George Miller to direct Justice League movie

Thursday September 20, 2007, 9:43 pm

Warner Bros. has confirmed that George Miller will direct the big-screen adaptation of Justice League of America.

Variety reports the movie is a priority for the studio, which is rushing the project into production before a potential talent strike effectively shuts down Hollywood next summer. To make matters more complicated, Warner Bros. has to juggle its other superhero projects.

According to the trade paper, the next installment of the Superman franchise “has taken a backseat to Justice League in part because Warners is so keen on the Justice League script by Kieran and Michele Mulroney.” That would seem to answer the question that’s been dogging the planned sequel to last year’s Superman Returns.

Despite earlier rumors that Justice League would be made primarily with motion capture, it looks as if it’ll be a special effects-driven live-action film.

In addition to the Caped Crusader and the Man of Steel, Variety says Justice League likely will feature at least Aquaman, Wonder Woman and The Flash. It’s being viewed as a launch pad for movies starring the latter two.

Miller, who most recently helmed the hit Happy Feet, also directed the Mad Max franchise.

  5. Without Bale as Batman is there really any point?

  6. I can’t help thinking this is a bad idea. Without Bats and Supes it won’t be the same, and without Bale and Routh in those roles, it’ll feel second best; and I think it might prejudice future films of Wonder Woman, Flash, etc.

I’d rather they waited till the Bats & Supes movies played out their arcs, then rebooted the whole lot and - a bit like Marvel are doing - created a DC movie universe.

  7. You could have Bale as Batman, but only as a cameo. the line: ‘I don’t work well with other people.’

  8. I think if you’re ever going to do a JLA movie, you just have to forge ahead with it regardless of what’s going on with Superman and Batman. There’s unlikely to ever be a good breaking point with those two.

And, rushed? They have at least 4 months of pre-production time and over a year of post-production time if the rumored time frame, shooting starts in February, is accurate. Plenty of gigantic blockbusters get made in less time than that.

I’m eager for someone to actually do a script review though.

  9. Yeah, need some Aaron Eckhart as GL going on. And please don’t all “reimagine” it!

  10. Wait, who said that Bale and Routh won’t be in it? I thought that was the point to have the right actors. Wasn’t there there something about a Superman/Batman movie in their contracts?

  11. This seems like a way to potentially sink all these fanchises. If it succeeds, it launches all these other films. If it fails, there will be no follow ups.

  12. Their rushing the movie to fast. DC first needs to make movies of other heros like Flash, Green Lantern, and Wonder Women.

  14. Is it really imperative to have Christian Bale and Brandon Routh? Are we really suggesting that no one on earth could play these roles as well as these two? C’mon! Bale’s Batman isn’t a “Justice League” Batman. I get Bale’s reasoning completely. He and Chris Nolan are doing something that a JLA Batman wouldn’t fit in. Bale’s Batman needs to be in the forefront if he’s on the screen. If Bale’s Batman were in this, it would be like seeing a Frank Miller Batman in a Jim Lee JLA story. Routh’s Superman is far too sensitive and baby-faced to be the leader of the League. Let’s go ahead and re-cast them.

I’d also be happy if the movie were a live-action, big screen, Giffen/DeMatteis-style story. I can’t get the idea of Jason Bateman and Will Arnett as Blue Beetle and Booster Gold respectively out of my head. And Vince Vaughn as Guy Gardner.

    Maybe it’s just me.

  15. neither sups or bats were original league members.

the movie must have ww, flash, gl, mm, and aquaman. atom and ga if they wanted to get seven in the mix.

villain? darkseid would be good, but there’s no way they’ll have the comic origin. if anything, he’d be a lone guy looking for the anti-life eq. my guess would be despero, starro or white martians. just my two cents

I think this a great idea…but not until after “The Dark Knight” and “The Man of Steel” are finished and released. 2010, dammit…God, I hate Hollywood, sometimes.

  24. I’d prefer to have the White Martians in the first, esp if they want to keep J’onn in. Adapt “JLA: Mid-Summer’s Nightmare”. or have Lex, Ra’s and Dr Psycho (Peter Dinklage!) team up to take on Trinity, rest get pulled in.

WW, GL, Flash are MUST haves, Aquaman and MM can be secondary, esp MM if Sup is lead. GA, BC and Atom are plusses. (BG/BB save for sequel!)

