Coover: Creepy, apparently. Even though no-one can say why.

In all my years of making cheap jokes about Millarworld, I don’t think I’ve ever felt as sad and confused by a thread as this one:

On perceptions: Is this cute… or creepy? …This [a one page short by Jeff Parker and Colleen Coover about Marvel Girl saving a family of ducks, a scan of which is posted in the thread] was one of the short stories in the recent X-Men First Class Special, by Colleen Coover. Now, go vote first and then come back for the SPOILER text.

The spoiler text, a quote from the Wikipedia entry on Coover, reads “Colleen Coover (born Iowa, 1969[1])is a comic book artist, based in Portland, Oregon, best known as creator of the lesbian-themed erotic comic book Small Favors from Eros Comix”. The original poster then returns to ask

Now, would you say your perception changed after learning that tidbit? Maybe it merely cemented it?

Thankfully, the rest of Millarworld takes the question as seriously as it deserves:

“The authors other work doesn’t change my mind about this one.”

“I thought it was cute and that ‘factoid’ doesn’t change anything.”

“It’s more dumb than creepy. In fact, it’s not creepy at all. Just dumb. I don’t get the author thing.”

“I…I’m not sure I understand, why does the fact that the artist makes that other comic make it creepy?”

Bruno Batista, the original poster, offers an attempt at explanation:

“I ask because at the time i was talking to someone else who said that the comic itself was a bit creepy, and later when i told that person that Colleen had done erotic comics the answer i got was ‘that makes it even creepier!’”

You wouldn’t know that someone else he’s talking about; they live in Canada. But still, WTF, as the kids say?

  1. Niels van Eekelen Says:

I guess that would make Watchmen and everything Alan Moore has done creepy too, now that he’s written Lost Girls.
    :-S

  2. Bruno Says:

Hey, Bruno, the original poster here.

Like i said, i merely asked because someone else said it was so.
And i honestly couldn’t understand why, and when in doubt asked the fandom assembled, you know.

Glad to see people shared my pick of HELLACUTE as opposed to EWCREEPY.

  3. Phil Hester Says:

The irony is Colleen’s sexy-time comics are as equally cute and charming.

  4. Dweeze Says:

Having been a regular customer back in the days when she was working behind the counter at my LCS (hi Daydreams!), I can safely say there is nothing the least bit creepy about Colleen.

Paul T., on the other hand…

    :)

  5. Rob S. Says:

I thought it was one of the cutest things I’ve ever read. (And hank’s right about otters!)

  6. Jennifer de Guzman Says:

Oh, the Internet! Whereas once one might have just said to one’s friend, “Dude, you’re crazy. That comic about ducklings is not creepy at all. Shut up,” now you can involve a whole “fandom” in your boring conversations!

But I’m glad it happened because otherwise I wouldn’t have seen the adorable duckling comic.

  7. Colleen Coover Says:

The NEXT X-Men: First Class short from me and Parker comes out October 24– just in time for Halloween! It’s not creepy, but it is SPOOOOKY!

    *grin*
