Well, this news should make for heated Internet discussion: Variety reports that Kevin Spacey will return as Lex Luthor in Superman: Man of Steel, Bryan Singer’s sequel to last year’s Superman Returns.
Superman Returns screenwriter Michael Dougherty is writing the script.
July 11th, 2007 at 8:37 am
Superman Returns was an incredible movie, as long as you fast forward through every single Kevin Spacey scene.
July 11th, 2007 at 8:39 am
That sucks. Give Superman someone he can have a decent fight with not baldie redux.
July 11th, 2007 at 9:19 am
Superman Returns was an incredible movie WITH Spacey in it. So I’m happy.
July 11th, 2007 at 9:30 am
Keep in mind of course that Lex Luthor being in the movie does not preclude other villains being in it as well (see: Superman II and Zod & co.)
July 11th, 2007 at 9:31 am
I’m torn on this. I thought Spacey did a good Lex, but I sort-of wish that they could put Lex on the back burner for a movie or two. It’s not as though The Joker is in EVERY Batman movie, after all.
And imagine the great “reveal” scene at the end of the third or fourth movie if up to that point, we haven’t seen Luthor in a while!
July 11th, 2007 at 9:35 am
I like the self-obsessed humanist Lex a lot more than the goofy Land Baron lex.
July 11th, 2007 at 9:42 am
I disagree. Lex seems to occupy a different role in Superman’s life than Joker does for Batman. In the Superman comics, Luther is almost always in the background of most storylines (if he is not the central villain). Joker, on the other hand, can’t appear in a Batman comic without taking center stage. I wouldn’t mind if Luthor occupied this role in the next movie–not the main bad guy, but someone who antagonizes Superman for a scene or two and maybe contributes to the mayhem. However, I agree that Lex can be overused. Here’s hoping that Singer and co. use him sparingly in the next movie.
July 11th, 2007 at 9:43 am
I’m soooo tired of seeing Lex in the Superman movies. I understand that he’s Superman’s arch nemisis, but dang, can he fight someone else for a change? How boring would the Superman, Action Comics, and Superman/Batman books be if Lex was in every issue!
With that said, Spacey was a great Lex…
July 11th, 2007 at 9:45 am
Kevin Spacey was the worst part of the film! And Lex Luthor is the ultimate evil, a C.E.O. that never gets his hands dirty not some campy idiot.
July 11th, 2007 at 9:46 am
I have to agree with Lex burnout. I thought Spacey was brilliant but a little variety would be cool. Supes has great villains – cant we have Brainiac for example? Just imagine – Brainiac comes to Earth to conquer and create a machine run planet, creates Doomsday for spectacular super battle? Superman is feared dead, Brainiac is running roughshod over the planet – who can save us now? Or how about Terra Man (yeah you read that right) as some kind of enviromental terrorist who employs Metallo as his hired goon and creates Bizarro to take out Supes? Or…or…
July 11th, 2007 at 9:53 am
I liked Spacey as Lex, and I do think he needs to be in the movie. However, I don’t think he needs to be, and hope that he’s not, the central villain. I’m hoping for Bizarro!!! Or Mxyztlpk (or however you freakin’ spell it…)
July 11th, 2007 at 9:55 am
Nooooooooo! More Lex Luthor? Geez, give the character a rest. They need to radically up the action quotient for the next movie, and more scenery-chewing from Kevin Spacey doesn’t do that.
What a disappointment.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:00 am
I have a feeling that Luthor will be one of two villains that Superman will have to deal with. And, if they’re going “Wrath of Khan” on this one, hopefully, Lex will be far, FAR more menacing and evil than he was in “Returns.”
