away. That is all.
Lio: Happiness Is a Squishy Cephalopod
Chris: Oh, that my local paper carried Lio, easily one of the most delightful, macabre comic strips going these days! But no, instead we get Rex Morgan, MD, and The Fusco Brothers. Damn you, Fusco Brothers! Damn you to hell! At least there’s this new collection of strips to keep me warm at night.
Lost Squad trade paperback
Kevin: This miniseries was fun, if a little uneven. Still, I like the concept, about a ragtag group of Allied soldiers battling Hitler’s occult forces during World War II. Hollywood liked it, too: It’s been optioned as a movie.
MOME, Vol. 9
Chris: This Fantagraphics anthology seems as though it has finally found its niche. The latest issue collects work by Eleanor Davis, T. Edward Bak, Zak Sally, Andrice Arp, Jim Woodring and more.
Niger #2
Reflections #3
Chris: Two new issues in Fantagraphics’ ongoing Ignatz series of books, or pamphlets, or whatever you want to call them. Leila Marzocchi’s Niger struck me as one of the odder series (which is saying something), as it deals with a bunch of odd-looking birds protecting a … pupa, I guess. Reflections, on the other hand, is Marco Corno’s dreamlike fable involving sick children, pirates and memories. I’ll likely be buying both of these.
Remembrance of Things Past, Part 2: Within a Budding Grove, Vol. 2
Chris: Time to break out the madeleines.
Where’s Dennis?: The Magazine Cartoon Art of Hank Ketcham
Chris: A collection of Ketcham’s early, non-Dennis work. He spent a lot of time doing gag cartoons and illustrative work before he stumbled upon Dennis, so this should be a pretty good collection.
Bagel’s Lucky Hat hardcover
Chris: One thing I remember from Dave Cooper’s TCJ interview a few years ago is him saying how badly he wanted to break into the children’s book market. And now he has.
Kidding Around: 24 Postcard Book
Chris: A collection of postcard cartoons by Alexa Kitchen. Would that we all enjoyed such parental encouragement. Or such budding talent.

“To see what other titles Christ Mautner…”
Did I miss an announcement regarding Mautner’s promotion? Do I have to call him Your Holiness now?
In any event, agreed on The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service, Vol. 4 as pick of the week. I’ve missed this book! And a guest appearance by Reiji Akiba will help ease the pain of his series’ ending.

Ha! What’s worse is that I copied and pasted that paragraph from the installment two weeks ago.

I meant to say something last week, but was too busy healing the sick and making the lame walk.
