Creator profile: Periscope Studio

Oregon’s Portland Tribune spotlights Periscope Studio (née Mercury Studio), home to some 20 creators, including Matthew Clark, Colleen Coover, Terry Dodson, Kieron Dwyer, David Hahn, Jesse Hamm, Karl Kesel, Steve Lieber, Jeff Parker, Rick Remender and Pete Woods:

Comics people take pride in their geeky image, but in this office the accent is on comedy — the atmosphere is supportive and livelier than a comics chat room. This is a safe place to be a character as well as draw one.

Another of the originals, David Hahn, 40, says the banter keeps his wits sharp while he’s working on titles such as Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane.

“In the morning people come in and the insults start to fly, you can’t bring your C material. But it calms down after lunch and the headphones go on and people get to work,” Hahn says.

And they do work hard.

“If a spouse is out of town, people say, ‘Great, I can work more,’ ” Hahn says. Lieber claims he’s worked seven days a week for years.