I would MUCH prefer Welling as Sup, over Routh. By the time this gets rolling, SMALLVILLE will be over. there’s a snowball’s chance of s8, so move Tom into the big screen in tights.

    other casting?
Flash - Ryan Reynolds still seems top contender for Barry.
GL: Hal - I’m thinking Boreanaz. Is BONES still on?
WW - blanking her name, but newer actress with that touch of Greece will do.

Aquaman - hell, just get SV’s Ollie if the WB liked him so much for Mercy Reef. emphatic “NO!” to AC the surf-boi!
GA - might be worth it if no AC, keep SV actor.
MM - Tony Todd? who’s JJ on SV?
BC - Ali Larter, maybe Hayden P.

    sequels:
Booster & Beetle - for some inane reason, Dawson and newly slimmed Josh Jackson come to mind?
Fire & Ice - unknown Swedish and Dania Ramiriez (X3, HEROES)

  25. “lame lame lame, way to go yet *again* Didio…”

How is any of this DiDio’s fault? He doesn’t haver any control over whatthe parent compnay (Warner’s) does with the characters.

  26. It sounds pretty exciting. Thank heavens Brandon Routh probably won’t be in it- he was awful. It’d be a shame if it didn’t have Christian Bale, but Batman keeps his cowl on when he’s with the Justice League anyway, so who’d even know?

I don’t think the other members need to appear in solo movies first. The Justice League animated series worked just great without introducing most of the characters in solo adventures first.

As for those who think the studio should take it’s time- just remember that they took their time with Superman Returns, and looked how well that didn’t turn out. Anyway, on a big budget film, more time often just means more studio interference.

  28. Why are people saying its a movie without superman and batman? It has been repeatedely noted that the man of steel and caped crusader are both in it, unless those are the new nicknames for other characters? THEY ARE IN THE MOVIE! Routh and Bale aren’t and shouldn’t be. I love how people are acting like this is the ultimate evil being perpetrated on Earth. Why not wait until the movie comes out and guess what, if you want to not see it then your allowed. But guess what, for all the complaining out there, there are alot of people that are excited about this. if your not, thats totally cool, your allowed to be but why not save the negativity for when it is warranted. The next thing you know they’ll announe that the superman costume has a slightly different hue of red…oh my god!!! not a different shade of red, how dare you Didio, how dare you DC, you have ruined them forever….bwahhahahahaha. If you don’t want to see the movie don’t, your allowed, but at least wait until they make it before you start complaining.

  29. Strange how rumors persist about Welling being courted to play Superman. Sure, he’d do a good job. But it would wreck havoc with plans for this season of Smallville. Yeah, they could probably write Clark out of the show for a little bit and let Supergirl take up the slack, but I can’t imagine the producers would be too thrilled with the prospect.

    Comment by Goodman — September 21, 2007 @ 11:03 am

  30. KoozyK, what are you talking about Superman and Batman weren’t original members? When the team was founded in the Brave and the Bold, it was Superman, Batman, WonderWoman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter. My only hope is that they stay true to the comic looks of today and don’t try and do something radically different like Smallville did….yuck.

  31. I completely agree with everyone who said we need a JLI movie. I’d settle for a direct-to-DVD animated movie, as long as it’s done right.

    Comment by Hiratsu — September 21, 2007 @ 11:08 am

  32. #30- I will point out, just to be a pedant, that for the first few issues Batman and Superman were technically members, but they were always saying “Wait, I have to do something else! I hope the rest of the JLA can handle things.” Fear of overexposure or something like that, though that changed pretty quickly.

    Comment by B|ackPanther — September 21, 2007 @ 11:38 am

  35. >I would like Darksied, but this is still a bad idea.

Why is it a bad idea? The animated series worked out quite well, and I bet they had a lot less time to work on the script for THAT than will be spent on the script for this movie.

