ABC Family options The Middleman for pilot

ABC Family is greenlighting a one-hour pilot based on The Middleman, the Viper Comics series by Javier Grillo-Marxuach and Les McClaine.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the cable channel has closed a deal with Grillo-Marxuach to executive produce the pilot. A formal order is pending, subject to a budget agreement.

The Middleman centers on Wendy Watson, a struggling young artist who’s recruited by a secret agency to fight evil.

On the new Middleblog, Grillo-Marxuach makes the announcement, and gives a little background for the concept, which, strangely enough, started life as a TV pitch before being turned into a comic book.

Grillo-Marxuach is a co-executive producer of Medium, and has written for such shows as Jake 2.0, Boomtown and Lost. He’s also written Annihilation: Super-Skrull and Annihilation: Conquest-Wraith for Marvel Comics, and Cylon Apocalypse for Dynamite Entertainment.

What a hoot! The books are fun! But – ABC Family? Yikes, they’ll have to tone down some of the violence and such.

ABC Family has moved away from the “wholesome” content with shows like Fallen, Falcon Beach, etc.

The two Middle Man trades were almost the best things I read last year (especially the first one). I liked how he was never condescending to her (names escape me). Made for nice chemistry.

Natalie Morales will be playing Wendy and Im so psyched about that, I’ve seen her in many plays and on an epsiode CSI-Miami…she was great!
