Byrne: Someone else thinks I’m awesome, too.

John Byrne learns humility:

Working this morning on a large-sized commission piece, which prominently features the ol’ “flying bathtub” Fantasticar. Lacking any eliptical templates large enough to handle the circular parts of the form, I knew I was going to have to lay this out freehand, and then laboriously ink in the lines using my French curve.

So, I doodled in the rough shape, then went back in with my pencil and tightened until I thought it looked right. (Luckily, drawing circles in perspective was one of the few things I brought with me out of the Alberta College of Art. Something that has served me well.) I then went on with laying out the rest of the drawing.

Penciling done, I picked up my PITT pen and my French curve, and laid the latter on the drawing, along the first line I intended to trace.

It was a perfect “fit”. So was the next line. So was the next. And the next. And the next. In fact, every line that required the French curve was a perfect fit to the French curve.

Maybe Ralph Macchio is right. Maybe I am a f**king genius!!

I love the last line of that: I’m a genius, but it’s okay, because someone else said it first!

Haha - that’s great! Next to Byrne, da Vinci looks like a dolt.

I can’t believe you put Byrne’s name in the same sentence as d*V*nc*. What disrespect!

  3. Thomas Says:

DaVinci’s early work was far superior to Byrne’s, but after Leonardo’s dismal run on 1602: Javierfolk, I’d say Byrne is doing much better these days.

At this point, I think Byrne knows exactly the reaction he’s going to get to statements like that. I think he tells stories like this partly because he enjoys seeing people go nuts over it.

Seriously? If you read the post, it’s pretty clear that John Byrne is being sarcastic. Fair is fair, right?

  6. Mike Says:

Today, Byrne added The Dark Knight to his list of movies that are forbidden to be talked about on his board.

This joins Superman Returns, any Spider-Man movie and any Fantastic Four movie as off limits. There might be more but who can keep up with his rules?

Here’s the best part; Mr. self-appointed genius was so amazed by how he drew the curves to the Fantasti-Car, he got the proportion all wrong! There’s no way all four members of the FF can fit into it. Look at the middle two seats, he drew them with no space for anyone of the same size as Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Girl to sit…..unless he intended for Ant-Man and the Wasp to join up!

    What a dope!

It ain’t a crime to love Bono.
