After my confusion over last week’s release date — no more holidays on a Wednesday, please — this New Comics Day seems relatively … relaxed.

That’s not to say there aren’t any “big” releases; things just seem slower. On the heels of the well-received Sinestro Corps Special comes Green Lantern #21 — the “first chapter” of “Sinestro Corps” (so I don’t know what that makes last month’s special). And after the big revelation of New Avengers #31, the team has to start coming to terms with the new green-skinned threat. No, not The Hulk. Another green-skinned threat.

Elsewhere, Oni Press releases the long-promised Stephen Colbert’s Tek Jansen #1, Frank Miller and Dave Gibbons return with Martha Washington Dies, and Nicolas Cage & Son plunge into the world of comics with Voodoo Child #1.

MAY070013 MARTHA WASHINGTON DIES (ONE SHOT) $3.50

Chris: Give Me Liberty is probably one of my least-favorite Frank Miller books, but I’m sure the more devoted FM reader will want to snatch this one-shot up.

Kevin: I love Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso’s dark and complex crime series, but I follow the byzantine storyline in trades, where I think it unfolds best. That said, every time I read a solicitation for an individual issue — here, a couple of Minutemen go to Lake Tahoe to kick back — I have to fight the urge to seek it out.

Kevin: So far, I’ve been pretty pleased with the books in DC’s Minx line — I think Re-Gifters is better than The PLAIN Janes, but I enjoyed them both — and I don’t expect Andi Watson and Josh Howard’s Clubbing to disappoint. In fact, I’ve been looking forward to this one since it was announced last year.

MAY070165 GREEN ARROW YEAR ONE #1 (OF 6) $2.99

Kevin: For a character whose solo series just ended, Green Arrow sure is getting a lot of play. He plays a prominent role in the current Black Canary miniseries, and will co-star in three specials centering on his marriage to the JLA chairwoman (all leading up to the new Green Arrow and Black Canary series). So, do we need Green Arrow: Year One? I have no idea, but as long as it reunites The Losers creative team of Andy Diggle and Jock, I’m happy enough to buy it.

MAY072161 DEADPOOL GLI SUMMER FUN SPECTACULAR $3.99

Kevin: Although I’ve never read a Deadpool comic, and I passed on Dan Slott’s Great Lakes Avengers miniseries, I’m intrigued by this 48-page one-shot on the strength of these two pages, posted last month by artist Clio Chiang on her blog. It’s Deadpool and Flatman engaged in an origami battle. Origami!

Chris: I don’t know what’s been encouraging this plethora of top-notch Kirby reprint material (other than perhaps a recognition that he, you know, deserves it), but bring it on I say. This hardcover volume collects all nine issues of The King’s tales involving a young caveboy and his happy-go-lucky dinosaur friend. I will most likely be buying this at some point.

Kevin: Sigh. This makes me sad. I know this series will relaunch sometime later with Terry Moore as writer, but I so loved this incarnation of Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane by Sean McKeever and Takeshi Miyazawa and, later, David Hahn. It was charming, fun, quirky and … addictive. (Yes, I admit to a weakness for teen dramas like Degrassi and My So-Called Life. I even watched Hidden Palms, for as long as it lasted. What of it?) So, I’ll dub this my bittersweet pick of the week.

Chris: I’m not sure, but I’m assuming this is the third issue of PictureBox’s relatively new comics magazine/newsletter. It’s a pretty good one, too, containing an interview with Guy Davis, part two of an essay on Steve Gerber, Jog on Mutt and Jeff, a scathing critique of the Masters of American Comics exhibit, and lots of crack reviews.

But there’s just been too much stuff coming out lately for me to keep making such frequent purchases. It’s a highly entertaining series, though, particularily if you enjoy Fugitive-styled crime stories.

Kevin: Delightfully titled “I, Librarian,” this is the first collection of James Turner’s series about the tough-as-nails head librarian of the Middleton Public Library who battles overdue books and the forces of darkness. Buy this book.

Chris: You know, you take a big chance when you make that the name of your comic.

Chris: Pick of the week. Joe Matt once again allows readers to cast a withering eye on those aspects of our lives that, rightly, occur only when all the shades have been drawn and we’ve double-checked that the door to our room is locked. This book collects the most recent issues of Matt’s ongoing series Peepshow, which chronicled Matt’s increasingly obsessive-compulsive addiction to hardcore pornography. And yes, that means reading lots of panels of Matt whacking off, though you also get to see him have lunch with Chester Brown and Seth, and I don’t think he’s ever drawn that before!

All kidding aside, Matt provides a narrow, almost suffocating, look at a man slowly spiraling downward, and his work is engaging enough that you can’t look away, in that nine-car-fatality way that can make for great art.
