Road to San Diego: Potpourri

I’ve got a mix of SDCC-related stuff for you today. But first, the mothership has a press release up about a recently added panel that will feature the original seven Image creators all together in a steel cage one room. That oughtta be interesting.

Ben Roman, artist for I Luv Halloween, notes on his MySpace blog that he’ll be giving away original art and Finch masks at the con:

Hey Kevin, do you want a mask added to your growing SDCC shopping list?

Speaking of shopping lists, I wasn’t planning on getting the Man-Bat figure Mattel’s gonna have, but after seeing this I almost want it just for the packaging.

The NBC affiliate in Dallas talks to Troy Bowen, another of Platinum’s Comic Book Challenge finalists:

What did it take to enter the contest? How much time would you say you’ve spent on your entry?
I had to write a one-page synopsis of my story as well as write a one-page script for an artist to draw to give an overall feel of what the comic will be about. I had written this as a full comic previously with the intention of getting a team together and submitting to a publisher such as Dark Horse or Image Comics so I had done a bunch of research to try and nail everything down. When the contest came along I had to compress the necessary details down to fit on one page per the contest guidelines. The artist took about 2-3 days to pencil, ink and color the page and then it took about an hour to letter the book.

More details on the challenge can be found here.

BOOM! Studios is celebrating their second anniversary with a party:

Thom Zahler sends word that he’ll have Love and Capes glasses at the con, in conjunction with Toom Tumblers:

And unfortunately Leonard Kirk has apparently lost his table in Artists’ Alley:

I feel really bad about this but I think everyone deserves an explanation. The head honchos at Comicon in their infinte wisdom, (please note that my sarcasm generator is operating at 110%) have decided to cut back on Artists Alley space YET AGAIN!

As a result, I lost the table that I have held in Artists Alley for the past decade.

Lest anyone think that I am pulling some kind of prima donna stunt by not attending the con, I need to point out that the money I raise by selling artwork and sketches in Artists Alley PAYS for the fucking trip… and then some! Moreover, living in Canada means that a typical Comicon excursion, depending upon which hotel I stay in and what deals I get, will run me anywhere from $1500.00 to $2000.00 for lodging, plane tickets, food, etc.

I also hate the idea of losing a place where I can coordinate my schedule with signings that I’d normally be doing at the booths for Marvel, Top Cow, Heroes Initiative, etc… People unable to attend those scheduled periods won’t have any other place to find me.

Good lord, Comic-Con is going to break me, and I’m not even going.
