Millarworld: All The Rage no longer the rage?

August 17th, 2007
Author Graeme McMillan

Whatever happened to All The Rage, asks Millarworld:

“Aside from some photos from San Diego, there has been nothing coming from ATR in weeks. Perhaps it is time for the old column to go bye-bye…”

“Well, really, it’s been done for a while now, hasn’t it?”

“I was just about to ask the same thing when I checked again to find no updates tonight. I presumed the SDCC might interfere with scheduling for a week, but it’s all been a bit half-hearted recently with gaps in ‘publishing’ explained retroactively.”

“I know a gossip column isn’t the most high class thing in the world to begin with, but there’s been something especially sleezy about ATR for a while now, i thought.”

“The fact that it wasn’t going up and no one really noticed is more telling. Can you imagine the number of posts if Lying didn’t go up one Monday? ATR used to be a fun gossip site that wasn’t afraid to print things that might not be all that true. Lately it has become yet another interview / preview site, sprinkled with the opinions of someone who doesn’t appear to be all that in the know… just another guy blogging away. I click on it when someone posts here that it is up, in hopes of hearing something interesting but far more often than not I’m disappointed.”

The thread reveals that ATR’s writer has had food poisoning and therefore not able to update, but still… Remember when there were two gossip columns worth paying attention to…?

(Cue Rich Johnston appearing to say that that’s never been the case in three… two…)

I rather like that the guy writing ATR seems to realize he can’t compete straight up with Rich at his own game so he tries something different. That’s just me though.

Lying in the Gutters hasn’t been all much fun lately either…kinda tame.

Steve’s a good guy. He’s just been trying to deal with a recent move to Canada for family reasons as well as a few other things. He wanted to move away from the rumor column stuff because it’s really kind of boring. I personally like that he’s giving indy books more exposure because that’s an untapped market and there are a lot of talented creators doing some really good books. He’s hoping to be back in the swing of things next week once he’s feeling better.

Let’s face it, since Rich has become friends with everyone in Britain that’s writing comic books, he won’t write anything that would make them unhappy, so he’s pretty much stuck writing bad stuff about John Byrne (which is always fun). Since Rich has pretty much shelved his teeth, he might as well become the “real” comics journalist that he threatened to become years ago anyway.

His comparison between writing fiction and telling blatant lies to fans this week was particularly crass. I wonder how much of his work is “fiction” anmyway since his claim to truth ratio seems to be down recently.

I enjoyed Rich’s brief foray into “serious” journalism a bit back when he was taking votes on the direction of LitG. Wouldn’t mind seeing him give it another go.

  6. Rich Johnston Says:

Jason - I think you really don’t understand my position. I’m certainly not friends with everyone in Britain that’s writing comics. Certainly no more than I ever have been.

As for teeth, have you not been reading the column of late? LOEG/Scott Dunbier/Millar/Hitch’s lies/Madsen fighting/DC’s banner/homophobic-adjacent/Bomb Wueen wank/Morrison’s last DC book/Boom background/the whole Michael Golden thing/ plus Swipe File - possibly the thing creators hate me most for, not to mention the sarkiest snarkiest San Diego reportage going…
