Wizard World Chicago starts Thursday night with a preview night, then continues through the weekend. As always, you can check the main Newsarama site for any news coming out of the con, and we’ll be around this weekend doing that blog thing that we do.
Now let’s see what other folks will be doing …
Comic Book Legal Defense Fund:
The CBLDF will be there, hosting a star-studded Sketch Duel on Saturday afternoon from 6:30 – 7:30 in the Wizard School Room. Witness live art made before your eyes and bid to take the pieces home! Participating artists will include Matt Wagner, Whilce Portacio, Phil Hester, Tony Moore, and very special guest Michael Golden!
The Fund will also be exclusively hosting superstar writer Brian Azzarello for three signings at the CBLDF Booth (151) where he’ll also be sketching to benefit the Fund! Azzarello will appear on Friday from 12 – 1, Saturday from 11 – 12, and Sunday from 11 – 12. While you’re there be sure to check out the Fund’s great selection of signed premiums from your favorite creators!
Kevin J. Smith & Kurt Wood of Imaginary Tales Comics dropped me a note about their plans:
Imaginary Tales Comics will be at booth 4410 in Artist Alley all weekend with issues one, two, and three of our first comic, Brandon’s Little Problem, the story of a boy, his nose, and the alien invaders that’ve emerged from it. Along with those three issues, we also have a print for sale, as well as a WW – C exclusive sketch cover for issue three
Dr. Strange preview
Like they did in San Diego, Marvel will show a sneak preview of the animated Dr. Strange direct-to-DVD movie in Chicago. The DVD comes out Aug. 14. Marvel has the first five minutes of the movie up on their site , and Carla talks about the film in the latest Fifth Color.
Michael Golden will debut a limited edition print at the show:
To celebrate his first appearance at Wizard Chicago, artist Michael Golden will be unveiling a limited edition, signed and numbered print in cooperation with Harris Comics, at the premiere show this next weekend. Limited to only 100 copies, this exclusive print was previewed as a mini-poster to benefit the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund at the SDCC, but now you can upgrade to the BIG ‘UN at the big Chicago con.
And if that weren’t enough, Vanguard Productions, in anticipation for their hardcover art book “Excess: The Art of Michael Golden,” is shipping in a limited supply of the exclusive signed and numbered companion sample book, only while supplies last. This special publication features the same eye-popping Vampirella piece that graces the WCCC exclusive poster. A matched set, so to speak!
Known for his detail oriented work on “The ‘Nam,” “Micronauts,” “G.I. Joe,” “Dr. Strange, ” and “Batman” among much more, as well as being the co-creator of Rogue from the X-Men. Golden’s work can currently be seen on covers for Iron Man, Hero for Hire, and Classic Battlestar Gallactica. In fact, the new sketchbook, art book from Vanguard, and the exclusive Chicago poster are a major part of a wellspring of new material on the horizon for all those hungry Michael Golden art fans.
In edition to the limited Vampirella poster, Golden will be signing at several other venues throughout the show:
Friday: 1-2 –Heroic Fine Art
Saturday: 1-2–Wizard Booth
Saturday: 6:30-7:30–Comic Book Legal Defense Fund Charity Drawing
Sunday: 1-2–Hero Initiative Spidey 100 book signing

Our marquee event will be two signing sessions with Michael Madsen. We will have a limited convention exclusive 8” x 12” print of Michael Madsen’s project SHIFTER, featuring a special UV coated color side by the BENEATH THE VALLEY OF THE RAGE team of artist Stephen Thompson and colorist Jason Jensen; the flip-side is a glossy black and white take on the same image. Though we will ask that you purchase the $10 piece in order to get Mr. Madsen’s autograph, he will also sign a limited number of other items, including DVD inserts and autograph books, for no additional charge. Mr. Madsen will also, time permitting, pose for photographs with fans for, again, no additional charge.
We should also mention that Michael Madsen is an exclusive guest of Fangoria Comics, and will not be signing at any other booths during the event. You will not be required to obtain a ticket, attend a panel, or do a job for Nice Guy Eddie in order to get in line. Simply show up at the posted time, grab your litho, and hang out with the Fangoria Comics crew.
