Comic Bloc: Well, it’s weekly, so that’s something, right?

Someone at Comic Bloc wonders if DC’s Countdown book deserves a break:

I remember collecting 52 week by week and seeing some very negative comments from posters on message boards about it.

At the same time, 52 was becoming Book of the week in the Thursday morning quarter back column on wizard.

and if not number one, number 2, or number 3.

3 places that get big coverage and i’d imagine plenty of people read them columns.

for example, I have been reading great things about immortal iron fist so i went and bought it.

I really don’t think it’s a quality thing, because Countdown to me, in it’s first 11 issues is far more exciting and interesting and i think it is going to pay off loads.

By the way,now that 52 is done and dusted, it’s probably one of the best comics i have ever read.

and Countdown has all the right ingredients to be as great.

i wish wizard would throw countdown a bone,

Does anybody feel the same?

Okay, firstly: Anyone who thinks that Countdown is more fun than Immortal Iron Fist is someone that I just don’t understand.  Secondly, the rest of Comic Bloc doesn’t agree:

“Dude, have you been reading the magazine. Huge feature every month centered on Countdown. Typically reiterating the same tired info too. If you ask me, they’re covering it TOO MUCH.”

“I don’t think Wizard is obligated to recommend every book out there. Perhaps the staffers who put together that feature liked 52 but dislike Countdown.”

“People treat Wizard like it’s the NY Times or the AP. They’re a fan magazine, written by fans for fans. You have more chance of getting objectivity in the Lying In The Gutters gossip rag than you do there.”

Wizard’s Ben Morse appears to explain the deal:

Book of the Week is whatever comic *we* think was the best that week and thus far we’ve yet to think Countdown fits that bill. Doesn’t mean Countdown wasn’t the best book of the week, just means *we* didn’t think it was. A lot of times, we thought 52 was. Lately, we’ve though Immortal Iron Fist and Super-Villain Team-Up were. Different strokes for different folks.

Also, to clarify, the other two “mainbar” books that get longer write-ups are not actually the number two and number three books of the week respectively, they’re just two others books we felt warranted discussion and review. Sometimes that’s because we thought they were also real good, but sometimes we think they’re not so good and want to analyze why. Other times you’ll get books like All Star Batman & Robin or Buffy the Vampire Slayer that some of us love and others of us hate so we give them longer reviews to highlight the debate.

So the only “ranked” title is Book of the Week, which we felt was the best book of the week (also note that sometimes we don’t even give Book of the Week out if we don’t feel anything that week deserved it). Everything else you gotta read the individual reviews to see what we thought.

Countdown is not more fun than Iron Fist. Countdown still however tops Archie by a nose and tough bowel movements. But you knew this writer wasn’t right in head when he started off by implicitly admitting to reading Wizard and then talked as if (1) he cared what they did or said and (2) that it matters in the least what Wizard said.

I’m still reading Countdown because I like the concept of a weekly book, but I’m close to dropping it. (Amazing Spider-man may well scratch that itch quite soon.) I’m already not picking up any of the one shots or Countdown to Garbage mini-series. Countdown is actually making me drop DC titles. The Great Disaster may indeed be coming to DC and sooner than they think.

As a big-event-to-get-everyone-to-buy-more DC comics, it’s been more like Countdown to The Great Implosion of 2007.