    Comment by Goodman — September 21, 2007 @ 11:47 am

  36. I agree with those who say no need for Bale & Routh in this movie. Neither one would probably fit in this cast & story anyway. Especially Routh’s Superman. I also agree that there are others out there who can play Supes & Bats just fine. I’d love to see Welling as Superman but don’t think it will happen. He probably wouldn’t want to be typecast & he may be a little too young for the JLA Superman. I think GA needs to be included in the cast. Especially, if they ever plan on doing the SuperMax movie I’ve read about. The Smallville guy would do for GA but he’d need to grow the goatee. GL is also a must in my book, and I also think Boreanaz could be a good GL. I like the idea of Vaughn as Gardner as well. I like Ryan Renolds as a Wally West Flash. If they go with Barry Allen then maybe Matt Damon??. After the Bourne series I can see him doing well as a superhero, maybe even as GA. Also agree that Dido isn’t to blame if movie tanks, & people need to learn how to read since it is clear that Batman/Superman WILL be in the movie. Oh, and people need to stop being so fricken negative all the time on these forums. Lighten up people. It’s a movie. There are planty of other things in the world to get worked up over.

    Comment by Katman — September 21, 2007 @ 11:54 am

  39. This doesn’t really excite me, because, in my opinion, most superhero movies are garbage, such as the craptacular Superman Returns. I’m probably one of the biggest Hal Jordan fans in the world, but I really don’t want them to make a Green Lantern movie, cause more than likley, its gonna be awful. Besides, even if they put GL in this, it would be John Stewart, cause they’d be trying to tap into the Justice League cartoon crowd, not trying to appease the people who have kept coming back to read these characters for decades.

    Comment by Nathan M — September 21, 2007 @ 12:31 pm

  40. I think they could probably try something like Kreuger and Ross’ Justice.

There’s no doubt but that they’re going to have a hard time doing Justice league. To introduce the characters, do them justice and tell a decent story in under two hours is nigh on impossible.

Even in the X-men movies, which were pretty decent, some key characters just got pushed to the side, and that was with characters whose origins needed no explanation. If I were writing this, I think I’d have to assume that the public knew who the likes of Superman and Batman were, and introduce the rest of the cast through the eyes of Batman a la the JLA animated series. I’d start the movie in Arkham as well, try and set the tone by getting the viewer to accept the existence of the rather wacky villians. Alternatively, you could just bring in random alien menace number 5.

One things for certain, this will be the most comic-like of all the comic-book movies ever made.

    Comment by NIall — September 21, 2007 @ 12:50 pm

  41. Thank god Green Lantern (Hal) isn’t going to be in this movie. I wouldn’t want to see him mixed in with this failure of a movie.

If you fast-track something this big and this important to comic fans everywhere, it has ‘DISASTER’ written all over it. DC shouldn’t focus so much on getting it out before Marvel’s Avengers movie, and go the route of the turtle; Slow and steady wins the race.

    Comment by Cameron H — September 21, 2007 @ 1:44 pm

  42. I completely agree with you, Nathan M. I don’t get the fan boys who bescumber themselves over these movies when they’re almost always bad.

    Comment by Neil Q. Yorris — September 21, 2007 @ 1:52 pm

  43. I got it! The story they should do is Grant Morrison’s “Rock of Ages” (JLA vol. 3). You’d have the JLA, the Injustice Gang, time travel, Wonderworld, and de-powered Leaguers dying but defeating Darkseid on Apokolips. The scene on the satellite with Plastic Man impersonating the Joker would be worth the price of admission all by itself! They could do all that in 2 hours on a reasonable budget and mainstream audiences would eat it up, right? I said, right?? ;-)

    Comment by Perry Beider — September 21, 2007 @ 1:53 pm

  44. Between people being happy that Green Lantern’s not going to be in this (which was never said in the article it said that it “likely will feature at least Aquaman, Wonder Woman and The Flash.” That ain’t exactly written in stone.) and people saying that Tom Welling should be Superman, my head’s a little dizzy. I think I need a drink.

I don’t really think David Boreanez would play Hal in a live action JLA. I just can’t see it. Hal’s the character that would get the most screen time right behind the trinity, but I don’t see Hal in the movie anyway. If you’re going to use a GL, it’s to be Kyle, Guy, or John. Think about Paul Rudd as Kyle, Vince Vaughn (again) as Guy, or Taye (sp?) Diggs as John.

My less-than-stellar response to Routh Superman being in this is about equal to Tom Welling being in it. Welling is too… He’s Clark. He is human and sensitive and sweet. This movie needs a big, tall, shiny building of a man to be Superman.

Oh, and Phil Morris plays Martian Manhunter on Smallville. He could be a big screen J’onn if he’s willing to be bald and green for the majority of the flick.

