Mortal Kombat vs. DC rumor has game fans worried

Mortal Kombat by Midway Games

Gaming blogs from to TRMK to Gaming Today are reporting on a formerly dismissed rumor that the next Mortal Kombat game released by Chicago-based game developer Midway could be Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Comics characters.

The rumor was written off by most online gaming fans when it surfaced recently on the IGN message boards in a post by someone who supposedly has a “friend” inside the company, but now TRMK has cited their own sources who have confirmed the next MK game will indeed be a “vs.” style game. Added to statements by developers that they are “reinventing everything from the ground up,” gamers and MK fans are starting to think the formerly dismissed rumor might have some merit.

Fans of the Marvel vs. Capcom game might like the possibility. However, the idea of a game like Mortal Kombat, known for its gory fatalities, pairing with the likes of anti-killing superheroes like Batman and Superman still seems far-fetched. After all, being a long-time MK player myself, I can’t imagine getting quite the same thrill out of Sub-Zero’s finishing move if it’s Batman’s spine he’s ripping out – and DC would like that even less. And MK fans are not happy about the suggestion that game developers might, to appease DC Comics, release the newest MK version as a non-fatality game that will be rated T.

I think it’d be cool to see Superman split someone in half and then heat-vision the pieces. TOASTY!!!

  2. Jeffrey Says:

    “TOASTY!!!

That shouldn’t have made me laugh, but it did.

  3. Elijah Jurke Says:

Why shouldn’t it have made you laugh?

  4. B|ackPanther Says:

    This isn’t a good idea.

  5. Bill Nolan Says:

This totally fits in with the modern trend of DC as the premiere publisher of Snuff Comics…

  6. Eric Says:

True, Bill Nolan. I can’t think of a worse cross over than Superman and Batman doing fatalities. It would be cool if they did it with some indie characters, like Spawn and Hellboy and Savage Dragon though.

  7. Ian Says:

I promise you right now that this is never going to happen. Unless they go more with the movies or the short lived cartoon, it just isn’t a combination DC would agree to. If you can’t have a Vertigo book with Superman, you’re not going to see him in Mortal Kombat.

Then again… Jesse Custer in Mortal Kombat might be cool.

If anything I bet this is some sort of partnership where DC creators make some new MK characters or DC publishes a toned down MK comic or something.

  8. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

    Doomsday vs Goro
    Bane vs Liu Kang
    Black Lightning vs Raiden
    Lobo vs…well, anybody

it’ll never happen, but it’d be pretty cool for like five minutes.

  9. Anun Says:

IIRC, not all of the fatalities were actually spine-rippers. Radon had some disco-dancing. Johnny Cage gave you an autographed photo. I suppose that’s not why most people play MK, but you don’t HAVE to rip out their spines, ya know.

Personally, I think they should just have a theme-song face-off.

  10. The Ugly American Says:

Well, they could have Dr. Light’s finishing move….

    DR. LIGHT WINS… RAPE-ALITY!

  11. Mek Says:

Hey, with all the brutal killing DC’s done in their comics these days, it’s a match made in Heaven!

  12. Kevin Huxford Says:

    I’d rent it. :)

  13. DaVeO Says:

It could just be the MK team making an arena style game for DC characters. Mongo anyone?

  14. John Says:

At first my reaction to it was, what the? But now that I think about it, if it’s done the right way, then this can turn out to be one awesome video game and even an arcade game for that matter. I could just see it now, Superman teaming up with Liu Kang and they must stop the likes of Lex Luthor and Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn and all the other big baddies. JLA teaming up with all the good guys of Mortal Kombat going against all the bad guys from DC Univers and Mortal Kombat, either way it should be awesome.

  15. Jake W Says:

Better idea: Mortal Kombat vs Wildstorm

  16. Bully Says:

    Mortal Kombat Loves Spider-Man

  17. Paul C Says:

It would be funny to beat up Superman so I could FINISH HIM!!! with a fatality, perhaps making him nice and TOASTY!!!

(Sorry, really, really couldn’t help myself!)

  18. Brian Says:

    BURN!!!!!!

  19. ubershep Says:

A villian fighting game would be sweet.

  20. BReal Says:

You can only use finishing moves on JLI characters.

  21. Jack Spicer Says:

Instead of characters, how about comics creators and editors from various publishers battling it out?

  22. Jason "CodeGuy" Bryant Says:

This sounded like a really stupid idea until someone mentioned Lobo. Then I thought about Superboy Prime punching someone’s head off in Infinite Crisis. So okay, that’s two characters from DC who would fit perfectly into a Mortal Kombat game. And I suppose Doomsday. If they could find a few others that fit and were reasonably well know, then it might work.

  23. Acroyear Says:

Will one of the fatalities allow me to stuff my opponent into a refrigerator?

