Damnit. One of the finest artists of our generation - and a good man, to boot.

    Damnit.

This is a sad loss for comics. He was a hell of an artist and one of the reasons I got back into comics. My sincere condolences to his family. I’ll miss you, Mike.

  3. James Harvey Says:

He was a great, great guy and drew, arguably The Spider-Man. He will be missed . . .

  4. Diana Kingston-Gabai Says:

As Kevin said, simply devastating news; this is a dark day for comics. :(

  5. Neil Carey Says:

I remember his brief Superman stint and always wished he could have stuck around way longer than he did.

Rest in Peace, all the same, though, Mr. Wieringo.

  6. Michael K. Willis Says:

It’s a terrible loss of a good man and an incredibly talented artist. I hope that his family and friends find themselves surrounded by peace and light even as undeniable grief and loss fill their beings.

  7. Jeffrey Says:

I first discovered his art when browsing the comics racks in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia. It was an issue of Fantastic Four, and had a cover of a little girl with glowing red eyes, and next to her were building blocks that spelled out “DOOM”. What a great cover. I grabbed it, and the book hooked me and never let go.

    Damn it.

  8. Jeff Says:

I can’t remember the last time I read news on the Net I so badly wanted to be a hoax. This is incredibly saddening. Wieringo was one of those guys who, no matter how much I enjoyed his work, I always thought his best was yet to come because it always seemed to be progressing. And the few posts of his I read online made him seem like an incredibly sweet and kind person.

    Terrible, terrible news.

  9. Tuckenie (Vallen C. Tucker) Says:

His art is THE reason I read comics at all… Man… this is just awful news… really awful…

  10. Joe Alexander Says:

This is an absolute shock. Whenever there is a loss it hurts, but this one has truly blown me away. As a fan, he was the best guy ever in terms of interaction, always generous with his time and I loved his p.o.v. on many topics as they often echoed my own. His work, his passion for what he did, all seemed to be reaching new heights, and his blog was great. It showed his desire to share and really be involved creatively with his fans. He was always one of my first stops at Heroes Con, and I loved talking with him. He most recently took the time to tell me where to get cat food locally (during the pet food scare). I am absolutely stunned by this.

  11. Mark Engblom Says:

Wow…what a sucker-punch. He was a neat guy with a unique style and I’ll miss having him around.

  12. Jake Saint Says:

As good as he was– and he was very good– he was only getting better. To not get to know where his talent would take his art is a terrible loss.

  13. Jamie S. Rich Says:

Wow. I saw the headline and thought, “Please let this be a bad joke, some kind of ploy to get us to read a post, a pun on a book that Mike is working on.”

I never met the man, but like probably so many people in the industry, received nice notes from him or saw nice things he said about books I was working on in various places. He worked on one of Oni’s SIDEKICKS books for practically nothing, a volunteer on the project because he was a fan. He so talented, so sweet…this really hurts.

Good luck, Mike, in whatever afterlife you chose for yourself.

  14. matteo Says:

Sad. And that’s all i am going to say.

  15. Scott William Foley Says:

I never met Mr. Wieringo, but I fell in comic book love with he and Mr. Waid during their masterful run on Flash back in high school. This news literally brought tears to my eyes. My deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and fans.

  16. Spot 1980 Says:

    Very sad news.
