You may not like his work, but you have to respect the man.

August 6th, 2007
Author Graeme McMillan

At the same time that Turner remains highly visible on top-selling comics at Marvel, DC and his own Aspen Comics, people are…afraid. No one likes to talk about bad things, and cancer is near as bad as it gets. Even some of Turner’s friends and past collaborators will ask, “Hey, is Mike doing okay? I heard he might have had a relapse. Is he all right? If you see him, please pass along my best….”

People are afraid of the unknown. They’re afraid of what the answer might be. Well, there are answers. But first, you’ll have to know what Michael Turner knows.

And believe us, he knows things. He knows things about pain you pray you’ll never know. “A broken bone? That’s not pain,” he says. Or maybe he doesn’t so much say it as half-laugh it, a nervous laugh. “You can actually get comfortable with a broken bone, just sit there so it doesn’t move. But nerve pain? It always hurts. There’s nowhere you can hide. And just try getting some sleep when that hits.”

Turner talks about his cancer, and how it’s affected his life and work, over at Wizard Universe.

I respect him for his courage in the face of adversity, and I wish him success in overcoming cancer.

But I won’t pretend that I have anything but contempt for his portrayal of women. His female characters are almost always sex object mannequin types, and they typically pose instead of doing anything. And his Supergirl stuff was gross. So was the Power Girl cover – I ended up buying that issue but ripping the cover off and throwing it in the garbage at the store next door. (I am not a giant breast fetishist.)
