So who remembers Joust, the 1980s video game where you flew around on a flying ostrich jousting with guys on buzzards over a pit of lava? There really wasn’t much more to it than that. Press the button to flap your wings, move the joystick to change directions and try to hit the bad guys from the top or it’s bye, bye birdie …
After the Kiss manga thing turned out to be a joke, I’m reluctant to even post about this because it sounds like it, too, is bogus, but GameDaily is reporting that Joust is heading to the big screen. And to the printed page:
The plan is to launch the new Joust franchise with a graphic novel, which is being penned by Steven Elliot Altman of DC Comics and Dark Horse Comics, and will be based on Gottlieb’s screenplay. The film has been given the fast track by CP Productions and should be wrapped by June 2008. Several A-list directors are already interested in helming this sci-fi/action project.
Yes, several A-list directors are interested in making Joust into a movie. Because the world has gone completely insane.

If by “insane” you mean “completely awesome,” then, yes, this sounds insane.
At the very least it sounds sh*tloads cooler than “Doom.”

A CG animated film I can see, but a live-action film might be out of the question… unless there’s an ostrich whisperer who can coax the big birds to fly.

I agree, this is awesome rather than insane. Aside from “Joust” being one of the greatest games ever, it’s got the advantage of having potentially cool sci-fi visuals (lava! flying ostriches! pterodactyls! teleporters! riders hatching from egg-like things! all the messed up stuff from the second game!), but the creative people can go any direction they want without having to worry about the fans complaining about it being unfaithful.
It’s brilliant, really.

Who wants to bet that Pong and Pac-Man are in the works?

Dude, wait… what?
So, what’s next? Digdug: The Motion Picture?
Awww, who am I kidding, they made a cheesy Disney ride a blockbuster hit, Hollywood can make a mint out of anything.
Ugghh.

HA! If this is true, I hope they give Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace the movie treatment next.

The Goonies II, anyone?

Proof that Hollywood is clearly out of ideas.

My favorite arcade game of all time! Though this ostrich won’t fly — the kids don’t remember this game, unless they are into downloading MAME.

I used to have a Joust 2 arcade game in my basement (up until a few years ago). Sigh…
Great game, but I don’t see how it would be a movie

Hey self-loathers!
I think this is a great idea! I saw an exhibit (8-bit or something like that) a few months ago next to the new Golden Apple on Melrose. There were a few AWESOME paintings inspired by JOUST that had to be seen to be believed. I thought to myself that this is better than anything Alex Ross has ever done (balding men notwithstanding) and could serve as the axis to so many wonderful ideas. Anyway, I’m willing to bet that the producers of this film saw the same art-pieces and are willing to share the love.
I’ll be first in line.
