According to the Merced Sun-Star, Merced College will start using foto-novellas or photo-comics to trumpet the benefits of a college education to young Latino males:
The colorful foto-novelas are free and available in both English and Spanish. They will be distributed to churches, faithbased networks, clinics and grocery stores in the Latino community, according to Virginia Madueño, owner of Imagen, the company Merced College contracted to produce the program.
Duran said one advantage to the foto-novelas is that they typically enjoy a long shelf life within families. Administrators thought of the idea after the Merced County Sheriff’s Department produced a similar publication about the dangers of methamphetamine use.
Apparently they got members of the college’s drama department to pose for the comics, which is about the best use of a college drama department I’ve ever heard of.
