Spectacular Spider-Man line-up

Pop culture site ENI talks to Victor Cook about the upcoming Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon … and even though season one hasn’t aired yet, apparently they’ve gotten the green light for more episodes:

ENI: Will we see guest stars from the Marvel Universe, such as the Avengers, Fantastic Four, or the X-Men? Will the Punisher make an appearance?

Victor: Not in episodes 1-13. But we just found out we are doing episodes 14-26. This show could go on for many seasons, so we’ll have to see how things progress.

Cheeks’s character designs are pretty slick!

  2. The Ugly American Says:

Parker is not geeky enough. Or rather, at all.

  3. Jason "CodeGuy" Bryant Says:

What does a geek even look like these days? The sweater vest that Ditko drew Parker in isn’t worn anymore, and I’m not sure what the modern equivalent would be. People wear contacts so much that glasses are a deliberate choice more often than geeky accessory. And Peter stopped wearing the glasses in the comics pretty quickly anyway, so it’s almost not worth it to give them to him.

I’m not sure how I’d draw a modern teenager so that he looks geeky.

Peter’s look for this series is more of a Steve Jobs geek style. Somewhat trendy but inexpensive- wash and wear without ironing. It’s the sort of style that’s worked well in Ultimate Spidey and in McKeever’s MJ series.

  5. Ian Astheimer Says:

The series takes place post-spider bite, so Peter’s more relaxed look might reflect the confidence boost he got from being empowered.

In any case, those character designs are phenomenal. I can’t wait for this show to start. Should be a blast.

This just in from the Department of Petty Complaints:

…I still don’t like the mask. One spoke down the middle of the face to the jawline? It weakens Spidey’s face.

That said, the rest of the webs are a bit funky, as well. A bit low-density. I suppose simplicity is important.

The rest of the designs are pretty good, mind. Mary Jane carries a heavy Romita influence. Harry has the trademark Osborn hair, just like Nicolas Sarkozy, Steve Van Buren and Sid James! (although: Hammer pants? Really?)

Peter looks alright, I think. See how his head is square, compared to Spider-Man’s more rounded bonce? Classic Spidey.

I think the “acting” will make up for any percieved simplicity of the design. Plus, remember that this Peter has been Spider-Man for a while. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a Poindextrous flashback in the offing.

Not sure I like the bionic arm on Curt, though. Have to see that in action, first.

…oh crap. I’ve just talked myself into watching it.

  8. Paul Salvi Says:

How can you even see that? I need either a new monitor or new glasses (can’t get non-geeky contacts, astigmatism or somesuch).

  9. Paul Salvi Says:

Never mind, I just found the high-rez versions. Peter’s beauty mark is peculiar.

  10. Adam Hoffman Says:

I like the nerdier version of Gwen we’ve got here.
