Five Things a DC Fan Should Do at San Diego

July 22nd, 2007

Full programming schedule starts here, but I have some highlights for DC fans specifically:

1. Get the latest rumors and news from the horse’s mouth. DC has at least promotional panels for dropping hints about the mainstream books for each day of the con. If you’re there on Thursday, you can catch the rumors about the company-wide plot in (DC Countdown…to the End? 12:15-1:15 PM Thur), or news on its team books (DC Group Therapy: Leagues, Legions, Societies, and Teens 6:00-7:00 PM Thur). On Friday, there’s the always popular DC Nation panel (6:00-7:00 PM Fri) for the entire DCU line; the DCU: New Worlds Order (1:30-2:45 PM Sat) and Wildstorm: Storm Front (5:00-6:00 PM) is on Saturday. Finally, on Sunday you can go to the DC: Big Guns (10:30-11:30 PM Sun) panel to find out what’s being planned for the five major franchises, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and the Flash.

2. See your favorite creators. Aside from the news panels, the usual stroll down Artist’s Alley and the scheduled signings at the DC Booth, there’s a few other places you can find your favorite DC-associated creators. DC: Crossing Over (10:30-11:30 AM Thursday) is a conversation with creators who specifically came from other media (Cecil Castellucci, Paul Dini, Christos N. Gage, Greg Rucka, Steve Niles, and Mark Verheiden), and there are media spotlights dedicated to Adam Hughes (4:00-5:00 PM Thursday) and Paul Dini (11:30-12:30 Friday).

3. Superman: Doomsday. A full-length animated feature based on the Death of Superman premiers Thursday night (8:30-10:30 PM, 10:30-11:45 PM). A must-see for any fan of the man of steel.

4. Try one of the imprints. For those of us who are a bit superhero centric, and may be shy about other genres in the medium, something light put out by a familiar company is a bit less intimidating. Check out the news on their mature readers line (Vertigo: Looking Over the Edge 4:30-5:30 PM Friday; Vertigo: Fables Forum 1:00-2:00 PM Sunday), their young adult line (Minx: Evocative and Fearless, 12:00-1:00 PM, Saturday), or their Manga line (CMX: Manga in Demand! 2:00-3:00 PM Sunday).

5. Listen in on the Academic set. DC superheroes are some of the longest running and most recognizable comic book characters in American culture. At least two of the Comics Art Conference Sessions (Comics Arts Conference Session #5: Disguised as Clark Kent: Jews, Comics, and the Creation of the Superhero 10:30-11:30 AM Friday; Comics Arts Conference Session #7: Of Supermen and Kids with Dreams: The Secret Origins of Superman 1:00-2:00 PM Friday) use Superman as a jumping-off point, and you can bet some of the literary panels are going to go into DC characters as examples. Even if you’re not normally into symbolism and analyzing your superheroes, you may find these discussions more interesting than you think.