July 11th, 2007 at 10:03 am
Nice that Mr. Spacey’s back. Now, if they just had a better script…:D
July 11th, 2007 at 10:03 am
I’m am very upset to hear that Bryan Singer is returning to screw up Superman again. People shouldn’t blame Kevin Spacey for the lousy role Lex Luthor had in Superman Return (here for to referred to as Singerman Repugnant). Kevin Spacey is a fine actor and did portray Lex Luthor well, but there is nothing you can do with with a bad script. Bryan Singer’s tweaking this and that took what would have been an excellent movie into a high budget disappointment. As I am certain he will do again. With the exception of Lois Lane the movie was excellently cast. But once you add the costume change, the kid, Richard White, Superman the wussy crybaby and peeping tom and myriad of other flaws in characterization and continuity not to mention his Lex Luthor Lite or what ever it was you go from Superman Returns to Singerman Repugnant. For you the Lex Luthor flaws stood out but you shouldn’t hold Kevin Spacey responsible for that.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:04 am
As a villian, I would truly hope that they would reconsider. “Lex” has been used to DEATH and if the true purpose is to reviatalize the character (Superman) on the screen…rehashing an over used, not well executed villan as LEX is a setback (and I wouldn’t use Zod either). Superman has has a great list of villans that deserve screentime and to keep wanting to use Lex…well, of course I’m outvoted…but I wouldn’t mind putting in my two cents…
July 11th, 2007 at 10:12 am
Worst Superhero movie ever gets a sequel?? Maybe Singer can direct a heterosexual Superman that throws a punch and doesn’t rehash the plot from a previous Superman film
July 11th, 2007 at 10:17 am
The one good part of Superman Returns is back, eh? Perhaps now they’ll give him a decent script to work with. And perhaps Lex can have a more diabolical scheme than simply trying to establish some beachfront property.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:18 am
I like Spacey. I liked Superman Returns. That said, I’ll wait for the DVD on this one. Why? Because Superman has been around since what, 1949? You’re telling me that in a film franchise that will now have 6 films, your only viable villain for the big screen is Lex Luthor? I’m just tired of it and it speaks volumes abou the utter lack of creativity in Hollywood.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:19 am
I don’t agree that it was a bad movie and I don’t think Spacey was bad. I also don’t think it really needs more action.
What I do hate is the tendency of moviemakers to get stuck on their first villain. Like the Green Goblin in the Spider Man franchise and Austin Powers’s foil.
Move on. Move on. Too many villains is bad. The same villain is bad.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:21 am
This is unwelcome news. Spacey is a great actor, but his Lex was not near the terror he could have been.
This movie needs action….Brainiac, General Zod, Mongul, Silver Banshee, a combination of Toyman/Prankster/Metallo, Ultra-Humanite (going from scientist to woman to ape), even the ’70s style Terra-Man….not Lex…
July 11th, 2007 at 10:27 am
So… Kevin Spacey’s back in the role of Kevin Spacey in the next Superman movie…
Not that big a surprise – at least we can hope for a bigger yarn than the ‘crystal-grown real estate’ from Returns.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:34 am
My votes for Superman villains if the movie were not going to have Lex:
Desaad (with Darkseid only hinted at)
Brainiac
Manchester Black
Ultra-Humanite (though it would be a pretty different sort of movie)
I just have to say that Superman is more interesting up against the smart villains. It’s brain vs. brawn that makes for the best Superman stories. More action is not really the answer, without the real interest of problem solving.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:42 am
Good Lord, Spacey was just AWFUL in a film that was just bad! Leave Luthor out of it and give some of Superman’s other Villians time to shine.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:43 am
I don’t have a problem with Kevin Spacey returning as Lex Luthor. I think he did a fantastic job as Luthor in Superman Returns. My problem is with the fact that in total this is the 6th Superman movie with Lex Luthor in it.
Hopefully they will choose another villain for the movie, maybe somebody who will force Superman and Luthor to team-up. Otherwise, I am afraid Man of Steel will be just like Superman Returns. Beautiful to look at but virtually void of anything new.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:45 am
Not the worst superhero movie ever, but certainly not a good one. I lauded Singer being selected to direct and was incredibly disappointed in the result. A tip of the hat to the Donner movie would have been great, but the slavish reverence only highlighted just how superior Donner’s movie was and just how bereft of ideas Singer’s was, even with an enormous budget. With Singer at the helm again I have nothing but low expectations for this sequel, to the point that I would not be unhappy if it ends being scuttled. In fact, I’m hoping for just that.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:48 am
Wait…..Kevin Spacey was the worst part of Superman Returns???? Did eveyone fall asleep in the first 25 minutes of the movie?? How about a gay Superman for 1, or maybe the worst part was when Sups still had all his powers WITH A FREAK’N HUGE SHARD OF KRYPTONITE STABBED INTO HIS KIDNEYS…did that bother anyone???
Guess not, lets all wine that poor Kevin Spacey is giong to be in the movie, boo hoo.
O, and can anyone point out where in the article it says that Lex will be the Main Villian????? Anyone….
July 11th, 2007 at 10:56 am
Feh. Too much Lex. Brainiac by himself for “Man of Steel.” They had the perfect setup in “Returns” when the crystals and the Kryptonite go sailing off into space. They return as Brainiac!
Lex should make a return in a later film with Metallo as a henchman.
