The man, the myth, the Liefeld

August 22nd, 2007
Author Chris Mautner

After much hemming and hawing, Dick Hyacinth finally digs in on his “descriptive project,” a critical retrospective of Rob Liefeld’s career, starting with Hawk and Dove:

Liefeld breathes life into the Kesels’ characterization of Hawk. I’m not sure to what extent they intended to play around with notions of dualism by portraying Hawk and Hank as separate entities. Liefeld’s art, however, allows no other interpretation. Hawk runs around in tight, skimpy gym shorts and sweatsuits, making a great show of his political beliefs by ordering a burger with American cheese. Hawk blows up libraries and destroys historical artifacts with reckless abandon–enthusiasm, actually. Without Liefeld’s art, this would be farcical; with it, Hawk and Dove becomes something much more bizarre.

“Hemming and hawing?” Come on man, I’m choosing to work on this project over playing Persona 3 AND reading Pro Football Prospectus 2007.

  2. Chris Mautner Says:

Persona 3 man, no question. What other video game lets you shoot your main character in the head to summon his alter ego?

I’m having trouble figuring out what personas to merge though.

  3. Dick Hyacinth Says:

The ability to merge personas is what separates the best SMT games from the very-good-but-not-life-destroying ones. I’m not putting a whole lot of thought into what I merge, but I probably should.

As long as we’re not discussing Liefeld: Have you played BioShock yet? I generally dislike FPSs, but I don’t think I can resist this one.

  4. Chris Mautner Says:

I have a copy at home tempting me, ever tempting me, but it’s been hard to find the time to play lately. I’ve barely been able to spend any time with Persona.

Plus, fps games make me really nauseous, so I’m a little wary.

  5. Dick Hyacinth Says:

No game has ever brought me to the verge of nausea like Metroid Prime: Hunters. I think it’s the thumb strap thing.

  6. JK Parkin Says:

Is BioShock the one where you kill little girls, or whatever the controversy of the moment is in the video game world?

  7. Chris Mautner Says:

    Yep, that’s the one.

  8. FD Says:

You can choose not to kill the little girls, you know… (Sorry if that’s a spoiler.)
