Sequential Tart talks to Steve Ahlquist and Chris Reilly about their recent projects, including The Weirdly World of Strange Eggs:
ST: The Weirdly World of Strange Eggs is such a fun mixture of monsters and kid-friendly horror and action. How did you come up with this idea?
SA: Like all good ideas, I stole it from some kids. I was watching some preschoolers playing a game where they would curl up into balls and then ask you what they would hatch into. Being an adult I’d say something like “a chicken.” And the kid would stand up, “hatch,” and say “I’m a puppy!” Now, puppies don’t hatch from eggs, but kids don’t care. Another kid will say, “I’m a fire truck!” and I’d have to agree that fire trucks can hatch from eggs. The idea that anything can come from an egg, and that whatever comes from the egg, no matter how monstrous or unusual, is in actuality a baby, was enough to get me thinking. What do you do with a baby monster? You give it good parents, and find a place for it in the world. That becomes Kip and Kelly’s job: hatch the eggs, and assimilate the hatchlings into society somehow.