Oh well. Too late now.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:57 am
Even ignoring what people may have thought of the 2006 film, let’s note that Luthor is ALWAYS the bad guy. Four of five films, Smallville, the animated series, and comics. The only places he’s not are the 50s TV show and the bulk of Lois and Clark.
It’s time that we saw someone else from that collection of Superman enemies get a chance. One of them must be interesting enough, right?
July 11th, 2007 at 10:58 am
I hope that the new movie or proyect be more actual and according to the storyline about superman in the, and no copies of the last movies in the 80′s
Lex luthor is a great caracter, and i like to see more foes, bizarro, metallo, parasito, lobo, brainiac… i dont know, are so many and and with a great script, the next proyect may be the best of the Superman movies! Good luck!!!
July 11th, 2007 at 11:03 am
I really could care less about the Superman sequel. What rankles me is that I JUST READ NOT MORE THAN A WEEK AGO that Kevin Spacey is retiring from acting. What does he think playing the part of the fictious Lex Luthor is. What a jackass….
July 11th, 2007 at 11:09 am
Um, how come everybody thinks Luthor’s going to be the only villain in this thing? I bet you ten bucks he isn’t.
July 11th, 2007 at 11:13 am
I thought Spacey retired from acting??
July 11th, 2007 at 11:14 am
the only person they really NEED to bring back is parker posey
she had the best moment in the film
July 11th, 2007 at 11:17 am
As a lifelong Superman fan I want to say that the only Superman movie I can stand to watch is the one with Richard Pryor.
Superman, as a character, is a hero … yet the character they have chosen to show in the movies has yet to show a true aspect of heroism.
He has sex with Lois Lane, a woman he’s supposed to love, then because he gets his powers back, decides that his secret identity is more important than Lois, and erases her memory.
Then we continue into the latest chapter where we learn that after wiping her memory, he dropped her off at home and heads out into space for 5 years.
When he returns he finds that Lois has a 5 year old child and doesn’t know who the father is. How big of a moron would he have to be not to make the immediate connection?
So, he knows he’s the father but does he appologize? Does he try to explain to Lois what happened? Does he try to make things right or at least offer to take some responsibility? NO!
In the real world, he would probably be charged with date rape, and at the very least be labelled as a deadbeat dad.
They had the opportunity to make a truly heroic movie and to make a new generation gain a little respect for a character who truly deserves it, they failed miserably.
July 11th, 2007 at 11:18 am
you wouldn’t retire from acting either if you made the 8 figure deal Spacey just made for this sequal
July 11th, 2007 at 11:18 am
Yeah, Spacey did retire – to run a theatre he just started up, I believe. So count me as one who IS kinda surprised.
But happy.
July 11th, 2007 at 11:29 am
That’s funny. The Old Vic where Spacey is the artistic director is almost 200 years old. Not “a theatre he just started up”.
Please don’t take offense to the correction just wanted to put that info out there.
July 11th, 2007 at 11:32 am
Wish I could say this was exciting news! Too bad they made Luthor out to be a baffoon. Spacey was alright but did he do any more than channel Hackman? I’d rather see Clancy Brown shave his head and take over the role….least he knows the character.
July 11th, 2007 at 11:33 am
Maybe in the Superman sequel we’ll finally see Spacey play an overacting campy villain, Superman as a home-wrecker, Lois as a cheating scumbag and Perry white’s son as pussy-whipped. Oh no, wait…that was the first movie.
July 11th, 2007 at 11:35 am
Maybe with any luck, Lex will kill Superman’s son, go to jail just in time for Brainiac to come around less than halfway thru the movie.
July 11th, 2007 at 11:54 am
I think that it would be okay if Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) did return as a SUPPORTING CHARACTER in the franchise. There is nothing wrong with a little character continuity in the franchise.
I think that in order to keep the interest in the franchise FRESH, they need to diversify the plotlines a bit and make the movie a little less character-centric.
Nobody wants to see the same damn movie over and over and over again.
Give us BRAINIAC!
Give us DOOMSDAY!
Give us DARKSEID!
Give us METALLO!
Give us PARASITE!
Give us ZOD!
Give us BIZARRO!
Give us something that we’ve never seen done in comic book movies before!
If you keep on giving us the same old crap, then it will reflect in poor ticket sales.
Nuff said.
Now go make a good movie.
July 11th, 2007 at 11:54 am
Well, I hated Superman Redux. Bad script, lousy casting (esp. Lois), the kid, plot holes you could drive a truck through, little to no action. NOW you’re telling that (yet again) Luthor’s back. I guess it makes sense to get him off that stupid little island he ended up on, but COME ON… Why do we need to see him in practically every Superman flick?
