At Sequential Tart, writer Gail Simone talks about taking over DC’s Wonder Woman, a series that hasn’t fared well since its recent relaunch:
The thing is, Wonder Woman doesn’t need re-invention. I strongly believe that, like Superman, she is so fantastically brilliantly conceived that she defines cool already, when her stories are told with conviction and thrust and an eye towards showcasing what makes her great rather than false attempts to make her “relatable.” Hell with “relatable.” Is Batman “relatable”? Is a Transformer? Is Godzilla? No, they are simply badass enough that the “what’s cool” line has to move to include them, rather than the other way around.
Diana’s like that … she is the world’s premiere superheroine, period. She’s the Ferrari. She’s not a spin-off, and you have to go a long drop to hit the next female action hero with her history, charm and recognition factor. I think it’s when we forget that that people lose interest.
That all said, I think we need to shine up some aspects that have been allowed to tarnish slightly. It’s not a re-invention, it’s more of an intentional placement of spotlights.
Simone’s tenure on the series kicks off in October with Issue 13.

I have followed Gail on Birds of Prey and Sinister 6. I’ve really enjoyed her writing style and what she brings to the characters.
I was excited about the WW relaunch, but it has kinda fallen flat for the most part. But I was excitede once again once I read that Gail was taking over the reigns on WW !
Issue #13 cant get here soon enough!

Did she just conpare WW’s relatablity to Godzilla. That sparks a few questions.

I’m actually looking forward to picking up Wonder Woman again (which is interesting wording now that I read over it again
) for the first time in quite a while.
Diana is the premier super-heroine, of course, and she should have stories that are worthy of her stature, power, and long legacy. Ms. Simone is a writer that I’m sure will be able to deliver the goods (I’m not a fan of the white suited secret agent thing…I’m not yet convinced that Diana even needs a “secret identity”… but I have a feeling that Gail will eventually turn me around on that and I’m looking forward to it.)

Wow, a writer who actually wants to write about Wonder Woman, not about her friends, not about her continuity, and not about their deep seated anxieties about their wife. FUN!