    Comment by mostlyhuman — September 21, 2007 @ 2:04 pm

  45. I’m excited about this. If the use the classic line-up that means only a cameo by Batman and Superman anyway. Aquaman, The Flash, Green Lantrern, Martian Manhunter, and Wonder Woman. That would rock. I guess the villain would have to be an alien. I guess Darkseid would make sense. I don’t need to see a Flash movie for it to make sense that he’s in the League.

    Comment by AirDave817 — September 21, 2007 @ 2:06 pm

  46. The original members of the JLA were GL, Flash, Aquaman, Wonder Woman/Black Canary (depending on which origin you read), and Martian Manhunter. Superman and Batman are necessary also, but if you use this lineup, it’s seven characters, and that’s a generally standard league size.

Martian Manhunter needs to be there and I will be gravely disappointed if he’s absent. They’ve talked about everyone EXCEPT him. He’s the heart of the league, as far as I’m concerned, and Brad Meltzer was the first writer to ever put up a league without him. that’s right, Mr. Jonzz has been in every incarnation of the JLA except the most recent. That cannot be said about any other individual character. Martian Manhunter is ALWAYS there.
    Without… Blasphemy, indeed.

I would also be thrilled with a JLI-style movie, as Blue Beetle and Booster are two of my favorite characters.

I just hope they have a fantastic casting director and empathetic actors who love their character-roles. As long as can grab that, I think everything will be fine.

  52. Superman and Batman will be in the movie. Bale has already stated he won’t take part of it. I think Routh did as well, either that or it was decided to get someone else. WB went through great pains to reboot both Batman and Superman and produced good movies with Batman Begins and Superman Returns and they have people looking forward to the sequels. The concern that the actors, directors and others involved with those movies is that if Justice League turns out to be a bad movie, how does that reflect on the individual hero movies? Wonder Woman has been in development hell forever. If she’s in JL and JL turns out to be a stinker, we’ll never get a Wonder Woman movie. Same for the Flash, same for any of the other heroes that appear in the film. Also, in the Batman and Superman franchises, they went through the trouble of developing the characters so what if this JL film plays them differently, even slightly?

    Comment by Yeldarb — September 21, 2007 @ 7:41 pm

  53. I can’t believe all the clamor for having Martian Manhunter in this movie. You guys do realize that they want people to see this movie right? No one outside of comic book fans knows who MM is and there is no way that Warner Bros. is putting out a big budget movie like this with a character with such a ridiculous name. I think you have to remember that WB wants more than just comic book fans to see this movie. If you don’t enjoy the line-up or the actors that end up getting cast, go back to your comics and ignore the movie.

    Comment by Kirby — September 21, 2007 @ 9:06 pm

  55. I definitely am looking forward to the movie. The writer should read the current JLA comic book and issues written by former JLA writers Brad Meltzer and Grant Morrison and watch the animated series.

I definitely would love to see the Main 7 including Black Lightning,Vixen, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Captain Marvel, Elongated Man, Plastic Man, The Atom, and Mr. Miracle.

    Comment by Gregory — September 21, 2007 @ 10:31 pm

  56. I would like to see John Stewart on the team, and think it likely that he will be in it. (Come on–it’s a Hollywood law that every movie has to have at least one black character, and Cyborg would be too hard to translate into film.) GL would make a better movie than the Flash, I think, but for the movie they’d probably want to use a white guy. Maybe they could kill the black guy off and give Hal his ring…? Or is that too racist and evil to contemplate…?

Aquaman, I could take or leave, but I guess the producers all remember him from the Super-Friends. Martian Manhunter? I really doubt they’d include him–he’s not well-known, and would come across as cheesy. Unless they could make him black.

Hawkgirl might get wedged in, in order to have more women. They could make her Mexican or something if they wanted.

I wonder how they feel about Robin. He hasn’t appeared in the current run of Batman movies yet, but everybody’s heard of him. Maybe they could go the Bruce Lee route and make him a Chinese kung-fu artist this time…? (Jackie Chan, call your office!)

Captain Marvel is also well-known, but his costume looks too much like the Flash, and his powers duplicate Superman’s. Plus I think they sold the rights already… Too bad Mr. T. couldn’t play him. (And Gary Coleman could be Billy Batson.)