I was planning to sit out this undeserved sequel anyhow, waiting to rent the DVD only if the reviews/fan opinion was decent, so it really doesn’t matter much to me anyhow. But it’s looking less likely I’ll even want to bother with renting it.
Too bad really… A truly EPIC Superman movie, something on a galactic scale with truly imposing villains, would be a lot of fun. God forbid we get a Superman for the 21st century! Why WB decided, instead, to do pointless rehash of the quaint, outdated 1978 Donner film is a mystery.
July 11th, 2007 at 12:08 pm
i thought this movie was pretty terrible..and it mostly has to do with the horrible story.. superman didn’t do anything new really (accept father a kid and not know {bs, he’s Superman!}), he didn’t really fight anyone, and the kid thing is just a bad plot device that didn’t really serve any purpose. spacey actually was cool as luther but the story was just so bad. superman better punch something in this one…
p.s. BRING IN BRAINIAC!!!!
July 11th, 2007 at 12:34 pm
I can only pray this means much, MUCH more parker posey as Kitty. Really, nothing says “Superman” more than Kevin and Parker vamping it up. Perhaps a musical number?
July 11th, 2007 at 12:44 pm
3/4 of the world’s population must think Superman spends his entire life battling his ONLY foe, Lex Luthor…
July 11th, 2007 at 12:53 pm
I thought that Superman Returns was a pretty boring movie and kind of silly with “Super Baby”. I do recognize that in some ways it was Brian Singer’s love letter to the original Superman movie but what dissapoints me about the upcoming Man of Steel is that from what I understand it is going to be “Superman II redux” with the return of Zod (I think Jude Law is supposed to play him). We have seen all this before. So many great villains and possibilities and the Superman movies just rehash and rehash.
July 11th, 2007 at 12:55 pm
I would like to see another director, perhaps even Michael Bay, try their hand at Superman. The Transformers film was amazing, and over-the-top. Digital Domain does some of the most realistic and spectacular special effects. Perfect combination, if you ask me.
And Lex Luther is over-used. I agree the character should get a long rest. Luthor appeared in every Chris Reeve film as well. Let’s move on already to something like the Parasite, or Metallo, or even Doomsday. (It’s unfortunate that Superman really doesn’t have much in the way of interesting adversaries. At least at his power level.)
July 11th, 2007 at 1:08 pm
Yeah we need some new damn villians! I’m sick of Lex Luthor.
July 11th, 2007 at 1:19 pm
Transformers while fun had so many racial stereotypes I felt like I was watching ‘Birth of a Nation’. No Michael Bay please.
July 11th, 2007 at 1:42 pm
Alright!! I can’t wait to see Spacey’s Luthor get his comeuppance after his heinous actions in Superman Returns. While I loved the movie and its subtext (Superman as a lonely alien? Love it!) I was let down by the lack of a climax. Still, it was far better than the comics have been in the past decade….
Or it could just be that I’m not a kid anymore and so the adventures of an infallible alien aren’t particularly interesting to me. Either way, Superman Returns was a great shot in the arm for the age old mythology. “You will see your life through my eyes, and I through yours.” Great stuff.
July 11th, 2007 at 1:53 pm
Superman Returns was so bad that it made me retroactively hate the Christopher Reeve Superman films, which I used to enjoy, but none of it was Kevin Spacey’s fault. Heck, I don’t even know that I can blame Brandon Routh or Kate Bosworth, even though their acting was so lifeless and ANTI-human that they made the acting of Hayden Christiansen and Natalie Portman in the Star Wars prequels look GOOD by comparison. Bottom line, Bryan Singer ruined his own film, and the irony is that he did by loving the source material too much. Superman Returns actually would have been BETTER if it had been made by someone who was LESS familiar with, or respectful towards, the character to begin with, and I don’t often say that about superhero films.
July 11th, 2007 at 1:54 pm
The problem with the Luthor portrayal in the movies is that he is shown as just a criminal (ambitous, sure, but nothing more than that). Only out for money.
Luthor’s greatest quality is that he see’s himself as mankinds savior. In his mind, all of his plans are for the betterment of society. So you can kind of relate to that aspect of his character. Being able to see the villans point of view makes for a much better antagonist.
