"Is it a solicitation? The link at the beginning of this blog says it’s a piece from Diamond Previews, in their Splash Page section."

Well, I could be wrong here.

However, I thought that the Splash Page bit was just Diamond's featured items from that month's Previews. Essentially, they highlight potential items of interest, using the solicitation copy from the catalog.

If that's the case, then yes, Marvel wrote the piece; Diamond just published it in Previews and did a ctrl-C + ctrl-V into the Splash Page.

Again, I could be wrong.

"Marvel didn’t write the bit about Spider-Man, Diamond did."

I was under the impression that the companies wrote their own solicitation copy...

"And yet DC is the one slaughtering their characters left and right."

And Marvel isn't?

Captain America
Giant-Man [Bill Foster]
Captain Marvel [Genis-Vell]
Quasar
Super Skrull (at least he was dead in the 2nd Annihilation HC)

particularly interesting is the mention of gwen stacy. It should say "who gets thrown under the bus at the expense of gwen stacy."

I'm with CodeGuy. Especially sense if anybody DOESN'T care about the actual characters, it's diamond. Maybe after this they'll stop with the doom and gloom Spidey though...

The most alarming thing about that Spider-Man press release, to my mind, is the open acceptance that this is a story which people will buy because it's an EVENT, not because they have the slightest emotional investment in the characters. If anything, it practically belittles the concept that anyone might in fact care.

But if you're in the business of telling stories - no matter how cynical or commercially-driven they may be - surely you WANT the audience to care. I can't imagine why you'd want to signal so blatantly that you don't care, and the readers shouldn't care either. It's arguably the single worst press release I've read, judged in that light.
