The New Frank Miller.

The Bendis Board have decided that it’s time to stop worshiping false idols, and time to start worshiping other false idols:

“Where as Frank Miller seems to have completely lost his way with the character, Matt [Wagner] seems to have picked up right where Year One left off. His Batman, along with the supporting cast, is spot on. These are right up there with the Engelhart/Rogers run. I hope DC keeps him on limited series like these, if only for the high quality. And personally, I think he draws one of the best Batman’s out there.”

“I agree with your assessment on Matt Wagner, and disagree with your assessment on Frank Miller. He hasn’t lost his way just because he isn’t writing the now stereotypical Batman attitude he helped popularize.”

“I have to disagree. DK2 was…well, it was the reading equivalent of bathing in dirty bath water. I haven’t gotten to the Batman & Robin thing, but by most accounts its not good.”

“Wagner nor anyone is worthy to the Miller throne except Miller himself.”

I’d take Mage vol. 1 over anything Miller’s ever done anyway.

There’s more heart in it and far less grime.

  2. Kevin Huxford Says:

Ummm…how is he NOT writing the stereotypical Batman attitude that he helped popularize? He’s doing that attitude even MORE over the top.

  3. david brothers Says:

I agree with Kevin. All-Star Batman is DKR Batman in its purest form.

  4. Tuckenie (Vallen C. Tucker) Says:

    Purest or crappiest?

  5. david brothers Says:

I like the book, so that’d be purest.

I agree. At this point he’s writing a caricature of his previous Batman work.

But yeah, Wagner’s Batman is where it’s at.

  7. RMC Says:

I loved DK2 though I don’t think of it as a “serious” work like DKR so much as just a sort of Tarnished Silver Age Justice League reunion.
But the All-Star Batman seems a little thin in character. How long is is run? (In terms of issues, not time spent, all you cards and rapier wits out there) ;¬)

  8. Roshow Says:

I think DK2 is a far more serious work of art than DKR. It’s definitely more avant garde and symbolic in nature than the straightforward DKR. But don’t confuse that for less seriousness.