As CEO of Lexcorp, he would have a public facade of philathrapist and do-gooder (while still scheeming against Superman in his mean time). He would have access to cutting edge technology (ie: military projects, cloning, Metallo, etc). He could even get to play the mad scientist role as seen back in the silver age!
Singer lost the opportunity to give this character a little more room for growth or story potential by pigeonholing him into the money-grubbing Luthor again. Another real estate scheme? C’mon! That wasn’t that great of a plan back in 1978.
As Superman’s greatest foe, the character deserves better treatment than just as a swindler of old maids and crooked real estate agent.
July 11th, 2007 at 2:17 pm
So there’s a tendency in Synger’s superhero movies. Lex is for the Superman movies what Magneto was for the X-Men.
I hope Lex being part of the movie means he’ll have to appear because he’s part of the movie’s continuity but he won’t be the main villain.
July 11th, 2007 at 2:47 pm
It’s like Time Warner can’t burn their money quick enough.
They just don’t have a clue do they?
July 11th, 2007 at 3:01 pm
ugh, didn’t like Superman Returns at all…
but really the only one I ever like was Superman II “Come sone of Jar’el (sp?), kneel before ZOD!!… snoochie bootchies”
July 11th, 2007 at 3:08 pm
This is great news as far as I’m concerned, though I do hope they go a bit deeper with the character this time around. I really enjoyed Superman Returns, but I have faith that Man of Steel will blow it out of the water – much like the case with Singer’s X-Men movies.
July 11th, 2007 at 3:15 pm
Singer & Dougherty are the wrong pick for this franchise. They have a dark/weird tone that’s out of context. X-Men? Yeah. Batman? Yep. Superman? No.
Spacey’s only back because he’s tight with the velvet mafia in charge of this pict.
July 11th, 2007 at 3:29 pm
I hope he decides to play Luthor this time, and not Gene Hackman.
Also, I want Brainiac.
July 11th, 2007 at 3:37 pm
Not Luthor Again. Superman has a rogues gallery too just like Batman. Use different villains and not use Luthor for awhile.
July 11th, 2007 at 3:45 pm
Yea! Another uninspired Spacey performance! I’ll probably fall asleep watching this one too…
July 11th, 2007 at 3:54 pm
Kevin Spacey was the greatest part of the movie compared to the wooden acting of Brandon Routh.
I hope this next movie has more action, because I did see a lot of people yawning in the theaters.
Superman needs to be more of a proactive character rather than reactive. In the movie, he doesn’t really do anything except wait for bad things to happen.
And please I hope they use villains that people really want to see, like Bizarro and Doomsday.
July 11th, 2007 at 4:08 pm
I’m afraid I’m going to have to pass on this.
July 11th, 2007 at 4:23 pm
The first movie was such a disappointment. Parker Posey was totally under utilized and could have easily taken the role of the main super villain. I wasn’t feeling it from Spacey, but I think I blame that more on the writing than his acting ability. The script was aweful and held up nothing to the mythos.
The comic book has been around almost a centruy, and it’s basic story has remained the same and holds up. So why take it in a new direction with Lois having a kid and married to someone else. That movie might have been about a super hero, but it wasn’t about Superman.
July 11th, 2007 at 4:25 pm
When Superman was licensed for development into movies this time around, which villians were included in that package? It could be that the producers can only use a limited amount of characters in this movie. If this is so, then they need to renegotiate this deal.
More people got pissed at Lucas for changing Star Wars IV, V and VI some 20 years after the fact, and Singer looks like he’s doing the same to the Superman franchise.
Can’t Hollywood understand that they need something new here? How can Smallville survive for years on TV yet the 21st century movie languishes in mediocre plot and bad characterization?
I want to see Superman. Not weak superman, not Jor El flash-back Superman, not I don’t know how to be a human Superman.
I want Superman. I guess I’ll watch the Machine Playtoy Neo vs. Multiple-Man Agent Smith fight for my fix.
July 11th, 2007 at 5:02 pm
As a comic fan, I feel really dissapointed and sad about Superman Returns …
Superman is about action and sci-fi (his first appareance was in a comic book titled “Action Comics”) He can’t be portrayed as an outcast or as shy boy ,,,, Instead, he must be portrayed as a leader for humankind.
Please recast Superman (in the same way Universal is doing with Hulk) …
Warner Bros did the same mistake Universal did with The Hulk: a movie about super-heroes could be anything but boring ….
July 11th, 2007 at 5:02 pm
YAY! Kevin Spacey gets to work for 6 weeks and collect a fat check!
