With all the excitement of the looming Comic-Con International, with its usual round of project announcements and exclusive agreements, let’s not forget that new comics come out this week. Like clockwork, or something close to it.
You’d think it would be a quiet week for releases, but Wednesday will see a new issue of All-Star Batman and Robin – only two months or so after the previous issue! — more of World War Hulk and its tie-ins, at least three of Warren Ellis’ creator-owned projects, and the latest installment of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8.

(Oh, all right, one’s merely a hardcover collection, but still …) Issue 7 is a standalone issue that provides a breather between “The Last Iron Fist Story” and “The Seven Capital Cities of Heaven,” and spotlights Wu Ao-Shi, the Pirate Queen of Pinghai Bay, whom we last saw in Issue 2. That’s a good thing. Unfortunately, though, that means we’re without David Aja’s art for a month. We’ll survive, I guess. Somehow.

With this issue, Cebulski turns to Japanese ghost stories of inspiration, and brings in artist Kei Kobayashi, whose work is breathtaking.

Chris: I was going to mention this on the site this week, so thank you, Previews, for saving me the trouble of creating a separate post! These are a pair of young-adult prose novels, written by Thomas Sniegoski, most famous in comic book circles for his work with Jeff Smith on the Stupid, Stupid Rat Creatures miniseries. Eric Powell fans will want to take special note of these books, however, as the cover and interior illustrations are done by him. It looks like a pleasant enough superhero parody about a young boy who attempts to don a costume and fight crime. Your tolerance for that sort of thing should determine whether or not you should check it out.

Chris: From Checker. This collects Winsor McCay’s classic strip from 1905-1909. Obviously not printed in as large or lush a format as the recent So Many Splendid Sundays collection, but if you can’t afford that (and, really, few of us can), this should make for a good alternative.

Kevin: I can safely say that Brandon Graham’s King City, Vol. 1, from Tokyopop, is one of my favorite releases of the year. We’re talking Top Five territory. I just can’t get enough of it. Since reading it back in March, I’ve been so looking forward to his next release, Multiple Warhedz — or Warheads, depending on whom you believe — his scifi-adventure from Oni Press. And here it is! (You can glimpse some of the interiors in Graham’s DeviantArt gallery.) Pick of the week, no question.

A wealth of good stuff this week:
Grendel: Behold the Devil featuring a prologue for the new Hunter Rose based mini for this fall.
Black Summer #1 because Warren Ellis has a very high batting average with comics.
Queen & Country #32 because a new issue is always worth celebrating
Star Trek Year Four #1 I’m not a hug Star Trek fan but this mini looked to be the most interesting of IDW’s Trek properties and I really enjoyed the original in syndication as a kid.
Four solid picks not published by the Big Two. Not a bad week for comics at all.
If you are only wired for DC and/or Marvel, I’ll toss you the double Diggle of Green Arrow Year One and the new issue of Hellblazer, for Marvel the arrival of a new Iron Fist and Incredible Hulk.