You know who should be in this? The Atom! He would look cool, and his powers need little explanation.

Is there hope for Zan, Jayna, Wendy, Marvin, Wonder Dog, or Space Monkey Gleek? Surely not, but maybe in some of the tie-ins…?

  57. Routh was horrible. I hope he never plays Superman again. Please keep him far away from this Justice League movie and cast a really great Superman !

  58. I say keep it simple.

Superman, Batman, Flash, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern. (Hold back on Aquaman for the sequel)

They would have to face global level threats. I think Despero would be cool, if not Darkseid. I doubt Starro would translate to an impressive threat onscreen. (WE know what he can REALLY do but visually, he’s a still giant starfish…)

An alien invasion led by Despero would be cool. Let’s face it, most every Justice League origin has had an invasion angle. Well, save for the JLI years. In the Silver Age, it was the Appelaxians, when Grant Morrison revamped them, White Martians. And this was again done in the JL Cartoon.

  59. “rushed” - not as bad as it sounds. They want to get all the talent signed up BEFORE the strike. Once the strike happnens, they won’t be able to sign anybody. The talent that have signed up are still bound to work on the film, regardless of how long the production, or strike, is.

  62. BlastOFF — BS! Kids and teens familiar with the DCAU from Kids WB and Cartoon Network sure as crap know who MM is, and they will also expect GL to be John Stewart (I’ve witnessed the confusion about Hal or Kyle on message boards for casual cartoon watchers). These kids and teens aren’t necessarily your classic comics fanboy, or comics readers at all.

  63. This is one of the worst Ideas ever. WB is going to f**k this movie up so bad. Bale is the only man who has ever given a good represintation of the Bat on screen and it will probably stay that way. Dont put Batman in this movie!!!!!!!

  64. If you think that there will be big name celebrity’s, think again. All of the actors will be little known, or unknown. With this film with this many characters, they can’t afford to cast known actors that command a big pay check. The special effects are going to rule this film. I am hoping that Nadia Bjorlin will be cast as Wonder Woman. She is little known, and she will not cost them alot of money. Go check her out on her website. Nadia Bjorlin.com. If you can’t picture her as Wonder Woman then you are blind. Remeber the her name Nadia Bjorlin.

  65. GL has to John Stewart and has to be played by Corey Reynolds. He did an interview a few months ago, talking about how much he liked the character that his enthusiasm alone made me realize the importance of Stewart in the DCU. And if you know him from his work on TNT’s “The Closer,” you know the man can act!

  66. I think they should go for an older, Kingdom Come type of Superman. (Maybe Clint Eastwood is enough of a fan to forego his usual paycheck…?) The same approach would work well for Batman as well (Adam West reprising his old role?). The others could be younger.

  68. They should have Brandon Routh be Superman at least, even if they don’t get Bale as Batman..

  69. WB doesn’t need to look around for an actor as Superman. Get Tom Welling! He’s ready, most viewers already emphetized him as Kal-El and he deserves to don the cape after 8 years. While you’re doing it if Lex Luthor is in the script get Michael Rosenbaum too. He’s by far the best Lex ever on screen.

  70. I’d hate to see Wonder Woman being the only female in the cast—we need Black Canary too!

  71. It’s just about official. Jessica Biel is going to get the part of Wonder Woman. So with all the years of casting rumors, she is the one. Good Luck.

  72. well am pretty excited by this. Agree that Supes and Bats should be there but taking backseat to showcase the others. Though I like J’onn - I don’t see Martian Manhunter as totally essential IIRC he was not in the JLA from around #75 - 228 - i.e almost all of the 70’s and until 1984 - and never featured in Super Friends. He is alot more popular (in comics) now thanks to Giffen, Dematteis and Morrison and JLU.

  73. yes i also hope to see more female characters besides Diana even if it’s in a supporting role or amongst the villains. Zatanna, Donna Troy, Lana Lang, Cheetah/Circe, Star Sapphire, Mera perhaps?

  74. George Miller must be on drugs or something. Iam reading that an Aussie actress got the part in the JLA movie. Teressa Palmer. She has blond hair and is not that attractive. Nadia Bjorlin blows her away. What is it with Hollywood.Putting people in this roles who are misscast. It’s like casting Loni Anderson back in 1976 to play Wonder Woman. It makes no sence.Joel Silver is an Idiot……
