With the Fourth of July holiday falling on Wednesday, I’m not really sure how New Comics Day will pan out.

Diamond cautions that “shipments may be delayed,” and suggests you “consult your retailer,” which I guess means everything will depend upon whether your comics shop is open tomorrow. So, you’re at the mercy of your retailer’s family barbecue schedule.

Chris: Pick of the week. All-Star Superman isn’t the only superhero comic I read on a regular basis. But it is the one I look forward to the most.

Kevin: All that cover is lacking is someone twirling his moustache.

APR070178 AMAZING TRANSFORMATIONS OF JIMMY OLSEN TP $14.99

Chris: It’s about time someone collected all these goofball stories into one volume. Jimmy becomes a werewolf! Jimmy becomes a porcupine! Jimmy remains a complete schlemiel! Man, I can’t get enough of this stuff.

Kevin: With this, DC sews up the transformation-fetish market!

MAR070177 BATMAN EGO AND OTHER TALES HC $24.99

Kevin: This 200-page hardcover collects Darwyn Cooke’s Batman: Ego, Catwoman: Selina’s Big Score, and stories from Batman: Gotham Knights #23 and #33, and Solo #1 and #5. I didn’t care for Ego — the art, of course, was beautiful but the story left me cold — but I love Selina’s Big Score and Cooke’s Solo work.

MAY070167 BLACK CANARY #1 (OF 4) $2.99

Kevin: On one hand, it’s great that Black Canary is finally getting the spotlight outside of Birds of Prey — she’s even become chairwoman of the Justice League — but on the other hand, much of the attention feels designed simply to bolster her looming marriage to Green Arrow. The Emerald Archer even appears on three of the four covers for this miniseries.

Kevin: Although I enjoy Mike Carey’s writing, and I’m intrigued by the miniseries’ concept — after a wild party, no one in a tight-knit clique can remember ever seeing one of their group before — I admit that the big draw for me is Jock’s art. Between Faker and Green Arrow: Year One, I’ll be a very happy Jock fan this summer.

I’m so happy, in fact, that I’ll dub Faker #1 my pick of the week.

Chris: David Lapham’s first big post-Stray Bullets graphic novel. I don’t know too much about it other than it’s a crime noir in a similar vein to Bullets, so fans of that series should probably check this out.

Chris: This trade collects all of Jim Valentino’s stories about an average guy trapped on a planet full of superheroes. Hey, back in 1984 that was considered cutting-edge satire.

Fun stuff, but I’m a little afraid to find out how they’ve aged.

Kevin: I wasn’t aware of this new global manga from Seven Seas Entertainment set in the world of free running until I stumbled across artist Jennyson Rosero’s DeviantArt page the other day. I really like Rosero’s art, and the preview pages on the Seven Seas website look fantastic.

Chris: I wonder if fans of old-school cheesecake like this collection of torpedo-breasted Ward vixens look at stuff like the Mary Jane sculpture and scoff.

Chris: Keep it in your pants, pervs. My understanding is this Seven Seas manga is actually about a pair of maids who have to put up with a skeezy 14-year-old and not a BDSM relationship. The focus is on comedy here, though I’m sure there will be plenty of fan service to titillate the needy.

Kevin: Yet another Seven Seas title, this one is by Madeleine Rosca, who was a runner-up for the International Manga Award — the so-called “Nobel Prize of Manga.”