  24. Mega Gear X Says:

Wonder Woman would rule in this game…give her a neck snap fatality…so would Lady Shiva, Bronze Tiger and Richard Dragon. Deathstroke too…

  25. Ironhorse Says:

You want an idea for a really cool game? Marvel Zombies Vs. Mortal Kombat. That would be great. Peace.

  26. Michael Says:

Marvel vs. DC vs. Capcom vs. SNK in the style of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 would pretty much be the best game ever. My face would melt as soon as I opened the packaging, with a blast of ultra-fanboy radiation coming from the disc.

  27. NeroMan Says:

I give this my strong thumbs-down.
Mortal Kombat is a once-hot license that still is surviving on pure momentum.

It’s Spawn, it’s Carnage, it’s the 90’s enthusiasm for guts and gore that Kingdom Come taught us would inevitably lead to disaster and embarrassment.

I’m not saying it couldn’t work as a game, DC has plenty of characters who could work with the MK ideology that this post has already mentioned. Lobo, Spectre, the current Crimson Avenger. Even Batman could go toe to toe against Scorpion, (and maybe Scorp’s dead-status allows Batman to ignore his own “no kill” rule.

Of course, if I get a Big Trouble In Little Gotham comic out of this, I am ALL FOR IT. Because Batman’s an ordinary guy whose seen some very extraordinary things. INDEED!

  28. Chris Says:

    Black Adam!

  29. NeroMan Says:

Since it’s Mortal Combat, wouldn’t that be Blakk Adam?

  30. taiki Says:

I’m sorry, but as a Capcom and SNK fan, if a fighter can’t stand on it’s own two feet WITHOUT fatalities, then it’s not a fun game to play. Samurai Spirits REI/Samurai Shodown 5 had no fatalities and it was still a fairly solid title(They put them back in in REI/5 Special, but with out them, the game still stands on it’s own feet).

  31. MS Says:

its true. i think there just running out of ideas. especialy since they killed them off in armagedon. but i ran into someone that works at midway and he said their doing it. he’s not working on it but they are doing it for sure. its going to be vs dc. capcom turned them down and said no.

As if!!! These games don’t hold a candle to Mortal Kombat. Mortal Kombat has found ways to evolve, over the years, adding a weapon system, mid air combat, RPG elements, create a fighter, and so on, where as these games have stayed right inside thier own little box. Now, as a long time comic reader, this sounds stupid, at first glance, but if the “right” DC characters were used, this might be ok. Lobo, Death Stroke, Sandman, Spectre, and a few others could fit in, and be cool. Most of the mainstay characters, of the DC universe, are bad choices, however

  34. Habibi Says:

Are you guys kidding me? MK vs. DC?

That sounds veryyyyyyyyyyyyy silly!!! I can understand Midway vs. Capcom (Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter) but other then that, don’t bother!

I mean first of all if you have Superman in there, that would be retarded becuz you cant even hit him and hurt him becuz hes made of steel… duhhhhhhhh, and forget even doing a Fatality on him, it would be impossible…. unless, he was stripped of his powers in some way… LOL…. Never gonna happen…lol

Now Scorpion vs. Ryu or Subzero vs. Ken would be a dream match up!!!

I LOVE MORTAL KOMBAT! And the Midway universe will always be STRONGER, FASTER and more UNIQUE then any other universe out there! LONG LIVE MK!

    :>

  35. Scorpion Says:

This would never happen in a game like mortal kombat. Just thinking of it makes me laugh!
What’s next? What about the “man in blue spandex with red underwear on top”? What’s his fatality?

  36. ItCouldBeAnyone Says:

Why not have Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter instead?

  37. Coffee Says:

The game won’t have fatalities…so all you people who thinks its going to be cool to see Superman melt somebody or whatever isn’t gonna be in the game…

As the last person stated…why not have MK vs SF…well unofficially it rocks…(mugen) and officially…it would actually be decent.
Hell..its a crossover being imagined for years now…they were rival fighters.

    This crossover(MK vs DC)…is by far…the most non-sensical one ever. I mean…wtf?

  38. Joreal Says:

This can’t happen. Based solely on the fact that Jesse Custer won’t be able to get Scorpion to anally violate himself with his own weapons, I can tell you that this isn’t going to sell well. A good heaping portion of major reasons to buy MK games are the fatalities, and if Genesis can’t get his utter and total domination over anyone that can understand English on… yeah. Not gonna happen.

To anyone wondering what JC would be able to do without the assistance of the Word of God… go look up his fight against Jody where he had his arm broken and won, then look at him holding his own with Cassidy, vampiric strength notwithstanding.

Then again, this would have a VERY directed audience, as many MK fanatics might get put off on the comic book crossover idea. I’d give it a lookover if they rethought the fatalities. As I said before, Custer would be gold, and throwing him against someone like Lobo or Spider Jerusalem (Did someone say “bowel disruptor”?) would be beautiful in itself.

    …Starr Lives.

really good game i love it
