Voltron heads to the big screen

And the movie news just keeps rolling out … As we saw this summer, America loves giant robot movies, so New Regency has picked up producer Mark Gordon’s Voltron: Defender of the Universe film.

Variety describes it as “a post-apocalyptic tale of survival set in New York City and Mexico.” The movie is based on the 1980s animated series, which featured five pilots who drove around in robotic lions that combined into the giant robot Voltron. I was always more of a G-Force and Starblazers guy, so I don’t really know much more about it than that.

Devil’s Due picked up the rights to publish a Voltron comic around 2002, but I don’t think they’ve published any Voltron material for at least a couple of years.

The script is being written by Justin Marks, who is also writing He-Man and the Masters of the Universe , Street Fighter and Supermax, the Green Arrow movie.

Green Arrow movie? You’re totally making that up, just pulling our collective leg.

    WHAT?

people have mentioned the green arrow movie before, mkoneil… where you been?

If they get Holly Valance to play Princess Allura, then that would be just swell.

Must’ve missed the mentions, pucknation. I’ll try to avoid that in the future (and a quick googling shows quite a bit of news on the subject).

Personally, I wouldn’t read too much into Variety’s description of the movie as taking place in a post-apocalyptic New York and Mexico. They’ve been known to go kind of wild when they try to explain what a movie is about–as far as we know, they could be talking about what some alien planets look like.

But…if the movie IS set on Earth, then it’s probably after it’s been invaded and Voltron might have to sweep in to save the day…

    Go lion!

I know I read a script review a few weeks ago which was one of the most gushing ones I’ve ever read in my life, so who knows..

…If this moron thinks that Voltron is a post apocalyptic tale set on Earth, he’s in for one NASTY hate mail campaign.

Another 1980s gem comes to film. Yet again, I hope it isn’t cheezy or cornball (Basically no Power Rangers crud), and if I were the casting directors, I’d use unknowns as the Voltron Force, and a few well-knowns as Coran, Zarkon, Haggar and Lotor. Hope the CGI is tight, too. As for the HE-MAN remake, I hope it’s less campy than the 1987 flick with Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella.

  11. Sanford S. Williams Says:

Leave STREET FIGHTER alone unless the remake is better than the Van Damme joint. It’s sad that it was Raul Julia’s last film. What a way to go out.

Post apocalyptic Mexico? Earth? Pass. What an idiot.
