SDCC, Day 0: Wait, this is only the preview?

July 26th, 2007

We still call Preview Night “Day 0,” right? Judging from some of the early reports — including the one filed this morning by JK Parkin — we may want to change that. What’s usually described as a fairly leisurely evening has become, by most accounts, crowded and even frenzied.

And already there is plenty of coverage coming in from all quarters (NOTE: I’ll undoubtedly miss some items, so I’ll update as I find them). So let’s get started:

• I totally swiped that photo from Pat Loika‘s Comic-Con Flickr set. He’s among the contributors to the larger SDCC 2007 Flickr pool, which I’ll probably steal from throughout the week — at least until someone tells me to stop.

• At PopCultureShock, Rich Watson is a little overwhelmed by Preview Night: “For some reason, I dunno, I had picked up the impression that this was gonna be a limited gathering on account of how it wasn’t the ‘official’ start of the show. Well, if it wasn’t, you’d never know from the look of it.”

• Jevon Phillips of The Los Angeles Times files a video report from the opening of Preview Night.

• Wired.com has a slide show that touches on everything from the Marvel commemorative stamps to indie creators to NBC’s Heroes.

• The San Diego Union-Tribune files several stories, including an overview of Preview Night that delightfully describes Comic-Con as “a pop culture bouillaibaise stuffed with more ingredients than anyone can swallow,” a stroll through the convention center, and a really weird feature about superhero psychoses.

• At Variety‘s Bags and Boards, Tom McLean has photos from Preview Night.

• TV Squad checks in, only to discover not much television-related happens on Day 0.

• Blogger Bully has photos — and an exhibitor’s tag: “It is sort of the ‘Get Out of Jail Free’ card of comics conventions to have that orange exhibitor tag and breeze past the convention center’s crack security teams hours before the general public can get into the show. Resist doing your Nelson Muntz ‘Ha, ha!’ impression, however, because you’re there to work.”

Yeah, Preview Night “back in the day” (like 4 years ago or so) was a pretty limited crowd. But it’s almost like an extra day now.

Kinda depressing, because when they did the 1st Preview Night it was great to walk around the convention floor without the insane crowds. Closest I ever got to what the crowds were kinda like at my first SDCC in 2000.

FYI, I’m blogging the con from a Legion of Super-Heroes perspective at the Legion Omnicom. Even with that small niche, it’ll still end up being a lot.

I like Mark Evanier’s comment: The Single Most Heard Phrase This Evening at Comic-Con… “My God, if it’s this crowded on Preview Night…”
