McFarlane: Spawn 2 is my “Passion of the Anti-Christ”

MTV.com has a Q&A up with Todd McFarlane about the sequel to the first Spawn movie … McFarlane says he’s working on the screenplay now:

MTV: The thing that I’ve always found cool about “Spawn” is that it’s its own type of scary. It’s not Rob Zombie’s “Halloween” or Eli Roth’s “Hostel.”

McFarlane: Right, I’d call this more of a suspense thriller. I’m going to use a big example which may seem sort of loopy, but to me it’s closer to “Jaws” in that — and this is one of the problems that some of the studios had — Spawn won’t talk. He’s just a being in this movie — which again, some people may find odd — but, you know, Jaws didn’t talk a hell of a lot in his movie either. But you knew that when he came out, something was going to happen. You know what I mean? You’ve made the presence known enough that nothing good was going to come of his presence being there.

So it’s sort of the same concept. I’m not going for Freddy Krueger horror and I’m not going for Spider-Man action superhero. I’m not even going for a guy who’s going to sit there and talk. You’re never actually ever going to see him in his cape or costume in any kind of direct light. It’s just going to be this thing that’s just going to come, and if it’s there then buddy, you’re going to have a bad day.

McFarlane says he’s going to write, produce, self-finance and direct the film.

    Spawn sucked then
    Spawn sucks now

  2. Kevin Huxford Says:

All that his quote says to me is “keeping the effects budget down, keeping the effects budget down, not paying Michael Jai White for voiceovers”.

  3. Zeitgeist Says:

How many years has this movie been in production? It seems to be an annual event that somebody dusts up McFarlane and he says the exact same thing about Spawn 2, it just doesnt seem to go anywhere, on the other hand it sounds even worse than Spawn 1 so i’m not sad

  4. Scott Iskow Says:

I’m a fan of Spawn more from the cartoon than anything else. Wasn’t too crazy about the comics (though they had some good points) and the movie was okay, I guess. What McFarlane’s describing here sounds pretty cool.

  5. elvee Says:

If he’s hell-bent (so to speak) on making a whacked-out Spawn movie where you never hear or completely see the titular character, then I’m there. Never mind that I don’t really have any strong feeling about the character, this sounds crazy in a way the comic movie genre needs.

Gah! The pretention just drips off of the (web)page.

” McFarlane says he’s going to write, produce, self-finance and direct the film.”
-this means he can’t ifnd anyone else to do this for him.

That said, it doesn’t sound like a bad idea, but let’s face it, McFarland’s never shown much skill doing anything else than marketing himself and drawing kewl picture.

“How many years has this movie been in production?”

    Zero.

He’s had the idea for a decade, but he’s never gotten a deal going. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen, thought. The Spider-Man movie was held up by one thing or another for 20 years. Then things started rolling so fast that everyone forgot about all the problems that came before and just enjoyed the movie.

  9. Jake W Says:

Additionally they were planning to use Angela for Spawn 2 but then the Neil Gaiman lawsuit happened.

  10. Zeitgeist Says:

    “Zero”

Ok so he has just been talking about the same idea for many years, i wonder what the hold up is, wouldnt he have more than enough money to finance a relativly low budget movie like this?

Probably because he’d have to change his plans for the story and all that? Cause now that I think of it Cogliostro was in the first film, too.

  12. King Tito Says:

Todd’s the man, nothing says comicbook movie to me more than a D.I.Y., not to many cooks in the kitchen, i’m gonna do it even if you think it’s a stupid idea type of movie.

This man has balls, and is doing what most of the pros wish they could be doing with their properties.

I love seeing people take the bull by the horns.

“McFarlane says he’s going to write, produce, self-finance and direct the film.”

He will also star as Spawn, and play the additional roles of Cogliostro, Maleboogle or whatever his name is, the Violator and Angela. :)

  14. Jeff Harris Says:

    “This man has balls . . .”

    I COULD go there, but I won’t.

  15. Diana Kingston-Gabai Says:

    “I COULD go there, but I won’t.”

    Then I will! :)

    “This man has balls.”

Well, he did. But he sold them.

    Ba-dum-bump! :D

  16. Steve Van Braeckel Says:

    Spawn is hot!!!
The next movie would be very cool if Guillermo del Toro and Tim Burton are helping…