July 11th, 2007 at 5:39 pm
Sorry but Superman Returns was an horrible train wreck of crappyness and i love superman and Brian Singer. I’d Rather Watch “Batman And Robin” on a loop. This news Bites the dogs balls.
July 11th, 2007 at 6:35 pm
Superman Returns was the most boring comic book adaptation ever made. I would rather watch Batman & Robin as well–at least that was entertaining.
The only people involved with the project with any iota of talent were Kevin Spacey and Parker Posey.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:47 pm
Atheism is not a religion. It’s a simple lack of belief in a deity. Lack of belief doesn’t equal belief.
Unless one counts -not- collecting stamps as a hobby…
July 11th, 2007 at 11:10 pm
While I liked Superman Returns,I can see how todays audiences just aren’t as hyped about this project. Singer did the first 2 X films. But went too retro with S.R. I’m hoping he won’t do the same thing, but this doesn’t look promising. And I didn’t like the kid either.
July 11th, 2007 at 11:26 pm
Why would you hire the same guy who wrote Superman Returns to write the sequel? Did the producers learn nothing?
July 12th, 2007 at 4:54 am
I hated all of Superman Returns, the story was so boring, the acting was all Drama queen-ish, not believable, and the director had no direction.
I want a SUPER-MAN to live up to that title let him fight Lobo or Bizarro, and get rid of that cape or make it longer and wider.
I’ll be back to see a Superman movie when that happens, Or get Todd Mcfarlane to direct and write, with Alex Ross on the visuals/costumes!
July 12th, 2007 at 10:32 am
I absolutely loved Superman Returns, however, I can appreciate many peoples gripes. I would urge people to give this a chance though. For me SR was an emotional rollercoaster, if not an action-fest. But now that’s done I believe Singer will deliver big bang and by 2009 I’m gonna by there on the first night.
July 12th, 2007 at 5:41 pm
oooooouuuuuu…..THE PARASITE….now that would be awesome. parasite and metallo…thats gotta have some punching in it….
July 12th, 2007 at 5:45 pm
For me SR was an emotional rollercoaster, if not an action-fest.
I keep hearing this, but it’s simply NOT TRUE. I could understand if the action was replaced with remotely meaningful dialogue, but it wasn’t. I could understand if it was replaced with emotion-rich acting performances, but it wasn’t. The script and story had less depth than the paper they were printed on, to the point that the only parts that even came close to engaging my brain were “Guess which lines from the original film Singer ripped off!” and “Try to figure out how to reconcile all the plot holes!” As for the acting, Routh and Bosworth looked like department store mannequins, only less expressive. If what Singer though what they showed onscreen was a convincing portrayal of “love,” then he has never experience a human emotion in his life.
July 14th, 2007 at 12:20 am
I understand that it was a ‘sort of’ sequel to Superman II. But the fact is that the Superman of the last 25 years isn’t that Superman. While those movies were great, the problem is that isn’t what Superman or his supporting cast is any more. Incuding Lex Luthor. Keven Spacey played Gene Hackman. Not Lex Luthor. Luthor could be in every Superman movie until the end of time as far as I’m concerned. Just make the character what he is. Powerful. Dangerous. Frightening. Not comic relief.
July 14th, 2007 at 2:13 pm
Oh god.Help us.Lex again and Superbaby.I gnash my teeth in dread.Singer could have done something so good with DC’s flag ship icon .But no,what does he do,spend millions to rehash Superman 2 and make the mythos into a flick-chick soap opera. And even then it failed to impress.People only went because it WAS Superman and alot of us were so disappointed……..from all age groups.Warner Bros, wisen up.Marvel is kicking your asses and they do not even have such a rich history of characters.
July 15th, 2007 at 2:50 pm
I’m not crazy about it. :p
July 16th, 2007 at 10:55 am
wow…superman returns was terrible…maybe this sequel can revive the series.
July 16th, 2007 at 10:55 am
wow…superman returns was terrible…maybe this sequel can revive the series.

They should have just waited until the characters in smallville were done and then made a movie with them. Tom Welling from the T.V series would have played the part better then Brandon Routh did. Not to mention that Lex from Smallville is more cruel, ruthless and menacing. Kevin Spacey is a good actor but not suited for the Lex role. Plus making Superman be the father of Lois Lanes kid was just bullshit this movie was suppose to jump start the series again. They screwed it all up, well actually Bryan Singer screwed it up which doesn’t surprise me. They need someone who is true to the characters like Christopher Nolan was with Batman Begins. Sure maybe not the best comic book movie but was a lot better then Superman Returns.
